I agree. I never played any of the Wolfenstein games past Return, but I know perfectly well that the most recent ones are nothing more than a reddit retard's wet dream. Maybe after these layoffs, ID can be turned over to someone who is actually worth the oxygen they breathe.

Also, I genuinely loved Doom 2016. Razortits is a goofball in many ways, but his review of 2016 back in the day is what got me to check it out. I hadn't planned to bother thanks to my disappointment with Doom 3,but 2016 was just what the doctor ordered.

I never bothered with Eternal though, and DA looks like dogshit for reddit fags.
Eternal is a legitimately great game and pretty much better than 2016 in every way.

I share your opinion, but I'm not hating the Astral Boss as hard. I found it really underwhelming though.
For something they hyped up as "the greatest boss fight we ever made," it didn't turn out any better than fine. I liked that it forced me to grapple around and switch to my shield often, but it dragged on just a little too long and I wasn't a fan of the random enemy wave in the middle of its health bar. I also wasn't a fan of him exclusively being behind a barrier, so you never really got a chance to use your melee weapons.

I do think that the 2016 and Eternal are still somewhat in the category of a "good games" when it comes to gameplay - it's a good movement shooter, balls to the wall and turn your brain off type of game. Eternal went the full "arcade mode" route, so to speak, still - it was a fun game to play, nothing really egregious.
But my favorite Doom is actually Doom 3 - and I do feel like IDea of "Doom" went in the totally wrong direction with DA. In 2016 and Eternal you're still massacring demons in a somewhat believable and grounded environment - ruined sci-fi bases, Earth, so on. This was main idea in Doom 3, this was present in classical Doom games. DA just throws it all out of window - and it doesn't really sit well with for some reason.
People can shit on Doom 3 for being crawling-in-the-nigger-ass-with-a-flashlight half-assed horror game but from sci-fi atmosphere perspective - it still holds up well, imo

Evolution of the studio
You are putting American McGee in the same level as Tim Willits or Carmack; it makes it seem like his "departure" was a big loss to id.

Old or (and may Allah forgive me for saying this) a controller player.

If a controller, understandable. I can't imagine playing Eternal with a controller and not keyboard & mouse as God intended.

It is serviceable, but because I disable auto-aim since that hurts my soul, it is suffering in the higher difficulties. You don't have access to the snazzy quick switch gun combos that you have on a keyboard and thus it's an uneven playing field comparing input layouts.

I simply reproduced this list and tracked when each person left the company.

The fact is, American McGee worked on Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Quake, and Quake II, then left id. I can't fathom why you're bothered that I included him on the list. It's a matter of record, not opinion.

Can't clip right now, but Hugo Martin is doing his Slayer's Club stream and he just reiterated two things: id is now the same size as it was back during DOOM 2016, and also that the idTech engine is not dead. Expressed gratitude at all the signalboosting and support people have done for the artists and programmers and etc effected by the layoffs. Also says they still want to tell the story of the Slayer up to the point of the Sarcophagus. (For anyone looking to clip, it's a few minutes before they boot up the game on screen)

Oh my god, I take it back. You will absolutely be using the shield and chain spear in tandem. These Master Arenas do not fuck about.

Who asked for armoured Arch Viles id, WHO?
I sincerely, true & honestly, hope the NIGGERS responsible for the Revelations Arch-vile were part of the layoffs. Holy fucking shit, it's absolutely vile to play against; ESPECIALLY in the Praetor challenges (The Chasm and Uprising ones are AWFUL, fuck the faggots that designed them). You spent 5 minutes straight running around taking shots at the Arch-vile at the right moments while he tanks them like it's nothing while you avoid his constantly respawning minions (non-respawns too if you haven't dealt with them) as he shoves 5 different attacks (including a barrier of shields around him that shoot projectiles) in your face. It completely destroys the flow of combat, it's so goddamn tedious (for reference, I've been playing on vanilla Nightmare and have gotten through mostly fine except for this shit).

Absolutely horrendously unfun enemy design. I also despise the Warlock and to an extent the Acolytes (mainly in Revelations) as well, they share similar problems. Fuck them.

I was starting to clamor for Eternal's Archviles after fighting the DA ones. They zip around and the spear upgrade that's suppose to slow their teleportation is just straight up useless. The DLC enemies are odd to me, either they're complete wet farts like the hammer agaddons and Buzzsaw or they make me want to rip my hair out like ALL of the super heavies they added.

So I haven't played Doom since my computer ran DOS. I'm a big Quake lover, but wanted to give Doom another spin. I run Gentoo Linux so I'm fine with weird obscure source engines and building them and whatnot. But I don't know the ecosystem well enough to feel confident in picking anything. At the moment, I'm thinking Crunchy Doom is probably the direction I wanna go, but again, haven't touched the game or its community in three decades, so I really don't know.

Any fellow friendly Kiwis care to help?

If you like the most faithful reproduction of the game as it came out, and just runs without MSDOS trickery or whatever, then Chocolate Doom is your friend.

For the usual go-to modern port that runs almost everything (with varying degrees of faithfulness), then GZDoom is what people use. (Now apparently UZDoom, but fuck me if I know what changed in that.)

For more modern games, Doom 3 (and BFG edition) is available on Steam. Should be Proton-friendly. I can't speak for 2016 and above though.

Doom 3 has dhwem3 and BFG edition has Chocolate DOOM-3-BFG.

Doom 3 is a very different game. I was referring to the original Doom, which is basically the same engine in Doom 2. Bought the GOG release but I'm not running the remaster or whatever. Not super interested in the releases after Doom 3, but maybe this playthrough will whet my appetite for novelty. Wouldn't bet on it.

I misspoke when I said Crunchy Doom. The one I saw was Crispy, which is Chocolate+QOL. https://fabiangreffrath.github.io/crispy-homepage/ I've seen the word GZDoom before, so leaning in that direction. I guess UZDoom is the one in Gentoo repos.

The last one in the Gentoo repos is DSDA-Doom, which is apparently a successor to PrBoom+. Maybe I'll just merge 'em all and play my way through em or something.

It is. If you want a good simple port for classic-format maps, this is it.

If you want something that supports 'everything', especially the modern UDMF map format and all kinds of mods, choose UZDoom or LZDoom. They share the same codebase, but latter is made by a dev who isn't a total faggot.

Playing Dark Ages: Revelations.
The DLC feels like they managed to get what they were going for with the Dark Ages to work.
I really enjoyed TDA's gameplay and felt it clicked after the first couple chapters. While I generally enjoyed Revelations, it ultimately is just too fucking much; if they're gonna make a fourth nu-DOOM game they really should reset the clock and stop adding more onto the pile. It's comical how much shit you have to keep track of at this point.

It also feels like them backtracking on TDA because part of it's less positive reception is that it wasn't Eternal 2, which doesn't sit right with me. I highly appreciate id going in different directions with all three games and I love all of them on their own merits.

uzdoom ended up being the version that irritated me least, just worked for me, including my anachronistic desire to play with normal mouselook. crispy and dsda both wanted to run in small windows or at constant size. uzdoom just worked, no screwing around.

@Black Snake posted this new thread that belongs here too:

New really, really weird drama. The little girl we see in the hospital flashback sequence apparently has fully textured breasts and panties.

e:
Body is fully modeled, there are no nipples in the diffuse map but a normal map exists for them. Logically they could have just deleted the body parts beyond the arms and legs since that would never be seen, or blacked out the textures. It is just a base human mesh though, so its more laziness than anything.
