It was ok. They mostly ignored that the bus boycott was planned, but other than that, it wasn't a bad episode. (I understand the whole "it has to be on this day like this" argument, but they still portrayed it as a spontaneous decision.) I'd like to see more of Stormcage guy as a recurring villain, as I think there's some space to build up an interesting backstory there.

Yeah... the weakest episode so far. Some nice character moments, but not much else. It was basically Doctor Who does Eight-Legged Freaks. Although I did like how they addressed the scientific issue with having giant spiders. Also, seeing the spiders scuttling along to rap music made me chuckle.

I actually liked that they lampshaded the Trump thing by making you think the villain is a Trump stand-in, but then revealing that Trump's still a thing in this universe and this guy's planning to run against him and actually hates his guts . I don't really have a problem with taking the piss out of politicians considering they literally turned Obama into the Master back in 2009, although the Trump line in "World Enough and Time" made me roll my eyes because it was so forced.

Trouble was, the villain was just a stupid cartoon character - no-one is that much of a relentless douchebag. I also can't help but feel that every time Doctor Who has giant spiders now is a missed opportunity to bring back the Eight Legs from "Planet of the Spiders". But considering what happened last time that happened ("The Eight Truths"/"World Wide Web") maybe that's for the best.

Hopefully next week is better.

We need more episodes exposing the evil of Buddhism through giant spiders.

Ok, this is officially the dumbest fucking Doctor of all time, and a damn hypocrite to boot. No you retard, starving to death/dying by painful suffocation is not a "more humane" death than a bullet between the eyes. There's a reason that Old Yeller didn't get shoved into a room for weeks to starve or suffocate to death. This was not a good episode and a small incoherent rant is incoming.

-Probably my biggest complaint: Unless I missed it, they didn't even make so much as nod to Pertwee's final serial, "Planet of the Spiders," seems like a gross oversight considering the common theme of oversized spiders. I had taken it as a given that the eight legs would have at least gotten a *mention* (even if they weren't actually the actual culprit, as they indeed were not.) You'd think the Doctor would at least remember an adventure where they died when a similar instance came up... Shitty writing, so I guess not.
-The "Muh Drumph" allegory dude was funnier than it was cringe, mainly because of how fail it was. They blatantly acknowledged the dude "hated Trump", so he was by default more a Mark Cuban ripoff than a Trump ripoff if you really think about it. I doubt it was intended that way, but I chalk it up to dumbass brits not understanding that a Republican "even worse" than Drumph isn't going to be challenging him in 2020.
-This Doctor continues to piss me off in ways I hadn't even realized were possible. Jesus Christ, what a hypocrite, and overtly wrong to boot. "Do things the exact arbitrary way I want, even when I am clearly wrong". Seriously, fuck you bitch.
-Speaking of bitches, Yaz's mom is surprisingly an even bigger bitch than she is, it almost makes it hard to fault her for being as insufferable as she has been so far. (I still do though)
-Ryan's idea to lure out the spiders with fucking terrible music made me laugh, as did Graham's quip about it. It's safe to say I actively like both of these characters now.
-I don't think Graham's thing with his memories of his dead wife had the correct impact on me, really it just made me even more glad she was gone. I actually laughed when she started bleating out obvious shit that even Graham himself said he already knew. It's implied that this exchange is all in his head (unless it's a setup for something else entirely) So I can only assume she pulled that shit when he was alive. Jeez, what a lucky guy to escape that.
-I get it Brits, you hate guns... But if you really want to make episodes that prove your point that "guns are bad m'kay?" at least prove that point. They would have *obviously* been the cleanest solution to this problem here, (And they would have been the obvious solution in episode 2 if the episode wasn't explicitly written to say that a fucking EXPLOSION was better than a gun... Fuck you brits.)
I didn't care for this episode.

I think the reason why 13 doesn’t like guns is because she’s still reeling from all of the violence she’s gone through—hell 12 was in a prolonged battle against Cybermen which resulted in his regeneration. As well he told her to be kind. Maybe 13 wants to atone for all the violence she went through. Or maybe she doesn’t want to corrupt her companions and create another Clara monster.

I think eventually though she will pick up a gun again.

I wonder if last nights episode was a jab at Democrats who hate Trump while acting exactly like him. I really don't know if that was what the writers were intending.

Also I hope they're going somewhere with the anti gun theme because even 10 wasn't this bad.

It's been a while since I saw "The Doctor Falls", mostly because I just want to forget that entire series happened, but I just skimmed through it. (By the way, did you realize that Bill was a lesbian? Because I had forgotten until she mentioned it about three times unsolicited in this episode alone. lol)

Anyway, what you are saying would actually be pretty decent character development, except 12 never used a gun throughout that battle, and even explicitly said he didn't like guns. (Unlike 13 though, he allowed others, including Nardole to use them.) He did however use a shit ton of explosions, even had a child throw a grenade at the Cybermen at one point, which seems out of character in retrospect. Seeing as how one of the ways 13 has saved the day so far has included an explosion, I don't think she was changed by the battle. She just seems to be retardedly anti-gun for some reason.

The Doctor's always been kind though. (and always made various degrees of lip service about being anti-gun for that matter)
This would be an interesting direction to take the character to be sure, but this Doctor still seems to be perfectly ok with violence as long as it's on *her* terms. Remember when she bitched at the guy who kicked the toothfairy off the bridge, and then had no problem exploding the rape sheets in the very next episode.

Or maybe she doesn’t want to corrupt her companions and create another Clara monster.
Was Clara a monster? I just thought she was a terrible character. Regardless, I can't think of any way her "corruption" was caused by guns.

TBH, the "now all guns are bad always, and nobody is allowed to use them in my presence" bullshit just seems like a personal hangup Chibby has with them. I almost want River or Captain Jack to come back just to see this doctor try to chastise them over the guns they've always used.

I had this same thought. I actually thought it was a pretty smart way of handling things and was something the episode did right (even though the character himself sucked). Effectively it's Schrodinger's political joke - if you hate Trump you can laugh at the fact that guy's worse than Trump. If you like Trump you can imagine he's a crazy Democrat.

I'm also not ruling out the fact Chris Chibnall might've been poking fun at the way some people visualise Trump with that character, but maybe I'm giving him too much credit.

You're definitely giving him too much credit.

As I said earlier, I wasn't at all bothered by the obviously Drumph analogue dude in this episode for similar reasons to you guys even.. (Not the least of which, in the real world, this dude would literally need to be a Democrat to stand any real chance of opposing Trump in 2020), but what you and several others have attributed to *intentional* satire, my gut's still saying was just incompetence.

I felt the message here was convoluted. Most people kill spiders on sight. Why would anyone feel bad just because the spiders here are bigger?
I felt bad for the big spider, but when 30% of the population's response to these things is"kill it with fire", I don't think shooting the massive man-eating spider with a gun really gets across the anti-gun message they want.
I also laughed at how hippie the plan was. We're not going to use guns... we'll use essential oils!
The spiders bobbing down the hallway to rap music was very cute. I hope not-Trump comes back as a character, like Harriet Jones.
If the BBC had any balls, they'd do an episode with the newly elected not-Trump president.. in 2024. But they don't and they won't.

Hey at least they’re using essential oils for something productive and not a pyramid scheme. Although a pyramid scheme would make a great villain.

Whether it was intentional or not the i hate trump bit was hilarious and my favorite bit of the episode.
And at least as far as my experience as a brit i dont think the anti-gun thing is very relatable to most people, like i dont think most people would want to shoot a gun but i dont think people are offended by them the way the episode portrays.
Also as far as i know most spiders dont actually kill the prey they catch preffering to eat paralyze them and keep them alive until they are hungry so at least kevin would probably be alive.
I think the more humane thing is mostly bullshit but you would probably find more people willing to put a glass over a spider and to let it suffocate than to physically cause their death by stamping on them or whatever. And that while it would cause more suffering for the spiders the distance from the killing would make it affect the people less and is more humane in that way.
"The psychological toll this takes on a person cannot be underestimated. Slaughterhouse work has been linked to a variety of disorders, including PTSD and the lesser-known PITS (perpetration-induced traumatic stress). It has also been connected to an increase in crime rates, including higher incidents of domestic abuse, as well as alcohol and drug abuse."
Thats a contrived answer and not what the episode is trying to show but its here anyway.

Have it be a literal pyramid with a scheme, and tie it back to ancient egypt somehow and we have ourselves a wacky adventure gang.

hmmm sounds like the BBC is virtually a sort of propaganda arm of the government now. Is there a brexit themed doctor episode yet?
Forget infotainment, we've now got propotainment? propogandainment? bleh.

Ya done fucked it up Chibby.

I heard rumours he was trying for a new years episode, but after Moffatt secures a lucrative spot for you that's become associated with the show, isn't it a bit dumb to throw that away?

(One of the few times I have something good to say about Moffatt
Didn't Moffat only do the last special because Chibnall didn't want to do one and the BBC says "if you skip one we'll stop doing it" because of budget issues or some shit? I'm not surprised to hear this.
