12th Granite, 144;

Numerous projects to improve this wreck of a fortress are underway. Quick thinking on my part has gotten us with a small supply of booze to keep us from dying of thirst. I've also made a small breach to the aquifer and have ordered the parts necessary to build a well, so we'll have drink even in an emergency and our injured will be able to drink—a certain madness overcomes an injured dwarf and he'll desire water over booze!

Onto the matter of our possessed ranger; I had one of our livestock—a useless ass—slaughtered for its bones.


The ranger was quickly appeased, and he got to work on whatever it is that he's creating.


I must say, this fortress is a mess. I can't find a damn thing anywhere. I'll work on improving the layout, but for now I've simply begun making more workshops in a more concentrated location. I've had enough of my dwarves running through this big maze trying to find the right place; we'll need to keep most of it in one spot.

As a result of my foresight and ability as a leader, the possessed ranger was able to complete his project, allowing him to return to work and saving us from the potential loss of Dwarven lives. The artifact itself is nothing to write home about, but any creation adds to the wealth and reputation of our fortress.

Meanwhile, the former overseer has actively and deliberately attempted to throw a wrench in my plans and stop the improvement of the fortress. He's been throwing these parties and enticing others to join him, keeping them from their work. I'll have to deal with this anarchist eventually, but for now I have more important matters to which I must attend.

I've ordered all the remaining parts from the dead donkey to be used: its meat, its skin, its fat, its teeth, &c. are all potentially useful to us. I've also ordered a crude well to be constructed using the parts I had made, so that we don't all die when our brewers go on a break.

The well is finished. It's hardly ideal; it's rather out of the way and is crude in design, but it'll work as a temporary solution to our thirst problem. At the very least, we'll live.

With this taken care of, I've moved on to the issue of getting the forges set up, powered, and churning. This volcanic mountain in which we're living is rich in natural ores for copper, lead, silver, and nickel, and I will personally see to it that it gets used up, even if I have to have entire mountain torn up in order to do so. Once the copper is smelted, it can be used to forge weapons, armor, ammunition, and traps to defend our borders. Also, we can obtain tin and cassiterite from the caravan in order to make bronze, which is superior. With this in mind, I've made the forges a top priority.

Our new magma forge has allowed us to forge a war hammer made of silver. Hammers are just about the only weapons that silver's good for; swords and axes forged with it are worse than those forged with copper, but silver hammers rank amongst those forged in steel. With this new weapon, I've assigned a peasant to fill the role of hammerer, so that when the anarchists attack, we'll be ready to put them to justice.

Smelting operations themselves have been running smoothly. We're making copper, for our weapons and armor; lead, for our chains; silver, for our hammers; billon, for our specie; and nickel, for trading. The natural fuel-source provided by the volcano will ensure that operations continue smoothly.

Migrants have arrived; they will be made to know who's in charge and will be put to work at once.

The coinage that I had ordered minted earlier this month was finished today.

This specie will serve as our official currency in this fortress—in spirit, anyway; the dwarves here are not used to living on a wage, but they're quite happy to work in exchange for food and a roof over their heads. Thus, the currency will be more of a spiritual sort, representing the wealth of The Party by taking up space in the official vault of El Nuevo Régimen, which I've ordered dug out.

The imperial supply caravan arrived today. It consisted of a small group of wagons guarded by mercenaries, as well as the official liaison to all of the colonies and domains in the empire. I had the dwarves of this fortress carry our many goods to the depot, whilst I met with the broker to discuss trade. We looted Fragg's office looking for the trade agreements, but we couldn't find them, so we asked Fragg himself. He said that there weren't any; I shouldn't be too surprised that he was incapable of any sort of diplomacy.

I then met the liaison in the hallway, and began my chat with him.

We briefly discussed current events—nothing of interest—before moving on to the trade agreements. I requested plenty of cloth, leather, and silk, as well as food and the raw ores necessary to smelt tin and bronze. With that, the liaison gave my the capital's orders and left for his return voyage.

28th Timber, 144;
I look over my overseer's log and see that I have been quite negligent in writing about these past month; busy times leave no time to write. I will try to mend this situation by summarizing all that has happened up to now in one entry.

Trade went well. Our many goods allowed us to buy out the caravan of just about everything that could be useful to us. Thus, we have a large surplus of food and drink to help feed our steadily increasing population. We also have plenty of cloth and leather to make clothes; it won't take long for our clothing to wear out, so we'll need the materials to make more. Unfortunately, the mercantilistic policies of the Dwarven empire require the merchants to sell their goods at a hefty price—i.e. they'll charge far more for their goods than they're actually worth. Thus, the balance of trade between the capital and our outpost is a bit off.

Progress continues on the mining of the raw ores and gems from the side of the volcano. How rich it is in precious metal! I fondly dream that, one day, children will point to a crumbling mountain, stripped of all its ore and covered in holes, with the smoke of many industrious forges coming out of its chimneys; and that child will ask his parents who was responsible for this great feat, and the parents will just point to a well-kept statue of me.

Meanwhile, our jail has finally caught up to the sheriff's demand for chains. When crime strikes, we'll be ready to lock up the perpetrators.

One more season left in this year, and I plan to retire at the end of it. Thus, my most daring reforms must come in these next months.

She's no more than a mere puppet-leader; all the real power rests with the overseer. Still, some form of direct representation is useful to make the masses think that they have more of a voice in politics, so I will allow it. The only problem is that she wants an official mayoral office, and that she'll want her mandates met, but these shouldn't be problems too hard to work around.

The new artifact is finally finished, and I must say that the lass put in a much better effort than the previous creators of artifacts.

The end of my term draws close, and I am wrapping up my work before I leave this fortress in the hands of another. As one of my last acts, I have taken a page out of Fragg's political philosophy—one of the very few good pages—and renamed several of our workers. Thus, their identities are no longer their own, and they are now cogs in a great machine of industry and determination.

We have the beginnings of an army right now. We have copper equipment enough for ten soldiers, with ten leather cloaks and backpacks and ten silver flasks as well, yet we presently only have four soldiers. This can be remedied quickly, yet that will do no good unless we find an enemy for them to train on. It may be necessary to look beneath the earth for such targets.

Today, I chose to step down from my position as overseer of the fortress and retire from my life of public service. When I entered the dining hall to give my farewell address, a small group of dwarves informed me that I really didn't have a choice in the matter and that all overseer terms ended at the end of one year; the sense of humor in these dwarves is astoundingly amusing. In my address, I told the dwarves how proud I was to lead them through the near-fatal hardships imposed upon them by their former dictator, Fragg, and how I was honored to bring them into a new era of industry. Still, I had several points that I wished to tell the dwarves, so that they would be informed when they elected their new overseer.
  1. The fortress is lacking in a strong defense; it will be necessary to improve the strength of the military and to build numerous traps to defend us from those who would do us harm.
  2. A fortress guard will need to be established and led by the captain of the guard.
  3. Our current stockpiling system is unacceptable; it must be reformed.
  4. We must breach the cavern level beneath us, for that will open up a new frontier for mining and for hunting.
  5. It may be necessary to slowly move our fortress to the cavern levels, and for us to live in a geo-front, thus abandoning the current sections of the fortress.
  6. One of our livestock has gone missing; please find its body.

Mod them in as Megabeasts and Semi-Megabeasts. Give them abilities that relate to what makes them Lolcow worthy.

Work excavating my palatial suite goes well. I'm also carving out a small area to serve as an encrusting workshop. After the beaurocratic hassle I know I'll be put through trying to reroute my silver furnishings there and get them encrusted with shinies, I figure it's owed to me. In other news, I've called for a straight shaft to be sunk in search of the colour, and cancelled smelting of all ore but tetrahedrite. We don't need nickel and lead, we need silver and gold.

We hit an expansive cavern deep underground. I thought I saw some shiny colour but it's just orthoclase. Fucking orthoclase >:(. Looks waterlogged. I'm sealing it off and having my dorfs dig around it and continue to sink their exploratory shaft. I should probably ask one of the former overseers if there are any earthwork ducts or passageways that could end up being sealed off by fungal growth now that the spores have entered the fort but eh, I don't want them to think I don't know what I'm doing.

Just smoothing out the walls and floor of my soon-to-be luxury estate. What's that, you say? Engrave the walls? Yes, that sounds lovely.

I know I said I wasn't going work ever or even think about reforming the damn stockpiles, but I decided to do something. This is a quantum dump, the speediest way of clearing rock from your fortress. Along the north wall, a minecart track. The single square to the east is a stockpile. In the southwest corner, a six-tile stone stockpile with six wheelbarrows assigned. Up to six dwarves at a time can be fetching stones. They'll load them into the minecart, and shunt all that rock into the single tile in the corner. Far less micro-managey than dump designating and far more compact than creating gigantic stone stockpiles.

Understanding my lust for the colour, Asob Trumpetphantoms has made me a quaffing stein out of a gigantic yellow zircon to appease my temper. It's still not gold, but I'm fairly appeased. I appoint him captain of the guard, despite him having no clear qualifications and that job already being filled by Tun Fishydwarf or something like that (you're fired, previous captain of the guard. Maybe go make me a cup made out of jewels and see if that helps). Tun is ignominiously removed from office and stripped of all holdings and titles associated with it. I've ordered the digging out of a private swimming pool, which will be cleverly heated by the forge magmaducts on the level underneath. Dorfnastia, truly you're the greatest overseer ever. I also set up a specialised mason shop and stockpile to cut marble blocks to line it with. Sure, future overseers might desperately need that marble for flux, but fuck 'em. I want a marble pool.

Well, the good times couldn't last forever. As far as I know, we have no army, no defences and our drawbridge may or may not be giantproof. I hastily designate the interior as a burrow and call everyone in, but there were plenty of dorves out collecting wood and hunting wild horses, and Mr. Giant's making a beeline for the entrance. It doesn't look like everyone's gonna make it back. However, the mountainhomes envoy is sitting right at the gate. Let's hope they can handle a giant, and the diplomatic hit for getting half the trade caravan killed can be the next overseer's problem.

Here he comes, straight up into the mountain homes envoy. I send the 1st volunteer out to help because it looks like some of them are milling around near the entrance anyway. I don't think they have any weapons or armour except copper, if even that, but maybe they can serve as meat decoys while the well-armed and armoured caravan guards take care of the giant.

Welp, that was anticlimactic. The giant takes a spear through the brain, and we don't suffer a single casualty. Man, trade depots make a pretty awesome security system. I undesignate the burrow, tag the giant's corpse for dumping, and send everyone back to work.

After that little encounter. I start mining out some cassiterite veins that I'm sure won't breach the caverns. Cassiterite means tin, and tin means bronze, and bronze means not needing to hide like little faggots from an embarrassingly easily-defeated monster.

I also set up a crossbow militia squad. We've got plenty of food, so no more hunting. The hunters and rangers are instead put into a crossbow militia to arrow-spam anyone who looks at them wrong. I put in an order for leather quivers, wooden crossbows and copper bolts. Also, I put my wife in charge because I'm nepotistic as fuck, and also she's the best markswoman.

I also start digging out a magmaduct and cistern so that we can dump magma directly onto our entrance in emergencies. I probably won't manage to get it functional before spring. I name this unfinished contraption "The Cleveland Steamer".

We're at war with the humans? Welp. Everyone's running back to the burrows, and fortunately the mountainhomes caravan seems to have glitched since killing the giant because they're just sitting around in the entrance. Let's see if they can handle this siege.
