DOTA 2

I will play ranked for the first time once I am back in the US and have a wired Internet connection. I have very stable Internet with Starlink but my ping is a bit crazy and unpredictable.

Right now the pool of heroes I feel comfortable playing competitively is literally just Underlord, so in that time I want to get up to at least 3. I think the reason I really liked Hoodwink is the same reason I like Underlord: they are both good passive farmers that can move around, clean a single wave up mid-lane, and then get out. Thinking of it, that is also how I played Nature's Prophet. Supposedly he's back in the meta now so I may look into it.
Understandable. I'm mostly memeing. But seriously unranked is cancer that part is not a meme lol.

I'm lvl 30 underlord, big fan of what the hero does. NP and dawnbreaker are a couple heroes I would look at. Very mobile or have mobility ults and are play making heroes. NP is more or less being played support in my games. Occasionally mid. Dawnbreaker offlaner. A few other potential heroes are the spirits, qop, and puck. All of those heroes are a lot of fun, pretty dynamic with the way you play them and definitely more uptempo, not too much sitting around playing PvE WoW farming simulator with them.

games were dudes just die, respawn, feed, repeat. for an hour. that you're stuck in. that's why you can't really recommend dota to anyone.
Describe DotA to me.

Idk for me an 1h investment just isn't worth it. Not gonna get stuck for 1h.

Leaver penalty is harsh. Why amI stuck in 1h long games that are lost in the pick phase. If DotA2 was more lenient on leaving it would be much better. Sometimes games are just lost, there's no worth fighting.

In AoE2 you can leave/resign any time. So what if the other people got invested into it? Some games are over way before the 1h mark. There's a sort of queue penalty if you resign too early, but I don't see why DotA can't have that. 20 min games with 5 sureenders is a lot better than 40 mins games where everyone rages and shittalks each other.

There are so few games that you can't recover from if your team is willing to try. There are a million recovery mechanics in DotA. I always say to my team "they make one big mistake and we are back in the game" and I would say 40% of the time we win those games, and probably 75% of them we at least have a chance at winning. Be the one who is upbeat and willing to be encouraging to your team = be rewarded. I'm super toxic in my own way but I like winning so hey.

That 25% of truly unwinnable games are like suicide bait though. 🙃

Underlord is just so versatile and useful right now, even with the aura nerfs. If you can get a good support that will stack for you then you hit the jackpot.

No, no, no, Jersh, you gotta play like my team mates and buy Midas into Aghs, dood! Doesn't matter what hero you play, as long as you are not pos 1 or 2 you gotta get that Midas and Aghs ASAP!

I hate my premade friend sometimes. NP, Ogre, Shadow Shaman, Lion, Abaddon, Midas into Aghs. Make it stop.

Fuck Enchantress. What's the fucking point of Silver Edge countering OP passives if it doesn't last long enough to kill an ench self healing. Shouldn't need like 3 silver edges to counter an ench or BB

Am I misremembering or did Nullifier turn off passives too? I know it constantly purges buffs, which is also great against Ench's healing.

quick edit: Nullifier only dispels the target every 0.25 seconds, "break" is the mechanic that disables passives and the only item that does it is Silver Edge. The strongest break I guess is Doom.

big patch today.
Notable changes are bracer/band/talisman no longer double at 25m and that almost all mana and health restorative items as well as many auras are now worse.
As a Doom player though i feel completely fucked over. Hero was already terrible. His passive change actually costs you like 700+ damage late game on just a single target. 350+ damage per extra target. Hero is dead.

If you aren't in high MMR the pick phase literally doesn't matter. Everyone is so retarded and there really isn't meta until you get into prebuilt high MMR teams. You shouldn't listen to retards on youtube trying to define current meta. If you're good you could roll the carrys' heads with Vengeful or any hard support if you're decent.

Offlane solo doom is great. Most people play him as a teamfight support which is great for countering certain heroes but if you play him as a melee carry you're one of the strongest strength heroes with high regen and insane uptime for movement speed. IIRC he has 50% uptime on scorched Earth making you one of the fastest and tankiest early/mid game team heroes. Sometimes having Doom up is scarier for the enemy committing than even using Doom, so you can harass and outlane most melee carries and their support. Doom is also insane as a jungler-hunter. Doom is also the ultimate Axe counterpick.

If you're ever up against a solo carry or two safelaners who are melee, try maxing infernal blade first. It has more damage potential than even Ogremagi at level 7. It has almost zero cooldown too. Instead of phase boots for chase potential try treads and then swap to phase boots later, if your positioning catches someone off guard you're already faster than most people, plus tread swapping helps immensely with flat mana regen as doom has a small mana pool early on. The Kobold Foremans give a +3 FLAT mana/s which is enough to sustain your mana pool for tread swap casting indefinitely. Getting 2 Infernal Blades off is instant death for a support or carry early game. You can disregard auto attacks if someone turns around and runs and simply follow them for those juicy infernal bitchslaps.

One thing some people don't understand when counterpicking is that you need to know every hero's power spike timeframes and where yours will fit in. Doom has a massive power spike between 4-7. Your powerspike goal is being able to bully the safelane carry and support out of the lane unless they hard counter you ie antimage, viper, rubic, etc. Against, say, a Huskar who has a very early power spike and then an insane spike around 7-11 or if fed, your spike window should allow you to shit on them for a solid 5-10 minutes. If done correctly you can just bully them for the rest of the game. Being able to shit on a single person is Doom's greatest asset. It's essentially his core mechanic. If you can shut down a role 1 you've basically won the early and mid game.

Take note that Doom's winrate skyrockets when games go longer than 40 minutes by a huge margin, a facet some people overlook when counterpicking:

Also Veil of Discord is underrated on Doom.

UL not impacted but wtf did they do to arcane boots? who in the game is benefiting from no fucking mana?

Idk how long its been since you've played, but the purchase timing and quantity provided by arcane boots was enabling degen behavior in a lot of lanes.

Underlord did get some minor nerfs. He is decent but has some really bad lanes and poor recovery if you lose lane (very reliant on your support for lane). If you look at the top offlaners of the last couple patches they have a built in hyper farming mechanisms that can be used earlier and faster.

Apparently carries had started building them. I think this also impacts medusa being so strong too.
Offlane solo doom is great.
Doom just lost 15% damage on everything that wasn't autos, effectively. Including pure damage from R. This means if you hit 6 before your lane opponent now you're much less capable of winning all in.
Doom is currently 46% winrate. I expect him to drop to 40% or lower. He is also impacted by mana boots changes as it is very easy to run OoM in lane. R has a big cost too. You likely don't bully anyone early anymore.
Real winners from this patch include Bloodseeker though. No mana cost on Q means farming should be faster and the bracer nerf means rupture is more likely to actually kill now.
Speaking of the bracer nerf is very felt on some characters like Undying. Missing that 600hp from double bracers midgame really hurts.
I think starter items being changed will also make the games even more snowbally, since technically being able to buy stats for that cheap was a comeback mechanic itself.

This is likely deliberate. In lower tiers, games last way too fucking long, in part because comeback mechanics make draft pick more important and in teams that can't close out matches they just drag on and eventually decay into draft-based wins. I feel that games that are lost simply because the effective lead eats away over time and draft takes over, almost always because your team is too fucking stupid to finish the match with their advantage, are NOT FUN for either team. NOBODY is enjoying the match at 65 minutes.

There's a different between "lead rot" (agony) vs epic cumback teamfight unexpected 0-for-5 35 minutes in followed up by a crazy push (fun).

honestly the most forward towers should just start taking passive damage after 35 minutes, fuck what's fair, have god nuke the ancients at 50 and call it a draw.

As a certified baddy (at the game) my games are extremely swingy. I have had several 24m games in the last two weeks because one team gets ahead in a lane and nobody can shut down the person who is out of control. Being asked to bite the curb isn't much fun either. I stand by my best games being equal right up until the end, a real slugfest, regardless of how long the game goes. I am worried I will just start getting mostly 20-26m games which aren't fun even if I am winning. I don't feel like I learn anything.

AND STOP BUFFING SLOWS I HATE SLOWS I HATE MOVING AT 10% FUCKING MOVESPEED IN GAMES AGAINST VENO
Speaking of why the fuck did they buff Veno this shit is weapons grade cancer right now. I heckin love 56% slow because I walked up to wave to last hit.
