If his test was anything like the one in my dinky Florida town, it wouldn't surprise me. You just had to pass a written test for your permit, and then could take the road test after a year. Parallel parking wasn't even on our road test, and you were only on the highway for maybe 10 seconds after leaving the DMV before turning onto a nearly-deserted side-street to do 3-point-turns and sudden stops and such. You could pass it by sheer stupid luck and only really had to focus on driving for like ten minutes, then the test was over. Even Chris would have trouble screwing it up.

I took driving courses at my high school, which even counted as elective credits. Maybe Chris did that same thing?

Learner must hold permit for nine months and log 45 supervised driving hours, 15 of which must be at night. Under 18 may not carry more than one minor passenger for the first six months of being licensed and no more than three passengers until reaching age 18. All minors subject to a curfew between midnight to 4:00 a.m. until reaching age 18.

Although maybe because of Chris' tard-ness he didn't get his license until later. And I think if you're older when you get your license they aren't as stringent? Maybe? I don't know.
I as diagnosed with severe panic attacks awhile ago and my doctor recommended that don't drive. I am oer it now but the bus is easier for me sp I never got around to driving. I have no use for driving school.

I do not see why any place would accept Chris though. Thos is the guy that got into an accident thinking about a math problem and tried to run over a game shop owner. :(

Wow, I only had to wait two weeks between passing the written test for a learner's permit and taking the driving test.

That could have something to do with the fact that no one in the Godforsaken state knows how to drive.

I have a feeling Bob was the one who encouraged Chris to learn how to drive, seeing as how he attempted (if poorly) for Chris to have at least a semi-normal life prior to giving up and getting him the tugboat. Perhaps also the DMV went easier on him than they should have (for some reason) because of the autism card? I don't know, maybe things were less strict in Virginia early last decade.

And I too am surprised his license wasn't suspended due to the October 28th incident. He got away with a lot more than a neurotypical would have in the same incident, I bet.

A Neurotypical would still be in jail, so I suppose so.

Meanwhile Chris screams that his Autism makes him opressed.

At the very least he got away with calling Snyder a thieving liar right to the judge! That is one very lenient (at least to the mentally disabled) judge.

A traffic offense wasn't filed. If he were arrested for speeding, unpaid tickets, DUI, reckless driving -- sure. But he wasn't charged with a moving violation, and it happened in a parking lot, not on the street. Even leaving the scene of an accident doesn't earn you a traffic ticket, but rather a criminal arrest. What he did isn't something the DMV concerns themselves with, much.

That said, if the DA had wanted to, they could have fucked with his license, but as the story has shown, they didn't want to mess with him too badly.

Bloody hell, it's sooo different here in the uk.

It's estimated that the average amount of lessons required before taking the practical test is 36. You pay for them individually and the total cost comes to approx £1100 ($1690)

You need to pass a theory test which costs £31 ($48) and a practical test which costs £62 ($95). The practical test isn't easy either, most test centres have a pass rate of less than 50%, so you end up retaking it.

So that's maybe £1255 ($1928) just to acquire a licence over here, ouch!

Don't forget the hazard perception and undirected driving have been added too. All to put us off trying.
