DOOM

The lives system is interesting; it allows you to respawn instantly without having to load the previous checkpoint. Lose them all and it's back to the checkpoint.
Oh interesting, where was this elaborated on? I only watched the E3 trailer and gameplay and I don’t think they went into any details about the mechanics.

Based on your description it sorta sounds like Bioshock medkits, except instead of activating them manually when you’re low on health they activate automatically when you “die”, replenishing your healthbar until you run out of lives.

I found it here.

It's described in the slideshow rather than the article itself, which is annoying but it's there.
A new "extra life" system brings you back to life mid-mission if you lose all your health. I liked it as a way to speed gameplay up in my first playthrough, while I imagine turning it off once I've gotten the hang of the game

The description implies that the life-system is optional so if you don't like it you don't have to use it.

The life system sounds a lot like gold orbs in DMC where you have the choice between either using one to revive on the spot or just letting yourself reset back to the level’s start (or back to a checkpoint in Doom’s case)

Honestly I'd probably go for using the lives depending on how long the load times in this game will be. As much as I love Doom 2016, I hated its load times, especially after you die since it's such a pace breaker. And given this generation's propensity for longer load times, I don't think Eternal will be any different in that regard.

I was looking at the store page on xbox and found there are going to be story expansions at some point. They are described as "Featuring new perspectives and new ways to play, these standalone stories explore the cataclysmic events that led to earth's fall against the demons."

Sounds like you won't be playing as the Doom Slayer in these. I wouldn't mind a little bit of the hilarity of playing as a UAC soldier as shit hits the fan and corporate executives make it worse.

Earlier I speculated about the "They are no longer your people to save" line. I just replayed Doom 2016 and there was a scene where Olivia tells the Slayer, "You couldn't have saved them anyway."

I think this adds to the idea that the Slayer isn't just motivated by demon murder. Olivia was clearly taunting him for his inability to save the base from being destroyed by demons.

I could be overthinking it and letting my hype get the better of me, but given that it's one of the only scenes where a character besides Hayden speaks to him, I think there is significance there that could influence the direction of the Slayer's character in Eternal.

Do you think ID/Bethesda will release the tools or (dare I say) the source code for ID Tech 7 so modders can go wild? Yes, 2016 Doom had a level editor but it's not the same thing.

I love Doom, particularly the classic games.

As a kid, I played the fuck out of Final Doom on the PS1.

Never got to play any of the WAD's or mods, but I would love to do so one day.

Holy fucking bejesus, there is an entire world of amazing top tier WADS out there.

This channel is like 99% Doom mods.

There's John Carmack's SIGIL (which was great), Brutal Doom, Pirate Doom, etcetera times 1,000,000. There's so many fucking mods. Which is why I would select Doom as my desert island game (provided that I had an internet connection and/or a several terabyte hard drive with map making tools and several hundred mods).

Thanks for the info! I never got to play any Doom WAD's because I mostly played Doom on console.

I'm going to see what all it takes to play Doom and Doom II on a modern PC. I'm sure Steam has it for sale, given it's one of the most popular PC games of all time.

My first DOOM was the Nintendo 64 one, so I always weirded out when people talked about the high speed action and loud explosions.

This is probably why I didn't hate Doom 3.

It's not hard to get Doom running on modern hardware. There are a few source ports you can use.

_Chocolate Doom: This is supposed to be as close to vanilla Doom as possible on modern hardware. Good if you want a purist experience.

-ZDoom and GZDoom: These are interchangeable really. They allow for "modern" controls such as mouselook, jumping, crouching etc. More importantly, they're used to play awesome mods such as Brutal Doom and Pirate Doom. A word of caution about GZDoom though; the creator is a fuckwit who has been removing features so tread lightly.

-ZDL: A handy organizer that allows you to organize mods, games, and source ports. A must if you go crazy with mods.

-Zandronum: Functionally identical to ZDoom and GZDoom but with better multiplayer functionality. I've personally ever got it to work, but I'm not experienced with that sort of thing.

How do I get the original OST playing in ZDoom, the remixes are pigshit

As much as I like Doom 3, it can't be denied how derivative it is of other games, most notably System Shock 2 and Half-Life. I still personally like it since it is an interesting direction for the series and the atmosphere is really good, but I do understand why some fans aren't too thrilled about it.

It's not a bad game. It's not even mediocre. But it had to live up to the Doom legacy and it simply doesn't measure up.
