I once had a teacher who was canned midway through the year due to a mental health/medical issue. With them it was a sudden onset type of deal, they'd had a stellar history and then something went wrong medically and it very quickly went downhill. Wouldn't be surprised if Matt Harris was a similar case where he just really didn't show signs until he was threatening to bomb his own workplace.

Based on the teacher reviews that were posted earlier ITT, he had been crazy for years, they just kept him on forever because in academia you don't just fire a black person.
