🐮 Lolcow Doug Jackson / SV Seeker - Boomer hubris personified, an incompetent lunatic's dreams slowly crumbling to dust because of his own poor decisions.

Ugh, whatever sheeple. You’ve just been taken in by Big Anchor.

I love that Doug instinctively knows better than anyone else in his comments and berates them for giving suggestions.

Time to fix the gangway which appears to have had some serious damage to the mechanism when Doug backed into a dock.

Do you have a torn up grinding wheel? Don’t be a wuss, just go slow and it will even out (and probably not explode into shrapnel).

Cutting parts off, that’s what the lake is for, to be a trash can for your bolts.

But the best moment is at the start when he installs an LCD arm inside the cabin and shows how easily the tv now moves around. Great! I’m sure that tv isn’t going to go swinging out when you’re in a storm, right Doug?

Oh, and there’s a phrase, “heat it and beat it” for fixing metal parts. Heat them up with a torch and then pound them into shape. Clearly this is dogma and you’re one of those sheeple if you follow this ancient advice. Doug shows you can eventually knock the metal back into shape by just beating on it. Ten times the effort but you didn’t blindly follow Big Torch’s advice.

Checkmate you metallurgy simps.

Good God that is a gnarly grinder wheel.

"Most people would throw this chewed up disk away, but if your careful, you can use it!"

I am forced to assume that 'careful' must mean standing barefoot on the edge of a boat, in shorts, with no eye protection

Doug tries to play coy.

Oh and he's been testing props too. The result? The magnificent Sinker has less than half the thrust he'd be satisfied with, but then again he already knew this from the humperdumper testing so who's he trying to fool?
I'd just like to remind you his prop unpitches at anything above 6.5 knots. Doug has been hardcore coping about this being sufficient speed for his secondary propulsion but the problem isn't so much the lack of speed while motoring rather the fact that any serious swell is going to put too much pressure on the prop and unpitch it, leaving him dead in the water.

L O L that fucking grinder disk

I'm not a stickler for safety by any means but grinders aren't to be fucked around with. If for whatever reason you don't have the guard on the wheel (and there are some cases where it's best to take it off) you need a face shield, long pants and close toed shoes. The latter two always, regardless. If you're using a chipped wheel, put the stupid guard back on.

A grinder spins north of 3k RPM and whether you're careful or not a chewed up disk can just decide to explode into shrapnel. I've had numerous cheap wheels explode for no reason at all. He's going to end up with an awful injury if that thing ever catches and kicks back or just explodes.

Here's a mirror of the Love me Tender video by Sidney_Thumbless.

He didn't learn a god damned thing! Poor welds, twisted hull, undersized motor. Amazing
The tender was made well into the project and long after the outer hull of the seether was complete. At that point with so much time and so much money already sunk into the project, why question the garbage design work that would doom you with an unstable, overweight, slow piece of shit that wouldn't even feature one of the most basic properties of any boat, symmetry? No, that is fear talking. Much better to start welding and if it don't fit, get the grinder and a circular saw.
There's that one comment he makes too about not wanting a pretty boat because it's a work boat but what he fails to appreciate is that ugly birdshit beads are clear signs of weak welds. Uniformity gives you a hint that the weld has achieved full penetration and formed a homogenous bond free of inclusions. Manual welding is a form of craftsmanship and if not enough care is taken the consequences can be far worse than not qualifying for an instagram post.

"Hey boss, my weld looks like my dog's breakfast after taking it for a walk, what do you want me to do about it?"
"Did your mother raise you? Grab the grinder, the one without the guard."

If you're wondering what a mig welded aluminum bead should look like, here's an example of mine:

I'm unsure if KF supports H.265, if not let me know.

Is that actually your stack of dimes weld @Penrowe?
No. That is just me oscillating the torch. Helps with shoulder fatigue and makes it easier to achieve a nice uniform bead since with just a straight pass you'll be able to notice even very small changes in speed/direction. Oscillations blend it all together and also allow you to build up a thicker throat.
In the below example is a weld that is going to end up far stronger than it needs to regardless so I take some artistic liberties but this is still a single continuous bead. I've seen some people do that weird "pulsed" MIG shit that just ends up looking like a row of fish eyes, aka what I'd lay down to fill a big gap before running a very hot weld to finish it off. That nonsense is weak and doesn't even look good, Doug has those welds all over his boat.
Here's also a pressure vessel done with TIG, wholly unnecessary but it's done that way to comply with code.

I hadn’t seen that aluminum tender beast before. The supercut version is excellent at showing Doug in all his glory. He’s totally contemptuous of safety or other skilled workers and would rather bull ahead into oblivion rather than ask an expert for some guidance.

Let’s face it, that’s a pretty common guy trait but Doug takes it to the next level. Scoffing at wee little babies who don’t want to step on exposed bolts, or cowards who use eye protection and guards on their spinning death disk tools. Using a table saw to round off small parts. Haha Doug is a walking after school special on shop class safety.

PS: those are really nice looking welds Penrowe.

Another day, another issue with the engine. This time the turbocharger was leaking until a nice guy came by and did some testing to show the pipes were leaking. Apparently there were some fittings that weren’t tightened down properly.

The body chopper electrical panel is on full display here as Doug enthuses about the bollard pull test they’re going to do now that the turbo is fixed. It’s about setting a baseline for performance for the engine because the Seeker is going to pull equipment and unbeach itself and do all kinds of things in the future. He’s already done one of these pull tests in the past so it will be interesting to see if there’s any difference in power these days.

The boat is still in Kerr lake. With all the engine and prop trouble at least he isn’t rushing off down the river to the Gulf.

I don't know much about boats
I don't know much about masts
I don't know much about welding
But...
I know that looks atrocious

I wondered what happened to the tender. That video was amazing. I didn't realize he claimed they took the electronics off of the VW Diesel. I don't know where you would find mechanical injectors and a mechanical fuel pump for somthing like that. I think even the Diesel VW Rabbits had electronic injectors and fuel pumps. If they did cobble somthing together I bet it dropped the horsepower by at least 15%.

The bit on the table saw is peak Doug. Takes the time to CNC cut mermaid shelf brackets and makes door latch bits that look like swords, mermaids and dildos or whatever. Has a lathe and a plasma cutter. Rather than use any of those or even a hole saw, becase apparently only pussies use the right tool for the job, Doug is hacking around on a table saw with who knows what kind of blade.

The tender turned in to a miniature SV Sinker. Overweight, under powered, full of bad welds and ultimately unstable and unusable.

It is great that the true believers have lost control of the subreddit. Maybe we will get some more of those videos. It is fun to watch Doug say "Whatever we do, we don't want X." Then immediately see the clip where X happens and watch Doug say "We like X, X is actually better."

Penrowe, that's some nice looking welding.
I know just enough about welding to know that mig welding aluminum is tricky.
From what I hear you can't do it on a 110 Volt machine, the oxide burns off at a higher temp than the melting point so you have to clean it off and AL doesn't change colors as it melts so it is tricky to be sure you are running the correct temp.

I bet there is more to it than that.

I'm not up to speed on how that place is run, I believe Doug is a mod but does not appear to take any action against even those calling Betsy a boat anchor while he will fiercely defend his youtube and facebook comments against the most mild criticism. It's weird, plebbit is a complete shithole where tranny jannies will police speech just about everywhere but somehow this sub has mutineed and is off the chain.
Or is u/doug_jackson some random nobody who just took his name for laughs?

As for aluminum the main challenges are often machine setup, grounding, safety and cleanliness and less the actual material you're welding (hardly ever needs any prep). It burns through fast but it's easy to get a feel for appropriate speed/feed. I could train any completely green novice to be fully proficient on MIG/ALU within two weeks maximum.

doug_jackson is not doug and ocassionally posts using actual human spellings and has not been 'on board' with doug's 'crew' since the debilitating brain blast incident. i think you need to stop drinking the grimdark 'plebbit' koolaid here, bro. im like so shocked that people are able to have an open ass discussion on an evil 1984-like web site such as reddit. lmao
