GZDoom's lead dev is a grumpy retirement age german guy who doesn't really give much of a crap about such things. Besides, you can just use the engine without participating in the off-topic sections of the community. With a hard "no freak devs" policy there won't be much software left for you in the world to enjoy.

Don't let its community ruin your use of the source port. Yes the ZDoom community is filled with retards, but to have that reason stop you from having fun with the source port is stupid. For example the emulation community contains a whole bunch of autists, but that won't stop me from emulating games.

Not sure about sourceports but with game mods nothing's stopping you from doing a better or bullshitless version of their project. Bonus points if what you did ends up being more popular than the original work.
