DOOM

That's literally the same feeling I have with most of modern gaming (and the rest of the modern entertainment industry). You have big corpos that try too hard to be like movies and less like games, shoehorn in loot crates for people to gamble, and they expect consumers to test the game by the time the game is officially released rather than the companies do the testing themselves
Games used to be by gamers for gamers. It was a lot more niche of an industry and not considered as much of a “marketplace.” Hopefully the industry will go back to that mindset one day but the culture of gaming has permanently shifted I fear because of greed and market capitalization.

After the 2008 worldwide recession, things that are considered "nerdy" would end up being considered serious business for the entire industry by releasing unfinished products and add in trendy modern identity politics among others

After Eternal, I don't think a new game will be any better. I have extreme, extreme worry that with Sweet Baby Inc prowling and trolling through studios, and with Starfield shitting the bed, Bethesda studios itself is already compromised by these very same people. I don't have any hopes that Doom 3 is going to be any good, fellas.
I hope and spray to God and Sneed that Sweet Baby's writers spontaneously combust before they get their filthy troon hands on DOOM.

"3" seems to be a cursed number for Doom. I enjoyed Doom 3, but I understand why people disliked it. NuDOOM 3 though... lol lmao.
People are dumb. DOOM 3 was fire. It was id Software's passion project. John Carmack and a bunch of other developers literally went to the executives and threatened to quit if they didn't let them do a DOOM remake. The executives naturally had the same concerns players had with a remake of DOOM.

It should be noted that Bethesda has always taken a hands-off approach to Doom and given id near complete control over how they develop their games. I don't think they're going to want to mess with that model as things stand.
Xbox is involved now and they're pozzed as fuck. If they were smart, then they'd maintain the hands-off approach. But you have to realize that Xbox executives are some of the dumbest motherfuckers on planet Earth.

You could put a fountain in front of Xbox executives and they'd still find a way to die of dehydration. Hopefully they're too busy with ruining their other studios so they'll leave id Software alone.

Maybe it was done already in the thread (Im not reading over 100 pages, sorry, but you can point out the page if you want), but any recommended wads and mods?
This is based on personal preference so you may or may not enjoy some of these, and also I'm terrible at reviewing things, but I'll still put em out there:

A.L.T, a megawad from a russian Doom clan. Can be weird and cryptic sometimes, but it offers a very... unique experience. I think it's worthwhile even if megawads are really draining and the quality is all over the place.

Action Doom, fairly old total conversion with almost bullshit gameplay that's still enjoyable. Dying in one hit may turn you away from it though. There's a remade version that includes a better system than one-hit death.

Going Down was previously mentioned, but I should mention it here too. Palatable levels with fun gimmicks and a weirdly good soundtrack. You may also enjoy the wacky sense of humor it has.

The Ultimate Torment & Torture is a sort of cinematic Doom experience, has a lot of focus on looks but doesn't sacrifice gameplay all that much. In my opinion it's the only work by Tormentor667 I can tolerate. (note: i may have my rose-tinted glasses on here, might not hold up as well as i think)

Dimension of the Boomed, Quake recreated in the Boom source port, but has a good portion of originality in it too. Relies a bit much on technical wowing of the player with port-specific level design, but that's sort of the idea of the mapsets the creator is planning to make.

Total Chaos, a total conversion in the same vein as 2012-era horror games like Cry of Fear. Not only is it impressively created in the flimsy ass GZDoom engine, but it's also a good horror experience as well.

Hell Ground, the most un-Doom mapset that still uses Doom assets. Its only issue is the small amount of maps, some of which can feel like filler, but it's good the rest of the way. My personal favorite.

Also worth checking out are some of the Doomer Boards Projects, every month or so they release a mapset with a new theme. Noteworthy examples are Auger;Zenith and Zeppelin Armada.

NuDoom has been good and has the potential to be great, but only if they can find a way to completely abandon multiplayer in favor of adding built in support for user created content, because that is and always has been the backbone of Doom's fanbase. Without it, the game simply does not have staying power. Keep people invested with mod content to keep new sales going and make more money selling expansion packs with new campaigns and handcrafted maps. If they ever want to make "Doom universe" a thing they need to make a game people keep coming back to so they can keep financing the story content they want to make. Mapmaking and mod support is they only way they accomplish that.
The real problem with nuDoom Multiplayer is not listening to what their fans really want, which is just traditional multiplayer modes without modern stuff, and mainly, a proper co-op mode, 2016's multiplayer was disliked because it was made by an external studio who only had experience making Multiplayer content for CoD and Halo, so elements from those bled over into the mode, and the movement in general felt off compared to the singleplayer's gameplay, id eventually took over it post release and tried to make it better by adding bots, more modes, and eventually making the DLC maps free, but it was too little, too late.

Then Eternal comes out with that unwanted Battlemode bullshit and yeah, i can see why now some people don't want any multiplayer at all on nuDoom.

We're only talking about nuDoom's multiplayer campaign and how it's crippled. OG Doom's multiplayer wasn't online campaign as when it came out, the concept of multiplayer campaign never existed until a decade later. If you're referring to fan mods that utilized multiplayer campaigns, then they are better than 2016 game's multiplayer campaign
Doom had co-op and deathmatch since launch, and people were playing it online since the mid 90s.

The fuck are you talking about.,

I don't think it's outright impossible for Doom to have good multiplayer but given the nature of AAA game development splitting their efforts between PvE single player and PvE multiplayer is never going to be worth it. I can only assume classic Doom's multiplayer was easier to implement due to the relative simplicity of the engine. Unfortunately for corporate developers like id Software, simple game engines are a thing of the past. I give them credit for developing Eternal's multiplayer in house but it clearly came at the expense of mod support, which would have made the game much more replayable and far more profitable in the long run.

What are the odds that Microcuck's Gaming division will be smart for once in the last 10 years and leave id Software alone? Call me optimistic but part of me is still holding onto hope that the devs won't be replaced with diverse retards.

In all fairness we haven't heard news of any firings at id Software. There is a slim chance that Retard Spencer and his faggot team won't intervene with Year Zero's development.

I'd say it's anyone's guess at this point. I'm on the optimistic side and don't think they're going to try and fix something that isn't broken. My guess is in the short run they'll have Bethesda expand upon the skins/multiplayer/FOMO shit that Doom Eternal had, and if they don't get the profit margins they want they'll do a hostile takeover and completely run id into the ground.

Also a bunch of devs have apparently left id Software. The staff page of new said studio only lists a couple of people who worked on DOOM 2016 and Eternal so I guess the real veterans stayed? In any case, it is rumored that id Software's next game will be another Quake.
Looks like Mick Gordon is working with them. Wouldn't be surprised if his treatment caused a mass exodus.

he did the soundtrack for doom 2016 and eternal as well as some of the newer wolfensteins and killer instinct 2013.

this is what the 'treatment' is in reference to.
All I see here are excuses. No wonder the Doom Eternal soundtrack was ass. Your DOOM 2016 score wasn't that good either, Micky.

Good riddance to that fag and whoever followed him. The new studio formed by "id veterans" includes fucking Insoymniac and Naughty Dog employees. The fact that those retards left is a W and not an L. The next id Software project will probably be even better without these whiny little bitches.

My reaction to this article:

Double posting to cover this old ass topic but:
  1. Chad is based.
  2. Martin is based for telling this fag to do his job and stop moaning.
  3. Bethesfag is cringe for even giving this pretentious retard the time of day.
  4. Mick is a redditor and I'm glad he and his friends are gone. The new studio made up of "id veterans" is filled with Insoymniac and Naughty Dog devs.
...and toxic gamers were using his false accusations as a license to target me with relentless abuse, public shaming and violent rhetoric.
I'm inclined to believe that Martin had to deal with other shit and this guy was a massive pain in the ass. What he should've done was send in the fucking tracks on schedule without issue.

My reaction to this article:

From that article:

Hush money to bury the issue

The new settlement offer was a six-figure sum in return for taking full public responsibility for the failure of the OST. The details were absurd:

  • Marty would keep the Reddit post up indefinitely. He’d never retract his false accusations nor clarify his statement, and his story would be forever considered the truth.
  • I could never discuss DOOM Eternal, the OST, or the Reddit post. If ever asked, I had to say “no comment”.
  • I had to pledge I would never badmouth Marty or anyone working under the Zenimax umbrella, and I could never criticise any product developed by a Zenimax studio.

I had to accept blame for the situation, under contract, for life. In return, I’d be paid a six-figure sum and Marty would save face and be free to continue on his way without any fear of interference of any kind from me.

Go to hell

As far as I was concerned, signing the gag order was out of the question. Giving up my right to tell the truth just to get some money was totally unacceptable. It meant having Marty walk all over me wasn’t so bad as to be beyond being paid off.
There are very, very few musicians out there that would turn down SIX FIGURES to stay mum about a video game soundtrack, even with all that drama. Holy shitballs.

Marty clearly wanted to reconcile their differences and work together in the future and that's not at all what an unreasonable employer would do. If DOOM Eternal's production was so difficult for the soundtrack guy, then imagine how difficult it was for the executive producer. He didn't have time to babysit Mick or address all of his concerns.

I don't think any employer would want to hire Mick after this whole situation. All this article says is that when shit goes down, Mick would rather defend his own ego instead of the project. It's not at all surprising that he decided to start up a new studio with a bunch of Insoymniac and Naughty Dog rejects.
