Also, Gwen Cooper is possibly even worse than Rose Tyler as far as being a horrible person that the show praises at every chance while ignoring her many flaws.

Iirc, at one point she cheats on her boyfriend with Jack and then later feels guilty about it. When she tells him, the boyfriend isn't ok with it and wants to break up with her over her infidelity. Since she doesn't want to accept the consequences of her actions, she deletes his memory using a mcguffin. They eventually end up getting married without him remembering that she cheated on him and that he wanted to break up with her over it. A classic case of "imagine if the genders were reversed", and just utter trash. I consider what she did to him to be rape.

That's a common theory amongst the show's fan base since day one of the revival. Especially since Tyler is a common surname in RTD's works and often the last name for his various self-inserts in his works

I can. Cause he nuked his entire race to save everyone else. But it takes him like 7 series to get over that and we still see that he can absolutely spiral especially if the people grounding him are not there. And we see all of it. And not even the 50th retconning heals all of it.

With Jack the last thing we see in Children is him running away because he can’t deal with what happened and then the next time we see him everything is fine.

And then Miracle Day tanks the franchise so no one ever really gets to address the ‘oh fucking god, fuck that just happened’ issues they all have.

I tried to to give Torchwood a chance a while ago. Unfortunately, the first one I decided to watch was an episode where a man who eats people is easily forgiven because he says it made him happy. It was so horrid that I didn’t even bother with the rest of the show.

Logically you would work it out based on the same proportions of shared DNA as in agreed cases. So sibling DNA = 50% (in average case) which would be the same as parent child (technically slightly more than father-son, actually. Grandparent or Uncle / Aunt are at 25%, still considered incest. First cousin would be 12.5% which is the same as a great grandchild. Marrying a first cousin isn't historically considered as incest though it can be bad if done habitually (see Bradford in the UK). So at minimum, the time traveller would have to skip forward to when their great-grandchild were mature in order to be equivalent to first cousins. Second cousin is down to around 3% which is equivalent to Great Great Great Grandchild.

Honestly though any amount of direct line descent is going to look suspect but on purely scientific grounds, dating your great, great, great grandchild would be below the normal threshold for incest in modern social USA norms, with great grandchild being the boundary for more historical societies or the Third World.

I've answered more on the grounds of social definitions than avoiding birth defects. Modern society tends to be a little overzealous. First cousin marriage isn't bad in itself and in fact due to something called the Founder's Effect can actually be a positive in establishing beneficial mutations (esp. the immune system). But becomes a serious problem when it goes from being a random it-happens thing to being socially desirable such as in Pakistani communities where it helps keep the wealth in the family. At that point birth defects start to soar. So to avoid inbreeding it's less about how far and more about how often. Like if you time travelled forward and had a child with your great grandchild, that in itself is a barely measurable statistical blip in terms of birth defects. But if you were to do it every four generations time after time after time, you'd be damaging your family line.

Generally the prohibitions against incest and our natural tendency to be unattracted to someone we grew up with is not because of the danger of isolated cases - even siblings don't have a particularly high risk of resulting birth defects - but because it's bad as a general practice. So your time traveller should probably wait five or more generations and then spread out a bit and avoid keeping to the same line of descent, varying which branches of the family tree he or she dallies with widely.

I hope that is useful if you ever discover time travel and feel excessively randy.
