A buddy pointed out to me that step-granddad said that there was no such thing as aliens.

:story:

This is one of the things that I (tbh) drunkenly sperged about the other night. (Don't blame you at all if you didn't see it.)

Yeah the step-grandfather dude is moronic for not believing in aliens at this point.
The Indian cop chick was even more frustrating though because she never even once called in for backup (even though it totally would have been helpful more than once). Because the Doctor... frankly gaslighted her into "who would believe you"?
I can count at least a half dozen OPEN alien invasions in this universe in the past decade alone.. Alien invasions at Christmas was even a running joke during the RTD era... Maybe *most people* would believe you?

EDIT:
Matt Smith hit a massive reset clock during his run. It's covered when he talks to Amy Pond. I think he lists quite a few events and she shrugs at him.
That pissed me off too, but it wasn't as overt. It could be explained away as Amy wasn't very aware of world events.

It was a pretty ok episode which did what it needed to do by not fucking up horribly.

Wasn't that big on Walsh, but he wasn't really given much to work with, but the others were ok I guess. I liked crane guy.

Bit of a rant incoming.

First episode had way too much exposition. Instead of delivering the character moments that would endear us to the new companions, you get interactions like:

Bland Guy: Do I know you?
Bland Girl: No.
Bland Guy: Did you go to school with me.
Bland Girl: Yes I did.
Bland Guy: You have grown since I had known you as a child.
Bland Girl: You too have grown since I had known you as a child.
Bland Guy: We have both grown. I have a disease that causes me to occasionally add tension to dramatic situations.
Bland Girl: And I am now a cop.
Bland Guy: My mother married my step-father. He is her second husband.
Bland Girl: Your step-father is your mother's second husband.
Step Father: I am his mother's second husband.
Mother: He is my second husband.

All the characters were basically wallpaper except the father. He was a stencil. The Doctor's outfit makes her look like a public access children's entertainer. And, of course, the Doctor defused all tension in the plot off-screen (defusing the bombs) because why write good stories when you can replicate Moffat's constant asspulls?

The Eleventh Hour set a high bar for Doctor Who showrunners to jump in how to introduce the tone of your run and the new cast in a single episode. This episode didn't manage to beat The Eleventh Hour, not by a long shot. It felt like one of the duller Moffat episodes and not the start of something new and exciting. I'll give it one more episode, but I don't think its going to win me over.

(Speaking of GB after all the horror stories I've heard about the place is it potentially thread worthy?)
Urgh, that place.
I've been banned from there multiple times. They tolerate me as long as I only post in the Dr Who/general media bits, but if I post in the Crater of Needles ('serious' debates section), especially expressing right wing views, down comes the ban hammer!

I think the point of that was to introduce the cracks subplot (ex. the cracks erasing events from history and shit) while low-key wiping the slate clean.

Alright, I'll give you that, but I mean... There's been other overt alien invasions since then that weren't wiped away. Just off the top of my head, those stupid alien cubes.

Then again, that was just a one-off written by some random dude...

oooohhh... Nevermind.

Chibnall is also the reason we got UNIT back in such a good, big way for that time period.

He's better at being given time to let his stories run and it shows in things like Broadchurch and Law and Order UK. Heck he made a 6 hour murder plot one of the most compelling tv stories in a good decade or more.

I think you missed my point. Chibnall himself wrote an episode with an overt alien invasion (one which I believe had a body count... could be wrong about that though). You'd think he'd remember that in a later episode, and not have everyone be all "what aliens?"

I guess Sheffield was roo dumb to notice multiple alien invasions?

IDK, I thought it was good for a new Doctor ep. Better than fucking Deep Breath, more like Deep Whiff.

I didn't hate the first episode. But I am also not paying for it regardless.

I've been so busy with other stuff that I didn't even realize that Ravenous 2 was out. From the synopsis alone, it seems like it's going to be pretty wacky.

I pre-ordered it so it plopped into my downloads a couple of days ago, but I’m waiting for the CD to get here before I listen to it. That’s the other downside about Big Finish aside from the expense - their stuff can take a while to arrive.

I've never bothered with the cds. I'd inevitably just scratch them anyway

Finally watched the new episode and asspulls apart and virtual signaling (i mean look at all the cast in the end of the episode) is was ok, but i think the new doctor is for some reason trying very hard to be Tennant, i mean the tongue joke looked like something he would do
