So, I've always had this question, but how come they never did a companion that wasn't from modern day? Like maybe a girl from ancient greece or rome, or medieval france, or germany or even medieval england, etc.

At one point they cockteased us with the lesbian viking chick and that french prostitute but they didn't go through with it.

I get that the doctor is (or rather used) to be there for men to self insert and women to fawn over and the companion used to be there for women to self insert, but men don't have trouble empthaising with a time traveling alien shapeshifter from the future, would it really kill the female audience that much to self insert to a farmgirl from the past or something?

They already did that back in the classic series multiple times with companions from the past and future and alien companions

IIRC they did that with Katrina. Then killed her off in the next serial because it would be too much of a pain in the ass to have to explain stuff to her and thought a past companion would be boring to the audience. They wouldn't try again until Leela. While she was a primitive she wasn't from the past per se. She was a descendant of the survey team of some sort of space mission that ended up stranded on some planet due to the Doctor's meddling. Almost all of the Doctor's companions have been present day humanoids or humanoid aliens.

There was also Victoria but she was pretty useless and screamed all the time.

You're forgetting Jamie the Scottish highlander who was companion with Zoe, a girl from the future who was part of a space station crew

What? Victoria was ace. She was from the Victorian era and her interplay with Jamie who was an uncouth Scottish highlander was one of my favourite dynamics.

The scene is a moonbase in the 22nd Century.
Jamie: "Victoria - did you see what them wimmin were wearing?"
Victoria: "Yes, Jamie. I did!"
Jamie: "Do you ever think maybe yourself might be wearing something like that?"
Victoria: "No, Jamie. I do not."

I also enjoyed the way all three of them played off each other with the 2nd Doctor and Victoria both being quite intellectual and Jamie being... less so.

Leela of the Sevateem (Survey Team) has been mentioned. Always fun but especially so when the Doctor takes her to England.

Bless Professor Lightfoot for eating the same way she does out of politeness.

There was also Zoe who was popular for... reasons.

I think an early Waifu for many guys.

Clara who was first introduced in the Christmas special The Snowmen was supposed to be an historical companion but it was changed so that she was from modern day and then that endless reincarnation thing they went with. For some reason NuWho has a strong aversion to out of time companions. I don't know why but I could guess. Captain Jack being a technical exception but as a time traveller himself who was familiar with the times he visited, doesn't really count in the same way others did.

Dude was a total chad too.

My only memories of Doctor Who are from late 80s/early 90s YTV. Daleks were creepy.
I bet you remember that scene where a woman's dead father was being turned into a Dalek. Begging her to kill him as his voice became ever more shrill and Dalek-like. Scary stuff.

Tried to find it on YouTube but BBC are pretty aggressive about killing unapproved clips.

I do remember something horrific with the voices and thinking they're supposed to be tiny germophobe aliens in their versions of mech. 80s YTV was great. Camp Caribou, Transformers, and nightmare inducing broomcloset scifi from bonglund!

Because he was a dood. Screened out by the perception filter. He and the 2nd Doctor definitely spitroasted every female companion.

What? Victoria was ace.
Hard disagree. I almost went deaf listening to that bitch. When I went through that era most of her episodes were missing and the only thing available was a soundtrack so there was no eye candy bonus to balance out her screaming.

Leela was always my favourite companion.
Very disappointing nudes.

Eh. Can't have been worse than Mel. Am I watching Doctor Who or am I sitting in the dentist's chair?
