DOOM

Well, some good news. Looks like the Twitch Prime thing isn't happening. Word from a Community Manager. The fact this was even considered is worrying.
Now they need to deal with the inevitible trainwreck of their crazy new DRM. My understanding is that for a lot of people it actually makes Battlemode, which is funny considering it’s ostensibly an anticheat, completely unplayable in addition to tanking the overall performance of what was previously a very well-optimized game. They apparently also removed the movement restriction from the plasma gun’s beam mod as well as speeding up the buildup. I was curious on if it was viable now before I heard about the drm shit.

They were doing so well, too.

Public perception of id and Doom Eternal was great, but now everyone's pissed because they stealth installed a rootkit into everyone's PCs.

Shameful.

You know what's interesting about this to me? Just last year, Bethesda released Rage 2 and Denuvo buttfucked the performance leading to scathing feedback from fans. They removed it, which led to better performance, and people now consider Rage 2 to be decent.

I don't understand the thought process of adding in Denuvo after the game has already released, especially after all the extremely negative feedback with every other game it's been added to. I'm hoping that they walk back on it; id's got a better track record of listening to fan feedback than most developers but the higher-ups at Bethesda might not be so willing to listen.

If a fraction of the people demanding their money back get it, they're not going to ignore that. Even Bethesda listened when people started flipping shit over Fallout 76. Money talks.

I saw a few of the recent Steam reviews state that they were getting refunds.

Speaking of, the number of negative reviews has shot up to 950. That isn't a number you can easily ignore. Within 24 hours, nearly a thousand people wrote reviews specifically to complain about this issue. I had my doubts initially, but even Bethesda knows that isn't a good look for them.

The same friggin thing happened with Quake Champions too back when it came out. People discovered it installed secret spyware 'anti-cheat' programs on your pc when you installed it, got pissed, and Bethesda removed it while giving a hollow 'we're sorry we care too much' speech. Now they're caught doing it again, these fuckers never learn do they?

ZeniMax, et. al, won't give a shit until it hurts their bottom end.

I can see an increase in piracy of certain titles because of the DRM shit they put in. It'll lead to publishers putting more DRM to prevent it. Just starting a vicious cycle. Its probably worse now of days since a lot of games are multiplayer only and if you wanna play on official servers, you have to have a legit, drm copy.

Life's a bitch.

So this is, what, the third attempt from Bethesda to sneak in rootkits into people's computers? That's just fucked up.

I loved Doom Eternal, absolutely adored it. I didn't finish it because I didn't want to rush and just see it end. I wanted to savor every moment. Everything is just so well designed and beautiful to look at.

And now I just installed it and gave it a negative review on Steam for this bullshit DRM. As a buyfag I bought not because I couldn't pirate but because I do believe in the concept of voting with one's wallet. For Bethesda to throw in DRM after I purchased it is such an egregious betrayal and now I will never again buy one of their titles until it's heavily discounted and past the point of them bothering to update it. I frankly feel betrayed by this action. In my mind it's an act that should be illegal or players should be able to refund the game no matter how many hours they've played it.

I truly hope Bethesda listens to players like me and removes the DRM immediately, we'll have to see if they reverse course as they did when they took back Skyrim's paid mod fiasco. If not fuck em, I've got a whole backlog of games and worst case scenario I'll just pirate the game. It's well within my rights as a consoomer since I already legally purchased the damn thing. The funny thing is I probably would have bought the game if it had this DRM from the get go. Bethesda has lost big support from a very passionate paying customer thanks to this.

It's strange, because id did eventually remove Denuvo from DOOM 2016 after a year or so. To see them going back to putting this garbage back in DOOM Eternal is going to make me put it off till they too, inevitably remove it when sales are no longer relevant.

You, me, and the 2057 people (!!) who wrote a negative review in direct response to the DRM feel the same, man. After everything that had happened, Doom Eternal was shaping up to be the single best game of 2020, the game that was hyped up, met and exceeded the expectations of everyone who was excited for it, and managed to avoid controversy where every other major release, be it Last of Us 2 or the FF7 Remake, became drama magnets. In the face of all that, Doom Eternal stood strong as the only big game to actually cater to its fans and deliver a product everyone would like.

Until now anyway. Now that title probably belongs to fucking Animal Crossing, because at least Animal Crossing isn't installing spyware onto your devices.

Well my post in TLOU: Part II aged like milk.

2020 is shaping up to be the year of big gaming disappointments. RE3 (2020) fucked up because Capcom cut out far too much stuff; FF7R fucked up because it lied about being a remake and went full Kingdom Hearts. XCOM fucked up by pussying out, lowering the difficulty and going full woke. Now a sequel to what many people consider one of the best games of the last console generation fucks up by giving a big fuck you to everyone who had the least bit of interest in the first game! Doom: Eternal fucked up by installing malware onto people's computers after Bethesda updated it too!

There, fixed.

Also, I forgot about Half-Life: Alyx. That game did actually live up to the hype. Heard that the VR controls and immersion were damn good, and it's considered one of the best VR games ever made (so far). People were kinda iffy on having to pay $500-$1,000 for the experience valve intended, but at least the post-launch content hasn't ruined the game in anyway.

And apparently some obscure franchise for furries called animal crossing also lived up to people's expectations. It's newest game is considered pretty dope. Whatever that is.

As someone who played and enjoyed the first three Doom games, and played through Doom (2016) on Nightmare difficulty, it's disappointing (in addition to the other screw ups this year) that the same schmucks behind fallout 76 decided to get involved and fuck it up for everyone else. If I was going to buy it before, I'm not now. Time to go sailing with Mullvad I guess.

Although, I'm hoping they bother fixing the mess they made.

The number of negative reviews on Steam is ballooning. Yesterday, there was a total of 1260 negative reviews over the course of a single day. Right now there are currently 1359 negative reviews, almost a hundred more than yesterday's results, and they aren't slowing down.

For those keeping track, that's 2619 total negative reviews between yesterday and now. That is also 562 more reviews than when I made my previous post this morning. That is insane. I have never seen review bombing on this scale before, especially not for a game that people actually love. Leave it to Bethesda to fuck up the one good thing they had going for them.

‘Phew we dodged a bullet with that whole mick Gordon thing, what do we do now?’

‘Uh let’s try cramming some secret spyware into our game again and hope nobody notices’
