It's called a Beholder because it can behold FBI crime statistics.
With most of these changes it just looks like they're trying to get things ready for the D&D movie and TV series. The pandemic caused table top gaming to grow, so now the movie will be many people's first exposure to the game. They're more than likely altering the lore and making shit like Beholders more friendly because there might be a mascot character like a Moogle or Baby Yoda being featured. If that's the case then people are going to want merch and in game stuff to be based around The BeOwOlder.
If it takes off like the transformers movies did I really wouldn't worry. It turned into a boon for the franchise and lead to a ton of stuff being catered towards long established fans.
I'm pretty sure I remember 3rd editions being full of monsters that could be mistaken for someone's fursona, like a bipedal fox with rainbow wings.

I think that's why they've done stuff like troon goblins and orcs to try and "make amends" and appease the right side of history. I recall that some of PA's new staff and the PA forums are also filled to the brim with troons so it seems that they've pardoned them.
Also PA's recent artstyle is about as bad as anything you might expect from an olde tumblr troon.
