I would still be playing this game if Toady was not a retarded faggot, absolutely refusing to make the thing multi-threaded. Anyways, good luck and fortune to everyone involved in this project - let's hope it'll be a story worth of Boatmurdered.

That would be bad enough but then the fatal thing isn't that everyone is dead. It's that everyone is an absolute idiot and are "fighting" an unconscious troll but somehow can't kill it but are locked into "fighting" it anyway, for a month straight.

Have you ever considered your dehydrated dwarves might be drinking that troll's blood

January comes!

and I still need to learn how military actually works

oh no
Totally understandable. The Military screen is a mess, even by the standards of the game. But here's a quick guide to get you started:
1: Head over to the Uniforms screen (n) to design outfits for your squad. Here you can specify what weapons and armor they use. If you layer them in enough layers of armor, you may want to change it to "Replace Clothing" (r). If you're rich in materials such iron, steel, or adamantine, make sure you set the uniform to "Exact Matches" (m)

2: Go back to the Positions screen (p). Here you can assign some dwarves to squads. It should be fairly self explanatory. Keep in mind that if you ever want to create a new squad, you'll have to assign another dwarf to Militia Commander under the Nobles screen. Upon creation of a squad, there should be a pop-up box that asks what uniform you want to assign to the squad.

3: Press (e) to go to the Equipment Tab, then press (U) to go to assign uniforms. Here, you can assign squads to uniforms if they haven't been already, and change them out if need be. Be sure to go over every individual dwarf and select what uniform they should be wearing.

4: Press (V) to go back to View/Customize, or (e) if you have exited the Military Screen. As your dwarves gather equipment, they should have green checkmarks indicating that they have access to the item and it is in their inventory. You can also assign artifact weapons here if you'd like by highlight a dwarf and changing their weapon from this screen.

5: To activate your military, go to the Alerts tab (a), then select Active/Training, then go over to your squads and select which squads should be active during this time. You can also activate burrows from this screen should any emergencies arise and you need your civilian dwarves to hide in your base.

6: If you have archer squads, head to the Ammunition tab (f) to assign them bolts (or arrows if you're an elven treehugger) for use for combat or training. Generally you'd want to assign cheap and replaceable bolts like wood or bone for training and metal bolts for combat.

Those are the basics, at least. Be sure to make ample use of the Wiki should I have accidentally glossed over something, but I hope this helps!

Hey, i want to join in. This would be my first succesion fort and i am not sure how i can handle a fort after 12 turns, but i want to give it a try. I just need to improve my sense for design, as i tend to build forts with either inefficient industry or atrocious defensive flaws, such as a central stairwell that connects the fort to the cavern layer.

Your in! Don’t worry about the 12 turns, it’s not final who goes when so we can sort that out later

Great, thank you!
Meanwhile i am playing a fort of my own, learning some new systems. I still need to learn the ropes of fluid manipulation and the mission system, but basic military training has been achieved (human visitors make good teachers).

I'm slowly getting the hang of everything in this game. So far my dwarves have beaten the crap out of undead birds that draw close to the fort (though thankfully it looks like the place I chose for the fort doesn't cause dead things to rise as zombies) and I'm gonna start making a militia soon. I've also been watching Kruggsmash's videos to sort of get a good idea of what the hell is going on in this game and I have to say that I really like it.

I guess you could probably put me down as a maybe candidate for this Let's Play. I'm not sure if I'm confident enough to handle it yet, but I'd consider giving it a go.

I finished my round. I just have to write my report and hand it over. Actually, things are pretty good. There are magma forges. There are other good things.

I suspect whoever is taking over is going to have fun to deal with though.

Why, that's not an ominous statement in the least!

I have burrows and drawbridges that completely shut off the fortress from the outside world.

Except, as I noticed just before closing out, from above. There's open air.

But what are the odds of flying forgotten beasts or rocs or the like showing up ha ha ha? I'm sure the next guy will be able to close off those vulnerabilities before anything bad happens.

Also there is no water. None. Not on the surface, not under it, not in the first cavern layer. According to the embark screen, there's an aquifer, somewhere. I have been completely unable to find it. It's somewhere in one square of the embark, so if you find it, free water.

I'm putting "how to build roofs" on my to-learn list, I think...

hey, at least this isn't 40d where that meant any dwarf who stubbed thier pinky toe was doomed to die of dehydration in bed. so long as the doctor is decent they should be able to get them in condition to hobble about and seek booze.

We don't even have a hospital. Hospitals are for dwarves who are weak and gay.

I will be unavailable between January 18 and the end of the month, so if it's my turn during that time, I won't be able to take over.
