DOOM

If I had the technical know-how and proper equipment to do some Classic Doom modding, I'd love to see a lot of the old arcade light gun shooters of the 90's remade as total conversion Doom WAD's (or maybe use the Build Engine).

Of course, I'd like to see a CarnEvil TC and maybe afterwards ones based on Time Crisis and House of the Dead.

Area 51, my nigga!

Well shit.
On the one hand, I was looking forward to this all damn year. This and DMC5 were the only games I was seriously looking forward to.

On the other hand, I was scrambling to get a gaming PC built by the time it came out. At least now I don't have to fret about having it all done by then.

Area 51, my nigga!

Amen to that one!

Hell, you could also do one for its sister game Maximum Force TC as well, maybe include some weapons and maps inspired by the first Lethal Enforcers as well since there's an overlapping theme with those two games.

Now, here are some ideas that I had in for making a CarnEvil TC for Classic Doom.

1. There would be four episodes loosely based on the four stages from the original arcade game, which I will list below.
  • Episode 1: Haunted House
  • Episode 2: Rickety Town
  • Episode 3: Freak Show
  • Episode 4: The Big Top

2. Since the OG CarnEvil is fairly short and self-contained, I'd expand on it some more for a Doom TC. A good way to do that would be incorporating some of the weird bits of fanon that the game somehow acquired, such as the identities of the player characters. According to the creators of the game, the player character in CarnEvil was a generic nobody but there's a common fan rumor that the protagonists are a pair of teenagers named Jacob (Player 1) and Lisa (Player 2) and you even see a common "look" for them on DeviantArt.

I've seen videos of the old Zombies TC mod from the mid-90's that was based on the original Dawn of the Dead and it featured a loose character class system of sorts that determined your starting equipment. The three classes in Zombies TC were Thug, Biker, and Cop. Each class started out with a revolver, a hunting rifle, and an M16 respectively.

So, I'm thinking the CarnEvil TC will have three characters to pick from at the start of the game: Jacob, Lisa, and Betty. Each one has their own starting equipment and has certain advantages unique to that character. More on that later.

Jacob is lucky and is able to get ammo and health items more often.

Lisa is tough and takes less damage to her health compared to the other two.

Betty is fast and moves more quickly than the others.

3. Some of the weapons will be changed, of course.
  • Fists: Same as before, but each character has a unique appearance for their unarmed attacks
  • The Pistol is now a typical .38 service revolver
  • The Shotgun is a pistol grip pump-action shotgun colored bright purple, just like the original arcade cabinet.
  • The Chainsaw is the same, but now the handle is a bright red color while the blade is chrome
  • Not sure about what will replace the Chaingun. Kind of torn between an Uzi or a WWII-era machine gun
  • The Super Shotgun is pump-action, but is bright green
  • The Rocket Launcher is brightly colored and shoots fireworks
  • The Plasma Rifle is now a flamethrower
  • The BFG 9000 is now a pressurized acid cannon (a reference to the Acid Bath power-up from the original arcade game)
Each character has their own starting equipment unique to them. Jacob and Lisa both start off with the pistol and while Jacob starts off with extra ammo, Lisa starts off with a chainsaw as well as the pistol. Betty only starts off with her fists but can find a pistol early on in the first map.

Again, this is just idle wishful thinking on my part. But it could be an outline for any potential Doom modding I might do in the future once I learn how to do it.

Delayed till March...
Well that sucks.
On the bright side yay official Doom 64 release on PC!
As for the source ports we had before this EX, Brutal Doom 64 and Retribution were all very good.

There's always Doom 64 EX. Such a great game, which at launch underperformed because it was seen as outdated, but ironically has aged far better than most N64 games

Same. I owned it but didn't play it much because at the time it felt so dated. Which is weird because another game on the Doom engine -Hexen- had such advanced features as jumping and aiming that they could have done that but chose not to.

Anyone here played the Eviternity WAD for Doom 2? Just beaten it today and had a blast. Maps are large and intricate, music is fantastic, and the end boss didn't suck!

I'm always looking for good Doom WADs to play, though if I'm being honest a lot of them don't really scratch that Doom itch. Some of them come close; I liked Unholy Realms even parts of it were completely unfair and 2002 feels like a lost classic Doom game. Most of the time though I feel a little empty.

I still would like to try this though. It sounds neat.

I played through a bit of it but haven't beat it yet. I know the guy who made it is now working on Prodeus as a map maker.

Doom 64 got an official announcement trailer, and it's coming to all consoles.
Weirdly, all the blood in the trailer is green. I don't know why that is. I think the Japanese version had green blood, but why's it in this trailer too? I just hope it's not like that in the final version.

There are going to be quite a few noobs who will get into the game off that trailer alone and get really confused when the actual game is more subdued and the soundtrack is low droning and weird...noises that your brain can't exactly place instead of midi rock.
Granted thats part of what makes Doom 64 awesome but some people are gonna be in for a shock.

Aubrey Hodges' work on the console ports of Doom is vastly underrated. He's sorta like an American Akira Yamaoka and he deserves more recognition for creating such unnerving soundtracks.
