As someone who feels strongly in support of absolute artistic freedom, I've seen threads on here about certain artists I like who are considered lolcows for the content of the art they draw, instead of how they, the individual, are personality or character wise, which I disagree with.

So I figured this could make for an interesting thread topic, do any of you Kiwis support artistic freedom? If not, why? To what degree do you support it? Any other ideas or philosophies about it you'd like to share?

Who are these artists in particular you are referring to? How do you define artistic freedom? And, you may answer if you feel like it, but do you have artistic training?

It should be illegal to draw things i don’t like. And if i’m ever in charge it will be.

We make fun of artcows because they're shit at art and shitty people as well.

Do you have any examples? All of the ones I can think of off the top of my head are lolcows primarily because of their personalities and behaviour.

As for what I define as artistic freedom, I categorize what's normally defended under artistic freedom: cartoons that express a political idea (as long as it is not extreme) or satirize a certain individual or group of individuals, and even regular, more traditional art such as paintings, sculptures, & cartoons. However, I also extend this to what most would call degenerate artworks, like rule 34 or any other weird shit people on the depths of the internet create. Now while it is fun to laugh at this stuff for how bizarre, weird, or stupid it is, and even I do it myself, I still think it should be defended as free speech. Just in general, I think any type of artwork should count as free speech.

Also, I have no real artistic training, but I do occasionally doodle to myself, and I sometimes look at guides online.

lol calm down

I'm not mad at all

I am of the opinion that all art should be legal but it's also not the hill I'm going to die on, if someone goes to jail for their little girl anime porn I'm not exactly going to cry over it.

"Artistic freedom" doesn't entail that art be above criticism or ridicule.

If your art is just god awful, I will excercise my free speech by laughing at it and calling the artist a drooling moron. As is my right.
