One of the worst things of the show dropping in quality and becoming a zombie that will never die despite the shit ratings and reviews is the fallout of the merch. No I don't mean Funkopop coffee mug consumer shit I mean actually cool merch like those detailed 5 inch collectible figures that one company's been making since the show came back. They went from stocking them everywhere globally during the 9/10/11 era to half assing them for a bit during capaldi's run by upscaling the sculpts of the 3 inch ones they tried doing for a bit, to current year post chibnall takeover where they're all exclusive to one singular UK retailer (B&M) and hawked by scalpers aiming to sell them on ebay for 75-100 US dollars with 30 dollar shipping. I wouldn't think doctor who shit would have a market anymore but no apparently shit's is still popular enough to the point I've seen people complain about it online after finding out they actually never stopped making the figures.

It'd be fine to me if it was just the stupid shit nobody wants but they've been reissuing some older sets and making new classic who figures. For a while like right around early lockdown times they had some deal where the sets were available on online US retailers like amazon for the USD equivalent of their MSRP IIRC but that's clearly not a thing anymore because it's now only third party sellers doing the same fucking shit as the ebay ones are doing. So basically the US and every other country and store even in the fucking UK just gets fucking loaded with 13th doctor timeless child funkopop ass shit merch wise but the shit people actually want is somewhat hard to get.
Every day since I found out about this nightmare people live I'm glad I got a slightly beat up version of that 2008 classic dalek figure set from a charity sale thing for $3 a few years ago. Think it might've been pre-Jodie doctor by a few months too actually lmao.

EDIT CAUSE I FORGOT TO MENTION THIS SHIT: The company that makes the figures always had an issue with "too many exclusives" but it was all different online retailers and SDCC back n the day, not a singular point for every single figure.
Want the official Antony Ainsley master figure? IT WAS A FUCKNG SAN DIEGO COMIC CON EXCLUSIVE FROM A 2 PACK AND YOU WILL NEVER SEE IT RELEASED AGAIN BECAUSE OF THAT. Somehow despite this, the same year I got those Daleks mentioned there was a guy selling a used one at some convention for $20 meaning I have it.

It is time....

i think whats funny is they had a 6-inch line, downgraded to 3-inch, then went back to 5-inch. essentially meaning that if you collected since 2005 thats all forfeit. glad the show's merchandising is essentially dead

it was actually 5 inch initially, they started cutting back the 5 inch line to a select few online retailer exclusive deals while everywhere else got the more cheaply made 3 inch stuff during late Matt Smith/early Peter Capaldi, then they brought 5 inch back a bit for later capaldi (though with retailer/online exclusive variants and the scale name changed to "5.5 inch" and never went back to the 3 inch stuff.

I actually got one of the more recent 5 inch figures a while back that was the reissue of the previously $20 SDCC exclusive and later online $50 figure pack exclusive of the Imperial Dalek in a $25 dollar 2 pack with a dfferent character. Problem is they damaged or lost the mold for the imperial dalek's slats so they used the revised renegade ones with the mesh instead. Surprised the figures are still more or less the same quality as they were over a decade ago save for some weird stuff like that. Not paying over 100 just to have accurate slats fuck that shit.

ah i see. thats interesting. actually my aunt said she saw doctor whos in b&m and i have no intention of collecting unless it's just to get a capaldi and war doctor i never had as a kid but i checked and there's only seven options for merch which is embarassing but what i noticed is for the 9th doctor set they just used two of the same ninth doctor mold but painted the other one "holographic" and reused the rose tyler from 2005 with the weird articulation. then i swear for the tenth doctor they just used matt smith's raggedy figure but stuck tennant's head on it. they must be really hurting for money!

Examples: https://merchandise.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/bm-2022-10th-doctor-figure-set/, https://merchandise.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/doctor-who-bm-the-ninth-doctor-collector-set/

Also some of the sets seem to have weird faces (must be the ones upscaled from 3" molds) or have spots for screwdrivers but dont come with them. Back in the day /who/ used to say "Doctor Who will never get cancelled because merchandise is too lucrative". I think Chibnall has killed that safety net for them and hence why theyve went back to playing it almost pathetically safe

Anything from the Capaldi era's upscaled 3 inch figure face sculpts, the other jank headsculpts are just probably due to different people doing those. The screwdriver thing and parts reusage is just something that's always been a weird thing going on with the figures since Day 1. That Athony Ainley master figure I mentioned that only ever came out in a one time only convention exclusive back when they were first doing classic who figures? Isn't his normal full black outfit but a suit and tie. He DID wear an outfit like that at one point but that's not why it's like that. It's like that because they could just go and reuse the John Simm master body for him which causes some other weird things like him having a ring on his finger he never had.

SO happy Dr Who MTG release day all!

Picking my pre-order up Sunday. First store I hit today had the 9-11 doctors deck at $80, all other decks at $60. (FYI for the ignorant, normally the magic decks sold are around $40, with some of the cheapest around $35.

I picked up a collector's pack just to see what I could get. I got 2 "Eleventh Doctor" in the pack - (1 regular foil, the other the fancy TARDIS frame.) Then I got a whopping EIGHT lands. That's over half the pack. Yes you are guaranteed to get 1 foil basic "tardis" land in the pack but dang! And 2 of them were both the same land - extended art, one regular and the other foil.

Ugh, and the tardis version of Yasmin. I feel like WotC should pay me for the pack after that.

Finally for those curious, current pricing looks like Tenth Doctors are at the top of the heap with his Master version.

I miss when card starter decks were $9-12 back in the 2000s, no way I'd be able to get into card games in current year with those fucking nightmare prices.

To be slightly fair, those were 60 card starters back in the day, the decks I were talking about are 100 card decks. (don't even get me started on that) But then even those games/products running around 60 cards will be pushing $20.

But yeah, I remember those days too. Heck I remember once finding a bunch of starters for a game I played at Toys R Us on sale for $7 each and thinking I hit the jackpot.

c'mon man! At least let him pose like he's got a set of testicles. If this Doctor showed up to offer me an adventure in time and space I'd call Chris Hansen to come save me

He's trying to do the Jon Pertwee pose thing that Capaldi brought back but he's not doing the signature stern expression so it ends up looking like an album cover for some early 2000s era music artist lmao.

Just when you think Dr. Who can't get any gayer...

Of course the troon worked on the set itself.

Still, I wish that Teferi guy (the one playing the master deck) was playing the new doctor more than the fella we got.
