I've yet to meet a person who didn't want to kill themselves after getting 100% completion in BOTW. The game is not fun once you get past the surface level and actually spend long hours in it.
I think open world games are full of endless collectathons like that just so they can advertise a bazillion hours of gameplay, for all those speds that judge a game's value by how many dollars per hour they spent, which is such an abysmally stupid way of judging the quality of any entertainment.
My hunch was correct. What a surprise.

There's a right way to do a collectahon and a wrong way.

BOTW is the wrong way.

in comparison there's 900 korok seeds in BOTW, Spyro the dragon you have a few thousand things to collect. Spyro is a shorter game to 100% than BOTW mostly because the collectables are not spread out great distances and not stuffed with tedium and redundancy. The korok related puzzles are ass.

Welp, I can't say I agree with you that BOTW is meant to be a collectathon were you are supposed to gain 100%. You only really need to collect about half of the Korok Seeds in order to gain full inventory, and everything afterwards is just a bonus. Sort of like how in the Nier games, you only need to get about 75% completion, and the rest is just there to basically taunt you via extremely lengthy and tedious sidequests. And true, not all of the Korok Puzzles are winners, I'll admit. But many of them I still found to be really fun, even after hours upon hours of playtime.

Heck, for me at least, the best comparison to make for a game like BOTW isn't a Ubisoft or even Bethesda open-world game, but given all the amount of ways it gives you to interact with the environment, and how it subtly encourages all the experimentation, a better comparison to make would be with games like Thief, System Shock, or Deus Ex, just in an open-world setting.

There's literally a counter on the map showing your completion %. Korok Seeds give over 70% of the completion alone.

Braid was indeed Patient Zero, but it didn't strike me as anything worrying at the time, why shouldn't devs try to innovate and bring gaming forward as a storytelling medium?
I dont have a problem with that but braid was getting insane attention from the press but barely any from gamers, not even gamers I knew were into the indie scene and nobody was playing braid beyond the first couple levels. Where was the innovation? rewind time? prince of persia was doing that in a 3D AAA game 5 years before

Back then I thought it was simply a case of "baby's first game" like normalfags who only knew GTA discovering there were games beyond that, after all even flash games like time fcuk (from the guy who later did meat boy) were more innovative for me. Then it became clear only hipsters who didnt actually play games were obsessed with braid. And when GG made all the rumors about game journos' corruption true and blow was part of the clique it was finally clear why it got so much praise

That witness game he made also got a ton of praise for a walking simulator with a few puzzles, dont know anyone who played and actually paid for it
But I had no idea how much that movement would be hijacked by politics and subsequently ruined and how that, like a virus, would spread from the indie scene to AAA development as well.
The politics part was always a coverup for nepotism and corruption. The guy who made super meat boy got fucked out of awards for not being part of the inner circle
It's funny because in my personal life there was possibility I could have been born into a very wealthy family, I'm dead serious about that
Alright, elaborate
I embarrassingly admit I used to be one of those people back then, not that I ever played Braid at all, I mean one of those people looking down on Halo/Gears/CoD and a "games as art" type.
Outside the online experience which its almost always full of shitheads the bungie halo games had a really nice atmosphere and an interesting universe with some depth to it. Even their last game reach you can feel the devs wanted to make a game with spirit, not just pump another shit game because microsoft owned their asses

I really feel out of place in modern gaming, they just don't make them like they used to and I question whether I should bothering with this hobby anymore or at least with current games.
How old are you? just asking, because I been feeling out of place in vidya for a while
They're all so ugly, remember when they used to find attractive people to present video games?
I remember those days and thinking "this is so fake, get some real gamers there"

So what they do? put other normie wannabes but ugly and insufferable

It's just a percentage, like Nier's counter for how many sidequests are left. All games have them. Again, you only need around half the Korok Seeds to gain everything essential, and if one is skilled at the game, you don't need to do all the shrines either. There's a reason why I compare it to those immersive sims; there's almost always another way to progress.

You seem really hyper-focused on the completion % btw.

I thought Video Kojimbo was going to doing a Macross game!?

And all we're getting is more walking and ad placements. That's the true 9/11 reprisal, Kojima.
If he was, it'd probably be based on the worst one (Delta).
Since this is Current Year, expect the worst music ever and not a single attractive bridge bunny in sight. And Kojima will expect you to thank him for the subversive shit he just took in your mouth.

Unless the studio suddenly found an optimization wizard in the wild, I don't expect that game to run remotely well considering the PS4 and even most PC setups struggle to run it
I just read a walkthrough and apparently you're supposed to hit them enough for her to escape. And apparently failing the lockpicking is normal because....growth.

Only a retard would care about and spend time getting 100% of the Korok Seeds in BOTW.

Even Nintendo pointed this out by making the reward a literal piece of golden shit.

So if that is what ruined the game for you, that's kind of on you.

I distinctly remember them telling us in advance that it's not a game meant to be 100% completed.

The reason that the Korok seeds numbers are so wild is so that someone just wandering can get a sizable number of them just by being observant, and not have to worry about scouring literally every last nook and cranny to get all the inventory slots. They're meant to be something you just pick up along the way, with the high max number giving a weak reward because it's only there to mollify the nutjobs who'd actually do that.

I'm not even sure what influence GRRM had on Elden Ring, it just looks like a combination of previous From Software titles

Seem Martin basically just created the setting and some background for the game.

He's not determining individual plot points as much as he is creating the world and setting the foundation for Miyazaki and FromSoftware to build upon. Miyazaki himself described Martin's role as being similar to a dungeon master's guidebook. He's not the dungeon master, who guides the narrative through its various twists and turns, but he established the rules within which the story must happen.

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin collaborated with the game developers early on to help create the setting

According to Miyazaki, the majority of Martin's work on Elden Ring has been fleshing out an era prior to the one that will be explored by players, and includes establishing the world's history and mythology

It was a weird time for gaming, people really took Ebert's "a video game is not art" comment personally and tried to "prove" him wrong.

It was also the time that "modern gaming sucks" really took off in a big way as a meme and people tried to recapture the spirit of the 8 bit/16 bit era.

Neither of those things are bad things in of themselves, it's just that toxic cultural trends outside of gaming came along, namely hipsters and later SJWs and spoiled things.

Gamers really used to eat, sleep and breath video games, there was a time in which any carpet baggers that showed up were told to fuck off, but the Woke kept using the "muh sexism and racism" card over and over and any ability to rationally debate things was lost.

The politics part was always a coverup for nepotism and corruption. The guy who made super meat boy got fucked out of awards for not being part of the inner circle
It's true, what we call "Woke" is one great big scam, it's a scam for money and it's a scam for power, it's sociopathic people preying on others' empathy to create a shield in order to get away with their con jobs, it's disgusting that people are allowed to get away with it.

Alright, elaborate
I can't go into too much detail or provide proof without power leveling too much, but my great grandad was a very successful businessman, we're talking a millionaire, but my great grandad died prematurely and my granddad had a gambling addiction and pissed all that money away long before I was born.

I am 100% not bullshitting you, I think about that sometimes that I could have been born into a millionaire family, but I can very easily see myself becoming one of these idiot hipster trust fund SJW douchebags and I hate that idea, I'll take smarts over money, having a good head on your shoulders is not something money can buy.

That's why I liked Halo and that's why I liked Gears, as cheesy as it was Gears actually did expect you to care about it's story and characters, the polar opposite of what Epic is making today.

I'm not asking for a game to have a brilliant story, just something interesting enough to add some investment in what you're doing.

In CoD though the story has always been very, very secondary and that's why I've never gotten into it.

How old are you? just asking, because I been feeling out of place in vidya for a while
31, I only truly started to feel like I was losing the plot in 2017 with the rise of PUBG and Fortnite, but 2017 was also a year of some of the best games I've ever played, so I thought it was going to be ok.

But now the fad games like Among Us keep coming and I don't care, TLOU2 felt like a complete slap in the face and the failure of Cyberpunk 2077 really seems like development is broken at the moment, at least RE8 delivered but I really don't know how much longer I care about current gaming.

TLOU2 especially was a real "yeah, fuck this" moment, as a big fan of the first game I waited years for that sequel only for it to have a message of violence aimed at guys like me, if that's the future of gaming I want no part in it.

Well to be fair I probably wouldn't quit completely, I'd still follow Japanese games at least, but the western scene really does seem like it's going into the toilet at the moment.

I remember those days and thinking "this is so fake, get some real gamers there"

So what they do? put other normie wannabes but ugly and insufferable
It's the worst of both worlds lmao.

New World deep dive is on in 15 or so https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVtps2a_oCI
It's being developed by Amazon, and would you look at that Summer Game Fest presented by Prime Gaming so that probably explains why a mildly interesting at best MMO is getting its own time slot.

I've heard the latest sperging on that game, with the cash shop and the stale gameplay, it doesn't look good.

if that's the future of gaming I want no part in it.

I've got bad news for you Dom.

You're getting old.

This is nothing new with video games. The industry has always gone through style and tone changes. Most normal people stop being dedicated to games once they hit their 30's. At best they might just play a few niche titles that appeal to them. (or sports titles I guess for the real hardcore normies)

You're going to have a few story focused games, but you're not going to have a ton of them. Especially from AAA unless you want Sony's shitty diversity hire forced SWJ writing in them.

Games as a service and Esports are the future for at least the next 5 years sadly, maybe more if a new trend doesn't hit. Might be time to find a more productive hobby and just play the few titles that appeal to you. Or just join the old man club (lol I'm 31 too) with me and just bitch and moan and try to piss off as many gaymers as you can.

Dudes right. I'm in my mid 30s, barely anything catches my interest anymore and the shit that does I almost never have time to play. I'm just now getting around to fucking Phantom Doctrine. I don't think a game like that would fly today because you're trying to prevent communism.
