Well, this is really about the community around the game, but this feels like it belongs in games.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a roguelike RPG that can be played online or downloaded and played offline. It's pretty fun, and some of the development philosophy makes good sense, like trying to minimize tedious boring gameplay (Think pudding farming in nethack).

However, the devs have gotten more and more SJWish over time, and the forum is quite thought policed.

Basically, a troll claims to be muslim, and offended by this sword of jihad artifact. The devs immediately fold and rename it the sword of the zealot. Nevermind that the word zealot has anti-jewish overtones historically...

This is the game design subforum, which usually has the spergiest behavior.

The devs like to randomly change the gender of monsters between revisions for some reason, then get all "Why do you care" when people ask about why it's being done.

There's a user named Minmay AKA Duvessa, a huge asshole with the backing of the administration, because they're kinda sorta maybe trans? Or at least they feel the need to post their sex dreams about themselves and their female elven alter ego. They're a minor lolcow at least.

Anyone else familiar with this place, and want to tell some horror stories of their own? I'd love to hear any dirt people have on Minmay, dpeg, lasty, pleasingfungus, or any of the regular forum dictator devs.

Except for minmay, sword of jihad incident and gender swapping some monsters in one revision there's not really anything cow-worthy in this community.

I had such a good run the other day at work but died in hell like an idiot. Survived getting banished like 3 times pretty early too. I've only ever ascended as a Gargoyle though, feels bad.

DDFi makhleb you can win in about an hour
 
Oh so we're just going to talk about the game? How boring :P

My favorite character to play is a Troll fighter or monk, go okawaru, plow through the early game on pure trollness, use a shield as my main form of defense till I can get dragon armor, then keep rolling. Every time I've managed to find a book with statue form in it sooner or later. Once that happens, I start training earth and transmutation, until statue form is castable. Then I roll the rest of the game, always a good build for a 15 rune win during the tournies. Statue form troll is good fun!

It's fun to play casters, but the game goes so much slower. It's just so easy and simple to play heavy armor&bump attack. O-Tab-tab-tab-O-tab-tab-tab.

Once upon a time I had won all races, but they've added more in the meantime. I haven't won all backgrounds, but who wants to play all those different kinds of elemental mages. Air and earth mages are such shitty starts...

You say that but ibe probably splatted 50 DD of various backgrounds and gods through the versions without making any headway. I know it's an objectively easy race, I just suck lol. I have o-tabitis.
 
Yeah DDs are powerful as hell but they're also annoying to play.

A MiGl is a pretty good all rounder without any terrible drawbacks (No helmet because of horns, but the retaliatory attack is kind of worth it). Good apts for fighty skills, bad bad spellcasting apts. But even with the bad apts you can learn some utility spells like regen easily enough.

Generally, my advice for winning is use the biggest weapon of the type you're training, wear armor that gives the best ac+ev (generally the heaviest available), and train fighting, dodging, weapon skill, and armor. Turn off weapon training when at min-delay, and play like a coward, luring enemies to cleared areas near stairs and kill them 1 by 1 in a hallway. See an enemy at the end of your LOS? Assume he's got an army behind him full of orc priests, wasps, and killer bees. Because the one time he does, you die.

A shield can be worth it, generally I make the decision based on the first great weapon I find. If it's a 2 hander, no shield for me, if it's a one hander, I'll focus training shields until it's even with my other skills.

Teleport scrolls are lifesavers, but you gotta be able to judge when the fight's going bad, because it takes a few turns to kick in. Plus, you might need to teleport again if you land somewhere nearby, or a different bad place. If you find teleport scrolls to be useless, you need to learn to use them earlier.
 
I personally can't win a Minotaur anything for whatever reason. Probably too agressive.

Hill Orc is my go to for any invo god, or straight orc Jesus run
 
Good to know nothing I love is safe from socjus-afflicted autists.
My favorite challenge run is FeWr and my best run recently was a GnMo (feat. Okawaru abuse).
 
I really need to get into this game some more than I already do. I'm too much of an ADOM baby for my mind to process whats happening at times. Killing summoners kills their summons?! What is this!
 
If you really want to piss the devs off equate every single thing to Tolkien. They ALL have some strange hateboner for lotr. It's why high elves and mountain dwarf are dead races instead of merfolk and Minotaur.

I won the Orb maybe 8 or 9 years ago and haven't really played Dungeon Crawl since. Maybe I'll give it some more play, looks like they've really added a bunch.
 
It's funny, really the only time I enjoy playing it any more is to demonstrate how to win with a certain combo to someone else. Although I usually play a bit during the tourneys as well.

They've added a lot, made a lot of things less annoying, exposed a lot more in the UI, and added a fair amount of species and gods. For some reason they also removed high elves, changed ogres into being bad with clubs, and got rid of felid's ability to pounce.

For some really, really weird reason they also renamed sirens to avatars, and renamed mermaids to sirens. You'd think they could have just changed the "problematic" name, but they decided to do it in a more confusing way due to reasons.

So I made a Game Design Discussion thread recently about how I'd like to change the spellcasting mechanics. I made a "rape joke" that wasn't about a rape victim or rapist either (I called Sack of Spiders "Summon Rape Machines") and got gassed. I reposted the same thing with no rape jokes and got banned for, suprise, making a rape joke. I get in contact with the person behind the E-mail the forum gave me on the "You've been banned from this board" page and turns out he's a loser with no authority, but directed me to ##crawl-dev to ask for a refund.

Not realizing it's a trap, I go there and joke about my ban, call it bullshit and say the person behind it is an ass-grabbing fool who should get a slap on the ass so he doesn't fuck up like this again. Keep in mind I never said he should be punished in any form for being too lazy to read a post and breaking his own rules. Turns out it was gammafunk, who was silent the whole time and decided to speak only to announce that he's going to keep the ban 'cause I was a meanie and hurt someone's feefees. I call him and the rest a bunch of fucking children and demand to give me back the post's content as it was a 2hs-reasoning's worth of a wall-of-text that I have in browser cache no more. Some bitch I never heard about either playing or posting on Tavern asks for mod privileges and IP bans me in a split-second after getting them.


The kicker?

There was a zero I won't name, who wagged a finger at me and told to better not assume that the Banman was a he or she or what-the-fuck. After I posted my GD idea on r/dcss shortly after, this gammafunk cock-goblin came as first poster and insulted me kindergarten-style for being 'uncouth', basically. Meaning I was too directly to the point and how dare I don't massage gammafunk's ego before growling to lift the ban so I deserve to be treated like shit and called names on a public forum. Guessing from up/downvotes, Shithead even got his IRC buddies to bias the narrative against me.

Those are the kind of people who run DCSS nowadays. Little Big Men even IP'd me away from Tavern later.

Idiots feel so comfy they care more about taboos and courtesies than making the game better.

All of this over a fantasy roguelike game. Sad!

edit: I'll add my experience with the game. It's one of the best and easiest roguelikes to get into, but I suck at it. Probably because I don't play EZ races like Minotaur or Gargoyle

I'm kinda advertising my playstyle, but try Deep Dwarf Fighter of Makhleb. Choose war axe at start, set Fighting, Axes, Throwing, Armour, Dodging, Shields and Evocations on manual training, once you get Makh train Invocations to 7. Kill anything non-threatening with axe, kill tough things with javelins or Makh's lesser demons, kill really tough things with wands, switch to large shield, GDS and branded broad axe ASAP - that's all it is to it. Very very easy and satisfying when you find a cool artefact armour or weapon before Lair.
 
I used to play this game a lot and tried replaying it recently. I could have sworn there used to be a way to play a pacifist run by just healing shit, but I couldn't figure out how to do it.

I always die in the Orc mines regardless of build anyway.
