I came upon another article which is a gold mine.
Drag panic
For context, many complaining about drag exhibitions in the presence of children have provided photos and clips showing performers clearly engaging in sexual or quasi-sexual poses and suggestive acts. That is in addition to drag being generally sexually charged in the first place, and there's a good argument it is not age-appropriate even if fairly subdued.
The term "X panic" usually refers to a phenomenon which doesn't exist. For instance, the Satanic panic is so called because there are hardly any Satanists (there are a few weird spergs who claim to worship Satan but they are irrelevant hobbyists). By contrast, Drag Queen Story Hour is very real.
The article includes compulsory references to harassment. It's likely there were a few minor incidents as there would be for any political controversy. I'm sure bakers who wouldn't prepare gay cakes suffered "harassment" as well.
Indeed, on the talk page, when it was proposed to use a more neutral title "Criticism of drag" one editor's rant went further with
threats and, yes,
terrorism:
The article includes obligatory references to "white nationalists" and "neo-Nazis" and other perennial boogeymen.
But, wait, I haven't gotten to the best past. Do you want to know what really kicked off drag panic? Would you believe it was the greatest trauma in history, the January 6 unauthorized Capitol tour?
See, it all ties together!
The article does explain that the "panic" is international. For example,
No details are given as to what makes them extremists. Presumably it's their opposition to child-grooming.
