Poverty is no longer as severe as it was back then and despite the high rates of suicide and drug addiction, people are still a lot more happy now than they were back then. The rates of suicide and drug addiction were lower due to the majority of drugs being a lot harder to access before the rise of the Industrial Revolution and suicide was less common because people were afraid that if they did commit suicide, they'd be automatically damned to Hell no matter what. If the same conditions of the "good old days" existed but Christianity didn't condemn suicide as an unpardonable sin, then I'd suspect the rates of suicide would be a lot higher.

Plus there's the entire issue where we have a lot better documentation of these things now than we did in previous centuries.

In all seriousness, I believe that most people, when pressed, will say that they support the concept of freedom of speech, but that they all have limits on what they believe constitutes acceptable freedom of speech depending on how averse they are to bigotry and degeneracy. Even if one isn't averse to those two things and considers both hate speech and pornography to be covered under the umbrella of free speech, they more often than not will still draw the line at speech which is unquestionably and directly harmful to others (i.e., laws against child porn that protect children from exploitation). In other words, very few people are actual free speech absolutists, even if they say that they are.

To more specifically answer the question posed by the thread, what we know as "the right" is composed of various different sub-ideologies that fall into either the libertarian right or authoritarian right quadrants of the political compass. Neither have particularly strong aversions to bigotry and believe that hate speech is a legitimate form of free speech, but only the libertarian quadrant believes that pornography deserves such a distinction. As such, how pro-free speech any given right-winger is depends on how libertarian or authoritarian they are, with the former being more strongly so than the latter.
