"Doxing" in 2025

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Phonebooking is great for a couple of reasons.
1. It pays respect to where most doxxing originally came from
2. It points the asshole who got phonebooked to a source of the legit problem (ie data brokers).
3. Unmasking is a tranny term and is really fucking gay and lame. It also is inherently hostile, much like trannies. Using that term, in the long term, will be flipped around as a personal attack as opposed to the ubiquitous nature of the the phone book.

Personally I don't like the idea of a word filter, especially one that retroactively changes old posts, since there has been and I'm sure will continue to be instances "doxxing" is used in the approved definition, in discussions about harassment or intimidation by revealing someone's identity/info when it wasn't public. There are bitchy lolcows that "dox" formerly anonymous people as some kind of revenge or witchhunt, for example.

Also since people are discussing compiling public info on the site, I want to throw my two cents in and agree that some autists get carried away. It rubs me the wrong way, for example, that some criminal from a news article's siblings that they might not even interact with get all their info posted (what's the point?), or worse, when someone is misidentified. This has happened so many times during "breaking news" events, but also in a lot of lolcow discussions, the Flutter thread is a specific example I can think of. Completely random blonde women don't need to have their name and pic on the site because a faceblind idiot thinks they might be dating Chrischan. I don't think this should necessarily be policed in a strict way, but maybe mods could encourage users to remove personal info if it's unrelated or incorrect, for the sake of both etiquette and accuracy.

What was origin of the word Dox?

What's the point of adding IRL info of lolcows here anyway? All it does is make the site an easy target.
Moviebob is a great example. Would mock others as basement dwellers, turned out to live in a basement, which he then started to call his "basement apartment".

Edit: I would've said Infodump, but people make a good case for phonebooking. Especially since phonebooks are now obsolete.

Phonebooking is the most direct and clear way of conveying what the information we collect actually is. It implies that its publicly available.

Could automatically replace doxing and doxxing into one of these to avoid problems.

If "skiptracing" is what you do in private, how about "Nulling" for putting it up on a public site?

"I skiptraced that guy last night. He still went to the con because I didn't null him until this morning."

He has to moderate the site within the confines of american law. He is politely asking people to change their behavior because of potential legal issues.
Reposting and compiling publicly available information is not a potential legal issue.
