DOOM

So I decided to give Doom Eternal a second shot, considering I refunded it during the Denuvo Anti-Cheat fiasco and just wasn't enjoying the game. I beat it using the original save-file and got most of the upgrades, and I have to say replaying the initial levels with all equipment, weapons, and most of the upgrades at a higher difficulty, it's more fun than the first time you boot up. I am starting a ultra-violence run right now and I am gritting my teeth.

Get the micro missiles before the scope on the starting levels, use sticky bombs for weak points. you'll get significantly more utility out of the increased damage when going up against early game heavies. For further insurance against heavies, consider saving up chainsaw fuel until you get 3 pips. Those are some strategies I use when I try UN.

Anyone here heard of MtPain27? I heard of him through decino. He does a series called Dean of Doom which basically reviews WADs level by level, grading them on their difficulty and overall quality. I like his videos; they're insightful and give me a good idea of what the WAD as a whole is like in terms of aesthetics and difficulty. About the only thing I don't like is that he insists on pistol starting each level, which makes me wonder somewhat how difficult some of the maps are, like if they're harder because he's pistol starting whereas I prefer keeping my weapons.

Here are a couple of videos.

Eternal is a such a letdown compared to 2016 in that if you pick the wrong upgrades early on, some of the maps become near impossible. I am talking about PS4/Xbone versions with autoaim disabled.

Would be neat if the addressed the whole Doomguy/Isabelle fanfare with an easter egg, ala Dopefish, but this is both Bethesda and Nintendo we're talking about.

Playing through Doom Eternal now because it's on gamepass.

I go from loving it one minute to wanting to uninstall it the next. Whoever decided to turn parts of the game into Super fucking Mario should have their legs broken. Also, you never really feel like the badass Doomguy because you are constantly scrambling around for ammo/health and it takes fuck all to kill you.

I finally got around to playing through it and I liked it well enough. I need to put more time into it to decide if I prefer it to 2016 or not. At first I was disappointed they removed the fun death animations in favor of the life system but several deaths later where I got stuck between something like a hand kart and mancubus made me learn to accept that loss.

The marauder was a cool idea but the execution was a little off. Having a demon you need to counter is fine but it kind of sucks when he just doesn't want to cooperate with you. I also really wish he didn't have the wolves.

I'd had always hoped the Doom Slayer would be revealed to be OG Doomguy but never in my wildest dreams did I expect it to be the Doom Comic one or more specifically the dramatic reading version of him. I lost my shit at him him bringing up huge guts. I also have to assume the Khan Maker was trying to bribe him into letting her convert the Earth in exchange for Daisy. I'm sure the DLC will answer this but I couldn't help but notice how Hayden would use the phrase "your people" instead of "our people" and what happened with VEGA.

Looking at all the aftermath of Hell on Earth makes me really want to see what the opening stages of the invasions where like when ARC was actively trying to fight the hordes of hell.

Now I just need to get around to getting the dlc.

You are playing the OG doom marine it's just that the devs wanted to insert the cheesy lines that the comic was known for.

With the ammo system, the chainsaw is supposed to be used on the fodder Demons (zombies, imps, soldiers), which gives you ammo. The first of the three charges you get recharges over time, but you can find canisters in the environment occasionally. The recharge, in my experience, isn't too bad, by the time you burn through the ammo you have gotten from it, you should be recharged. Even so, you're encouraged to switch up the weapons you use, and different weapons and mods are more effective on certain enemies than others. For example, when it comes to enemies with destructible cannons, like the Mancubus, or the Arachnatron, you use the Shotgun's Sticky Bombs, or the Rifle's Scope, to take them out. As for how fragile the Slayer is, you do have the double dash to compensate, allowing for more dodging around. Moreso than Doom 2016, you're encouraged to keep mobile, and when on the ground, the dash refills quickly. Granted, the dash ability is in the second level, and I don't know if you've reached that yet.

You playing on Xbox, or PC?

My first run was absolutely miserable. I lowered down to hurt me plenty because I kept getting ass reamed by prowlers and snake ladies. As I learned how the devs wanted me to play the game, it became tolerable, and by the end it was almost fun. The master levels helped me in getting used to weapon switching and flying around with the meathook.

Just finished the ARC Complex level and i have to say that i'm enjoying it a lot more now. You start out fragile as fuck, scrambling for ammo/health but once you get into the mindset of working toward what particular resource you need in a fight and what weapons you should be using againist certain enemies then it becomes a lot more fun.

It's actually quite an interesting choice by the devs to make it so nuanced when people are expecting a balls-to-the-wall FPS.

Eternal's interesting in that it has a steeper learning curve than most people anticipated. A lot of people, myself included, expected it to be "Doom 2016 but more," but the game overhauled all the mechanics so that it would have a greater degree of depth and intensity than 2016 ever did. It's a game that asks you to stick with it because the early hours are going to be tough (there's absolutely no shame in turning down the difficulty if you ask me), but once everything clicks into place, it becomes an insanely cathartic and chaotic shooter.

It's not really a learning curve, as much as an actual wall that you're gonna slam into over and over until you finally get what the devs want you to do: juggle multiple weapons mid-air, comboing grenades/ice bombs and only occasionally glory killing.

Am I the only one having progression problems in the new master level? Every time I make it past the first arena the door animation shatters but the door stays there. You're playing a guy that literally tears demons with his bear hands and he can't pass through a glass door. Resets aren't working. Which is the shame because the start was actually quite intense and fun.

What the fuck.

I'm guessing limited ammo is one of the ways the game hobbles you. You are very fast, you can kill demons even faster, and you'll never run out of resources but you have to sit through the animation.

id fucked up with this release. They are aware of their fuckups and are in the process of making a patch to hopefully unfuck a number of things, though. ETA should be early this week.

Regarding the new master level itself, I stumbled on one of the more talented speedrunners I've seen for DE thus far, and have three major takeaways:

1. Hugo Martin loves trolling the player, to the point that his team's level design dances the line between challenging and cheap.
2. This speedrunner, one of the best I've seen thus far, is a massive weeb. I'm sure that says something about Doom Eternal.
3. The Heavy AR's scope, rather than just being a headshot machine, is also surprisingly viable as a sort of ranged shotgun. Even for bodyshots it seems like it's good to incorporate it into the core gun loop. It does good damage and makes it a lot easier to distribute your ammo usage when juggling single shot weapons, which in turn makes chainsawing less frequent and more efficient.

Oh that was clear from them bringing us rip and tear in 2016 but now with him voicing the lines I have to believe he is doing all of them in his head. Every glory kill comes with a "Here comes the night train!"

So in other news, Bethesda has updated the classic Doom games to run their "enhanced versions" on PC. Essentially it allows the game to run at 60 fps, includes widescreen support, adds mouse support, and cleans up the visuals and audio. It also offers add-ons, which are WADs like Sigil and Back to Saturn. In short, it's everything the source ports have done for decades albeit now in the official release. You can still play the original DOS game and tinker with different source ports, it's just now you don't have to go through the process of downloading and running the source port if you want a more modernized Doom.

Personally, I think you're better off using GZDoom and the like because they feel better to play. The enhanced versions aren't bad by any means, but they certainly pale in comparison to the more popular source ports. At the same time, this is a nice thing to add for newcomers who might not know how to operate source ports, let alone know they exist to begin with.
I recently beat these updated versions of Doom 1 and 2 on steam, it was a blast. They are timeless classics that imo have aged very well.
