DOOM

I have a feeling I'm going to be crucified but... how about that DoomRL? Doom the Rogue-like, not officially a Doom game, it's a top-down dungeon crawler, with randomly generated "dungeons" and a leveling system. Obviously it's "set" in the Doom universe (the first two). It was a fun little game I've played for a bit, I'd recommend if it sounds like your sort of thing.

someone remade Quake 2's PS1 port in Doom's engine.
It includes near perfect recreations of Quake 2's weapons and the modder also recreated the port's deathmatch maps.

Dammit, I wanna make an actual, semi-serious map for the game but I have no ideas on how the map would actually play. I mean, making a big room with bazinga textures and filling it full of Cyberdemons is fun and all, but sometimes you just wanna make your bazinga-textured map actually playable.

I played DoomRL some months ago, made it up to the Cyberdemon only to die. Aside from the roguelike, anyone here ever played the Doom RPG? As far as I remember, it was a cellphone game and for what it was worth, it was pretty fun for what it was (though that may just be nostalgia from a memory so as far as I know, it may actually be bad).

I played the second DOOM RPG. I thought it kind of sucked.

Whenever I've made maps I try and focus on a particular central focus point. Like a fountain in the center of the map. Or a particular outer setion

Some of the most memorable maps tend to be built around that concept. IE: Quake's E1m1's entrance hallway and outside section, Duke Nukem 3D's Hollywood Holocaust. Once you build that section then you can build around it and think of where you want the exit to be, where the player should start etc.

It gets more complicated from there. The most important thing about making maps is to practice with building, and remember to playtest.

Thankfully Doom is one of the easiest games to map for, so it should be relatively easy to make something that looks nice

these two videos should tell you everything about him

Wow, I'm fifty seconds into the first video and I already want to punch this asshole in the face.

Yep, this guy is a piece of shit. I like how he's proud of harassing and mocking homeless people and apparently thinks homeless people some how have it great because they can scavenge for change?

...I just got to the rage, oh my fucking god, he's gone from infuriating to hilarious. I like where he starts talking about how "MY CHILDREN WILL NOT LIVE LIKE PEASANTS!", but I can't imagine he's ever seen a woman other than his own mother.

Thank you for showing me this. Thank you.

On topic:

Found what may be the most autistic DOOM wad ever: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Super_Sonic_Doom

I've played it and it's kind of interesting but holy shit, the use of Sonic the Hedgehog elements (specifically monitors instead of regular power ups), and music from the Sega Genesis games. Also tons and tons of in-jokes that no one but this guy probably gets, and he doesn't actually know what the Seven Deadly Sins are; he doesn't include Wrath somehow, but has Vanity instead, which would fall under Pride.

I don't know, the levels are kind of cool but all the super-obscure references and.... for fuck's sake, Sonic the Hedgehog?

About two years ago I dug through crates in my house to find old computer parts and I built a machine with 98 era hardware and installed windows me. I played DOOM, Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem, Quake, and it was great not having to worry about it fucking up, because it was all hardware it was designed for. Unfortunatly one day I rebooted her and she never came back.

So, Doomworld just published the 11th Cacowards in honor of Doom's 21th anniversary, check them out:

Also, you guys probably saw this already, but for those who haven't, WadAHolic released a few weeks ago a new gameplay video from his Total Chaos mod, and it looks pretty good:

Yes, this is running under the Doom engine.

Doom is the shit.

My favorite megawads are Scythe, Scythe 2, Cold As Hell, and Unloved. I generally use Skulltag. Cold As Hell actually has a pretty deep storyline and Unloved does psychological horror about as well as one could expect from a modified 22-year-old game.
Have you heard of Zandronum? It's literally the new form of Skulltag, and while it doesn't come with the Skulltag bulk, it's compatible with it all.

Anyway, I could sperg about all the things I've done to this game, and plan to. The sheer amount of my spergy Doom projects and dickery would turn this post into a wall of text.

Has anyone here tried Oblige! ? It's basically an automated .wad generation tool which allows you to shart out new DOOM levels and entire episodes pretty easily. The downsides of course are that it cannot make keycard squads and it really lacks the care and detail of hand-made maps but it's pretty good if you just want to kick back and have some DOOM fun,and can't think of any .wads to download.
I loved Oblige, and even its predecessor SLIGE. Doom and some of its tools really helped me kick into a command line habit.

Also I propose that when we have to start a new DOOM thread, it's called "DOOM II: Autism on Earth", but that's probably gonna be a while away.

I think I have Zandronum installed, but I have SkullTag pinned to my start menu so that's what I've been using lately. Doesn't matter much to me, since I have tons of hard drive space, SkullTag seems to work fine, and I'm not really trying to do anything fancy other than play a few megawads.

wow How did I forget about that WAD?
I know this is autistic as hell, but there was a phase in my life where I wanted to do that crossover in a more literal sense. These days it's Kingdom Hearts (with shooting games instead of Disney movies), though as a semi-serious joke WAD, and I have a very small amount of it actually completed.
