Medical professionals say the rise in the numbers of anxious children is due to a mix of shifting parental attitudes, a lack of access to psychologists and a youth culture where teenagers’ vernacular brims with psychiatric and mental health terms.
Professor Ian Hickie says children have acquired psychological vocabulary without really understanding the concepts.
Prescriptions for drugs to treat anxiety and depression issued to children and adolescents in NSW more than doubled in ten years from 13,000 in 2012 to 29,228 last year, according to Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme data.
The sharpest increase occurred between 2021 and last year when prescriptions rose by one third to 29,228. Nationally prescriptions jumped 40 per cent between 2021 and last year to 108,670.
These increases included medications where at least one indication is for the treatment of an anxiety or a panic disorder such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs); benzodiazepines; non-SSRI antidepressants; and hydroxyzine. These drugs are also anti-depressants. Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine.

Health Minister Mark Butler in June 2022 ordered the federal health department to launch a review of antidepressant prescribing behaviours by GPs and has received the report but its findings have not yet been published.
Psychiatrist and co-director of the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre Professor Ian Hickie said the rise mirrored a global trend of increasing rates of anxiety in adolescents before the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for those in the 12 to 15-year-old age bracket.
However, he said the growth in pharmaceutical treatments in Australia was in part due to the lack of access to psychologists.
“Most people would suggest trying psychological approaches first, but that assumes you can access those things – the waiting lists are horrendous,” Hickie said.
While the underlying cause of anxiety around the world was often believed to be smartphones or technology, he said he believed the cause was more basic.
“The one I am more convinced of is social disconnection– young people not having experiences in the wider world to help that anxiety,” he said.
“Children should be moving outside of their families, places where their parents don’t just keep them safe to get the experiences and the skills to cope with the anxiety about the wider world.”
Another complicating factor parents faced was that children now could converse in the language of mental health.
“Most kids have acquired a much more psychological vocabulary without understanding what those terms mean,” Hickie said.

Some have blamed falling attendance levels in school on school refusal– which experts have said can stem from an anxiety about leaving the home triggered by a combination of social, emotional, behavioural and academic problems.
A 2017 report recommended increasing the number of school counsellors in the state’s school so there is one for every 500 student. Before the election Labor pledged funding for an extra 250 counsellors in the states schools.
Secondary Principals’ Council Craig Petersen said more students had anxiety but there was a shortage of counsellors in schools because they could make more money in private practice.
“We just can’t pay what a psychologist in private practice can earn,” he said.
He wanted students to have access to a professional who can provide a diagnosis but said schools were also having discussions which reframed feelings like sadness.
“A growing generation of young people are lacking resilience, it is one of the conversations we have with parents and students, saying ‘it is normal to have days when you’re feeling low;
being perpetually happy is not normal’,” he said.
Clinical psychologist Judith Locke said children and adolescents growing up today had a greater tendency to pathologise their feelings with the language of mental health and parents were more receptive to that.
“I think there’s a normalisation of terms and then there’s concept creep-- with words like trauma used in ways which are not genuinely traumatic,” Locke said.
“With the best of intentions, parents catastrophise normal nerves and talk about those feelings in a way that makes a child feel like their feelings are unusual.”
NSW Mental Health Minister Rose Jackson said the mental health of young people was a serious issue.
“We know the data shows have seen more young people struggling with poor mental health and addressing this challenge represents a major priority of this government,” she said

All of this drag queen story hour and similar bullshit is intentionally designed to be as provocative as possible. The goal is to force you to make one of two bad moves: Either you let them get away with it, in which case you have demoralized yourself, submitted to a Maoist struggle session and let them groom your kids, or you push back, at which point they cry about how oppressed they are and how you're anti-LGBTQETC. Heads I win, tails you lose.
The goal of this tactic is to do just enough where the law should intervene but won't, to prevent "escalation," then wait for their provocation to erupt in predictable frustration and outbursts that the law will then intervene upon and which will be filmed and used as propaganda. Of course, it also helps that friendly district attorneys enable this sort of behavior by looking the other way when they should intervene.
The ultimate goal of drag queen story hour is Drag Floyd. They want someone to go too far. They want one of these drag queens to get martyred, because they will then hold up that martyr as proof that they are oppressed, they are marginalized, they are victims, that anti-LGBTQ hate has reached violent proportions through stochastic terrorism online by people like Kiwi Farms, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Elon Musk, and we need to bring in the force of the law to protect them, and there will be huge lawsuits.
I guarantee that the day is coming when someone gets pushed too far and shoots a drag queen, justified or no, and #DragFloyd will trend on Twitter, the drag queen will rest in state in a gold coffin, woke politicians and influencers will cry in front of cameras, Antifa will riot in every city on the west coast, and thousands of gullible dupes will empty their bank accounts into the hands of grifters. It will be the summer of 2020 all over again.

Plausible, and certainly chilling.
But remember, even the lowest scumbag criminal black dude has a mama and a string of baby mamas (and thus kids) and, in short, a family. However broken, however scattered, however fatherless, a family that still closely enough resembles what we all understand a family to be that it evokes a "that could be my son, that could be my brother" response from well meaning empathizers.
Drag scum has no such thing. By and large they have alienated their parents and their siblings. They have no permanent romantic attachment. They have no offspring except those they destroy through grooming. When they die, it's the more personality disordered and attention whoring members of their "family of choice" who run to the cameras. They quickly skitter back into the various rocks and crevices they emerged from.
I've seen this pattern play out with a few "trans martyrs." The family is quiet. The friends screech loudly for justice for five minutes then go back to fucking around and doing drugs. There's a big flash and boom in the press, and then silence.
They may want a Drag Floyd but I sincerely doubt they will be able to make one happen.
