I'm necroing this *mostly* dead thread... Pretty much because I'm curious if anybody wants to see me review more Series 2 Episodes of nu-Who...
No. It's dead. Leave it be.
Most of the "fans' who watch current Doctor Who just obsess over how "queer" it is because of Missy and how the Doctor is totally genderfluid uwu
Nobody left watching Dr. Who now but troons.

I dont think the blonde is a troon I think it's the person in the special with David who is called "Rose" for some reason. I'm not gonna watch it, im just gonna read you guys riff on it. Eccleston was the best and it was before Russtle disappeared up his ass thinking his farting aliens doing politics was deeper than it is

I heard RTD wants to do spin offs again, and considering liz sladen isnt really around anymore I just dont see that ending well.
also no matter what i see the star beast at least being decent, it's based on an old 4th doctor comic and will probably memberbearies focused on donna, but Beep the Meep is kino. with shit like baby Yoda, meep has only aged like fine wine in the modern era.
tho if Russell does not address having the doctor repeating the same story by having shit like the toymaker be recreating old adventures and instead treats it like 14 is doing it first the first time he is cringe and cowardly.

Well they can always bring back Torchwood fronted by Barrowman; oh wait, he's been comprehensively cancelled as well. Never convicted or even found civilly liable but expecting that would be fascist.

Russell T Davies is cringe and cowardly. And not half as clever as he thinks he is. He's an overrated smug showman whose work appears initially impressive but is ultimately superficial, shallow and devoid of substance.

Actually it was one of Toymaker's henchmen that dropped the n-word not Toymaker himself. Toymaker just did the cultural appropriation thing dressing in Mandarin garb.

Also, I'm kind of curious as to what Rik Mayall would have done with the character had the planned serial from the Collin Baker era had been made instead of canceled due to the Michael Grade forced hiatus. One of the big "what ifs..." of the original series, as I could have seen the Toymaker replacing Fenric in the McCoy era as it's big bad if Mayall had been able to get the role.
Hindsight has made me fully sympathetic and supportive of Michael Grade trying to kill the cancer before it was too late.

Torchwood epitomizes how RTD operates without the oversight and control mechanisms and continuity (yes believe it or not this was once a slight factor in how the show was made) he had to keep him in check in
Doctor Who and the literal childrens TV department he had keeping him check with Sarah Jane Smith, and the end result is effectively a painfully mediocre prototype for CW network shit at best, and at worst its like an edgetard syfy original movie set in Wales with occasional references to Doctor Who

And thats by the standards of when it released. By currentyear standards its objectively worse than the absolute sludge you find at the bottom of netflix in every way imaginable, no matter what Tumblr melodrama addicts of yore say.

Russell T Davies is cringe and cowardly. And not half as clever as he thinks he is. He's an overrated smug showman whose work appears initially impressive but is ultimately superficial, shallow and devoid of substance.
Which is why his fandom is entirely made up of nostalgia consoomers who started watching doctor who back in 2005-2007. Because without this factored in, the topical references, both "muh serious message" tier and "lol so funny" tier, are absolutely fucking painful to sit through while the acting is disconcertingly hammy in general and downright embarrassing at worst with precious few moments of being "pretty decent" or better.

His only relative "strengths" were passable story concepts (which were not even his to begin with) that more often than not wound up clogged the fuck up by tedious melodrama and actually trying to implement and uphold some vague continuity. The latter one may sound like something of a "absolute fucking minimum" factor for a showrunner, but given the Moffat run and his seeming obsession with introducing massive continuity transforming changes to both setting and characters every five minutes and then not only never mentioning them again but actively fucking contradicting them an episode or two later, RTD showing basic fucking competence in this department is atleast something of a plus.

He can't do that. The franchise is in such dire straits that he can't do the "fuck your nostalgia" line. If he did he wouldn't have brought Tennant back let alone Donna Noble to resolve her ghoulish fate. He would have just brought in the black doctor and his tranny replacement Rose and redone the revival pilot but this time with Boris Johnson as the big bad per RTD's bullshit retcon of the revival pilot in the novelization he did and kept no-selling shit like Chinball did all of the criticism laid at him by fans.

The 60th Anniversary is basically RTD's hail mary to bring back all of the lapsed fans with A. resolution of the Donna Noble storyline and B. bringing back the Tenth Doctor as a new incarnation. Celestial Toymaker is back because he's a classic villain with a huge fan following and because RTD can cast fellow gay Neil Patrick Harris in the role, which will add to the eyeballs watching the specials due to NPH being popular in the all important US marketplace.

The lack of Donna's husband in the promo material and the young girl who while not stated as is clearly going to turn out to be Donna's mixed race daughter, makes me wonder if they are going to have Donna be a widow in the special as the token "nostalgia bad" angle. Donna's husband died (possibly of an illness that wiped out the lottery winnings Doctor left Donna as a mea culpa on her wedding day) and his death and single motherhood most likely replicated Donna's growing up as she did when she was with Ten. And that any hope of a Doctor/Donna relationship will be cut short by Donna wanting to stay loyal to her dead husband's memory, though we'll probably get some form of Peter Pan (another RTD cliche) reference at the end as the anniversary series will end with Donna giving her daughter her blessing to run off with the Doctor "for a quick adventure" the same way Wendy let her kids at the end of Peter Pan go off with Peter "to help with spring cleaning".

Ironically, with the Celestial Toymaker, RTD ironically can retcon Chinball's bastardized Cartmel Masterplan arc with the Jodie Doctor. But that will be the real test because let's face it, RTD's real challenge is going to be making people stick with the show after the anniversary specials and given that we are going to be getting Gay black Doctor and Transgender Rose 2.0, he's going to have his work cut out for him and the fact that he's not begging Catherine Tate to stick around for an additional full season to ease fans into this, makes me worried.

Don't have sympathy for Michael Grade. Dude was a total basic bitch cunt who everyone in the British media despised and reviled due to him being an asshole who hated ALL genre shows and spent his career in television shilling reality TV, game shows, and cheap non-American foreign exports (like when he canceled Dallas and tried to replace it with Neighbors because it was cheaper to license). His only redeeming quality, if you can call it that, was him telling Mary Whitehouse to fuck off when she complained about an explicit sex scene in Singing Detective as far as him being such a cunt that even Whitehouse, who was a raging cunt who everyone feared, ended up on the receiving end of Grade's assholery and in public none the less.

I fail to see how this is a bad thing

Sounds like an accelerationist/arsonist after my own heart. Especially since any measure taken in killing the soap opera genre is automatically justified in the eyes of god.

Sheeit, he even threw hands with the most insufferable government backed morality and decency censor the country knew since the puritans banned christmas in the 1600s.

Honestly though, it could have been literal Jimmy Saville to have been the one to pull the plug on the show at the time and I would still give him kudos for such an act of Old-Yeller'ing. The show was circling the drain in every way imaginable and needed to be put in the ground a good decade or more.

I only hope someone has the balls to repeat what he did in the coming years...

...or months...

...actually weeks would be fine...

...or days for that matter

i just find calling him the 14th doctor the most desperate and confusing part of it. im going to guess theyll pull the rug from under us and reinstate the new guy as 14 but eh probably not

i like the war doctor but moffat really opened the gates for the stupid numbering system. a regular viewer used to go "oh there's x amount of actors, so the fifth actor to play him is the fifth doctor." now it's so convoluted because theres 40 other doctors and the 10th doctor, but again, is actually the 14th?

i also feel like it'll be really irritating if the special's message is "le fanservice is le bad" when the entire writing staff since 2005 has been hacks who love putting their shitty fanwank into canon. season 6B was started by paul cornell. explaining the morbius doctors was chibnall. RTD put a virgin character or two into series 1, and ofc. is putting in some obscure tinpot comic book character in this special. moffat started the wank about the doctor's name, from its le epic secret status to the word doctor coming from the character being so awesomechungus. the only people who are obsessed with continuity is the writers

Nah, they will make Doctor Dindu the official 14th doctor by some contrived way

Technically RTD did this first with the dumb fucking clone of david tennant which was solely done for a dumb fucking cliffhanger and to resolve an even dumber fucking plot thread about the cut off hand. Though to give him credit even he probably didnt expect this resulting in chibnall fucking up the most basic fucking building block of the show anywhere near as badly as he did

It wont.

It will be "fans who want the show to stop utterly fucking sucking and be more like show was when they were young and the writing was slightly less shit are actchully evil manbabies scared of change and diversity" all nestled in a festering pile of nu-star-wars level nostalgia references

They are obsessed with continuity in the same way that Alex Kurtzman is obsessed with Star Trek continuity.

Its something he can pick and choose from the proverbial bucket and slap onto the shittest scripts, characters, and concepts known to man and which are 99% of the time just rejected scripts found in a dumpster or shitty fanfiction by a nepotism/diversity hire for another property with its serial numbers filed off and star trek crayon'd on in order to get the Wil Wheaton demographic squealing in artificial glee on social media and get enough "geek media" coverage to keep the producers from looking too closely at actual viewership figures.

The actual use and context is utterly meaningless. Just referencing something in and of itself is all they need to do to get the kind of fawning coverage hit they need, and it doesnt matter at all if they wind up utterly trashing what they bring back and making it unusable going forwards, it doesnt matter if they do it in a way utterly contradictory to everything inherent to what they bring back in the worst ways imaginable. They can use it to reel in the "ill give this shit ONE last chance because its got thing i memba" demographic to pump the numbers and milk it for media attention until dry and desiccated and even official franchise subreddits begin to openly talk about how much of a disappointing shitshow it was.

Oh yeah, there's no way we don't get a strong narrative over how horrible the fans were to allow the last few seasons to fail so hard. I expect the usual elite media double and triple down on the "message" at the very least. I mean we are already getting it with the actor and new troon friend in a way.

Honestly the problem isnt that Grade tried canceling Doctor Who but JNT let the show deteriorate to the point of being canceled
The whole of Season 23/24 of Who is the real reason it was canceled just urgh

Yeah I mean I love John Hurt, would love to have him in Dr. Who... but dang if they couldn't work out having Eccelston in the 50th special, then they should have let McGann come in and let the special be his glorious exit and regen story.

Word is JNT really wanted to leave the show long before then but they wouldn't let him.
