Duke Nukem Forever 2001 Build Discussion

To further explain what went wrong, DNF went through SEVERAL engine changes, from Quake 1 to Quake 2, to finally Unreal. Then, George Brossard looked at all the shit being done at the time and figured "Duke should have that too!".

Only problem was, George would have the actual devs at 3D Realms pretty much disrupt their work for some feature like dynamic lights and stuff. The 2001 build was THIS close to completion, but then George wanted a unique lighting system that totally FUCKED the game. The devs had to redo all the models, maps and everything in between just to make the game run properly. THEN Unreal 2 came out, and...
I believe DNF switching from Quake to Unreal was a smart move. Had Brossard stuck with that '01 vision and added more AFTER release, Duke Nukem could've either lived on OR ended on a swan song.

The theme song was the only remotely good thing about the Gearbox version. Its better than the leaked 2001 version in my opinion. Here's hoping it gets the chance to be applied to a game actually worthy of it this time.

(The 1998 version is better than the 2001 version, but it sounds a lot like the Zero Hour theme to me)

FUCK YEAH! I always wanted to play this.

Though I was under the impression that this version of the game was finished, Gearbox is gay for not finishing it and releasing it themselves, nobody cares about the 2011 version.

Brossard is also a retard for not just finishing and releasing this version, but at least we can (hopefully) play what was done.

If you read it closesly, you'll hear the voice of a man whose big dreams smashed his heart into million pieces
I won't blame him. He's basically done with this because of his own over ambitions, constantly switching engine to engine just so he could make the name Duke Nukem Forever become a magnum opus of 3dRealms. He basically knew he fucked up and there's no going back from this.
I will say this, he's atleast way better than Randy "make a porn subreddit for the Overwatch clone under his e-mail" Pitchford who bragged about owning his old job's ip.

Broussard did it to himself. Sometimes, you need to catch yourself.

There is no real game to play. Just a smattering of barely populated test levels.
Fine by me. The guns sound awesome and the look & feel of the game is on point. I'm excited to try whatever's there at all and I'm hoping a team pieces together a playable campaign on the '01 version.

I don't think he understands. With the source code, compilable source code at that, and the assets that already exist, rabid fans will easily be able to fill in all the gaps that exist and turn it into a real game the community of fans would have killed to have. It's just a matter of time.

I never understand why companies underestimate their fans. Some fans have literally worked for more than a decade on unique IP for games released by various companies. You give the community the tools, and if people love what you make enough, they can make it do literally almost anything given enough time.

I think he's just talking about people who are expecting this, as is, to be better than the release version of Duke Nukem Forever. I don't know how many people, if any, are expecting this to be a complete package though.

This is really exciting, i can't wait to try it.

I think most people are going to be reasonable with their expectations. Everyone knows from similar situations over the years with various dumps that any "dump" comes incomplete, to various degrees, and always needs a certain amount of love. The only extremely rare exception are games that were somehow finished and ready for production but literally canned at the last second because companies like throwing money away (that's literally the only reason I can see for not releasing a finished game that isn't total shit, and if it was total shit, why make a game that is total shit, etc... Getting some money for a finished game has to be better than literally nothing.).

In many ways, a incomplete game is better than a complete one because a complete game means that certain choices are "officially" foreclosed. An incomplete game means the players get the the choice and its just as valid as anything else. I know that doesn't add up to much, but for people that value "head cannon" where what they think happened could be what was intended is worth its weight in gold (even if it only has value for obsessive, neurotic fanboys).

I agree the vast majority of people are expecting something very unfinished.

Star Fox 2 suffered this fate, it was nearly done, and Argonaut Software got shafted hard by Nintendo because of the refusal to allow it to be done.

Definitely. When that prototype of Sonic 2 dropped over 20 years ago, people were going wild speculating on a possible time travel mechanic because of Wood Zone, the purpose of Hidden Palace Zone, and whatever the fuck Genocide City Zone would have been (and that one was just a jumbled mess of pixels). I'm interested in the speculation of what could have been for this one.

To think they could have just released DNF 2001 all the way up to 2004, it would have gotten 6 outta 10s by most gaming sites for antiquated graphics but would have likely been remembered as a decent old school shooter.

Instead we got 360 Consolized crap.
Then, it would be compared to Duke Nukem 3D. I think the graphical effects on board would've gave it an advantage.
