I've heard literally nothing about this game online in my usual circles, I've been asking people who told me they loved eternal a few years ago telling me they couldn't finish it because it's too arcadey and platforming focus (but that's what I said years ago and I was mocked for it) and they aren't really interested in more of that if it's gonna cost $80. Is the Doom hype dying out?
I'm actually interested in knowing if Dark Ages is any good or how it plays because I loved 2016 and hated Eternal and I was kinda hoping it was a return to 2016's gameplay, but nobody I know is playing it or talking about it and that's shocking to me.

For me, it falls under the dreaded "it's just okay" tier. The gameplay is enjoyable if not tedious with the melee and parry focus around larger monsters. The mech, turret, and dragon sections all felt like half-baked filler and feel out of place in a modern game. They doubled down on story, so get ready for cutscenes before and after ever mission of an incomprehensible story and characters you aren't going to give a shit about. It felt very Quake 2/4 to me, with the emphasis on high-tech futuristic warfare themes and characters. The weapons overall work as intended, but a lot of the weapons feel redundant or outright get outclassed by the weapon that shares their ammo type. Even the revered Super Shotgun, the Doom workhorse, is almost a downgrade to an upgraded shotgun. A fully upgraded SSG puts out a load of damage, but doesn't offer any utility. Whereas the shotgun when fully upgraded can fire 3 rounds at a time and ignite enemies to replenish armor. Only one or two weapons are useful when fighting large enemies like Cyberdemons because most of the combat loop is going to involve you repeatedly parrying melee attacks and returning with your own. You would think you would be able to fight them from a distance, but both the Cyberdemon and Arachnotron have rapid fire hitscan weapons that require you to fight them close range, since your shield will break if you try to soak the shots and fight at a distance.

I don't hate it, but considering I got it from Gamepass, I wouldn't feel satisfied paying full price for it. It's not bad, it's okay as an FPS, but it's nowhere near the revolutions that Doom 2016 and Eternal were. It almost feels like a case of Quake 2, Doom 3, and Rage where the game was built to showcase a shiney new piece of engine technology while the gameplay elements were lackluster or half baked. Story and presentation wise, it reminds me of the original E3 trailer for Doom 2016 back when it was planned to be a grey modern military shooter. The assets that Croteam made for that project eventually got folded into Serious Sam 3: BFE.

idk what drooling retards you're talking to but there's no real platforming in TDA at all
 
Hunkered down and finished the last few chapters tonight. Now that I'm done with the game, I really could have done without the shield parrying mechanic. That second last boss fight was so fucking frustrating because of the constant parrying. Like, this is a fucking DOOM game. I shouldn't have to be parrying a fucking thing. Definitely feels like the game was developed during the From Software craze and someone at ID was smoking crack and said ''We got to add parrying to our next game!'' ''But sir, it's DOOM.'' ''I don't give a shit! Put it in!''

On imdb it shows me THREE nigger voice actors, dark ages ... Europe ... yeah nothing to see here.

sitting on it for a while i think I prefer it to eternal but mostly because it gives me castlevania vibes.
the sound track is very bland though, mostly because it just sounds like doom music. weird complaint i know but when you lose a talent like mic and all you get is something that's "fine" it feels underwhelming. maybe get some shit to lean into the midevil feeling with the metal because it really doesn't lean into you being "le ebin demon killing knight"
I suspect they would have had much more hype if they were to release this as a Quake game. You could easily tie it into the current nuDoom 'lore' for the fags who care about too. I have also heard basically nothing about this game since its release.
it would have also helped because Nudoom has such a modern identity that quake doesn't have, you can redefine it very easily in comparison.
but im guessing the main problem is the doom marine is such an iconic design thats easy to market as well as the name brand easier to show compared to quake and "the ranger"

Removing the iframes from glory kills is utterly insane
I think there are some I-frames for when you approach the enemy, like when you take out the mace, go forward and hit them. But for some reason, immediately after the hit but before the slo-mo ends, the I-frames go away. I think the logic is that you can freely look around and kind of move during the "executions" but its fucking wild anyway.

Lost count the number of times I went in for a glory kill but wasn't close enough and wasted a melee weapon hit instead.

You can use a shield charge against purple enemies and it's functionally the same thing. You even manage to see the one unique glory kill per monster if you charge in from an elevation.

That's the biggest sin here: From a strong come back with Doom 2016 where iD showed they still know what Doom is about and what fans want, to now getting "just another modern game", Debora Wilson and all the cinematic bullshit gimmicks and everything inbetween included. Doom is slop now, if people want to play actual Doom they will play various WADs or Boomer(Trooner) shooters instead. No wonder nobody talks about it, I can't seem to find much organic discussion around it either.

That's another thing: WADs are free and Boom Shoots are usually on the cheaper side, especially on a sale. Who the fuck is going to pay 80$ for what, 10 hours or so, especially with such high technical requirements on the PC?

Hexen/Heretic were already mentioned, but it's still baffling they went with the Doom IP if they wanted to go this route. I'm not saying don't make a TDA, I'm saying why the fuck does Doomguy have to be there? Thankfully, nobody remembers these games so they can't be raped with a slopboot(yet).
 
Might be because doom slayer is a mascot of the nudoom. Does Quakeguy fit this role? Baratus, Daedolon, Parias?
 
I looked at gameplay for the new Doom game and it looks like "press X to Green".
It gets worse as the game progresses, you don't HAVE to parry, and a good majority of the enemies aren't too hostile about it. The super heavy demons are the exceptions, but at least here the Marauder type enemy actually fits better with the core gameplay. Doesn't make them less of a dick, though.
