Does society focus too much on media having meaning it doesn't have?

This shit pisses me off so much. People can't seem to find enjoyment in media without trying to find some sort of philosophical meaning and thinking way too hard about it having some sort of meaning it doesn't have most of the time. It makes it hard to enjoy media without someone trying to convince me that some dumb TV show is actually a social commentary about racism or something, when in reality it's just dumb schlock that's funny. Why the hell do people have to do this and act like there's some sort of hidden meaning in media, when there wasn't really any to begin with?

If you carefully read that message it's obvious that there are elements of non-confontrationalism as advocated in the writings of Neo-Yogi Kumarr.

Look at the emphasis about how Tv shows are "Dumb" and the neo-classical elements of "dumb schlock" or "acting like there is a hidden meaning", as if it isn't real.

This is what happens when you take your schizo meds. You become hollowed out and only see the superficial. Stop taking your schizo meds, kids.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, write thinkpieces about the REAL meaning of things.

Postmodernism is so dull.

Agreed dude. I just want to laugh at some offensive humor and not read about how it's like commentary on the importance of Black Lives Matter or some shit.

You have been spending too much time on Twitter.

Or being on Kiwi and reading about lolcows who do this shit a lot.

It's because they ignore these words of wisdom:
Just repeat to yourself "It's just a show, I should really just relax..."

It's true, people read waaaay too much into movies and games nowadays. Sometimes there's some alternate meaning about how the downtrodden of society are forced to face the troubles of life head on but most of the time a bukkake is just a bukkake.

I generally assume that the people making art are just as retarded as I am. With that in mind, some things are allegorical or have a deeper meaning or clever themes and what have you, but not everything does. Most stories are simple on their face, beginning, middle, end, protagonist, antagonist, not much changes in terms of formula. But you can do a lot with that formula, and that’s where complexity comes in.
And I love complexity, when it’s not forced in. If it feels natural, then I’m all for it. But not everything needs to be complex, and sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. However, I firmly believe that artist can unintentionally include deeper meanings that they just didn’t think of until it was finished.

I really enjoyed the fight club analysis that the entire movie is a metaphor for overcoming toxic masculinity and late capitalism and finally do away with gender and have a communist revolution.

That take on Fight Club is so incredibly, horribly wrong I think it's correct.
Are you making it up or do you have an actual source? I would love to see someone try and make that connection.

Unfortunately it looks like the video got removed off youtube. It had like half a million hits (in only a couple of days too). The creator was going crazy deleting all comments that disagreed. I think he finally just pulled it himself.

edit: yep, I even had it in a playlist, but it's gone now.

At some point in the past 5-10 years, the whole concept of "nobody's interpretation of media and fiction is inherently better or more moral than everybody else's, no matter how batshit crazy, stupid, or nasty they may be" was very consciously forgotten and replaced by "this interpretation is the only correct one, and any who disagree are intellectually and morally flawed and need to be condemned" which was usually backed by various media people looking to cast themselves as exclusive arbiters of truth and morality who must be consulted and paid to impart their wisdom.

This is why the laissez faire viewpoint on sex, violence, obscenity, profanity and taboo breaking in media and internet 10 years ago has been largely replaced with strict puritanical rules of just what is and what is not allowed in fiction, since the correct and approved interpretation is now that all of these things cause real world harm to every imaginable minority demographic, and just who needs to be paid to for sensitivity/inclusivity proofreading to ensure correct politics as not doing so also causes real world harm to every imaginable minority demographic

Well I'd say every piece of media usually has a deeper meaning than just what you see on the screen, page, or whatever.

On the other hand some media is very shallow (which isnt a bad a thing btw) and I agree people care way to much about the presence of a underlying message.

I think alot of media does have meaning and messages you can take away. I think when it starts becoming obnoxious is when you begin to insist that shit like Black Panther CHANGED THE WORLD AND SAVED THOUSANDS OF GHETTO BLACK CHILDREN WITHOUT FATHERS FROM A LIFE OF CRIME GUYS IT'S SO IMPORTANT WAKANDA FOREVER
