40+ years of video games being released, many of which can be bought on the cheap or even downloaded and emulated for free, and folks here are getting invested in Current Year shit?

A big part of the fun of video gaming is seeing things progress forward, that moment when a game rewrites what you thought was possible in a game, I still vividly remember how impressive Devil May Cry looked at the time and how impressive the scope of Grand Theft Auto III was for two random examples.

Classic gaming is wonderful but if current games cease to be worth it then we've really lost something major, it's not like movies or books where it doesn't matter as much if current stuff goes to shit as there's not a real fundamental difference between watching a movie from decades ago and a movie today and of course there's zero difference between a book written centuries ago and one written today, it's still words on paper, but video games being very tied into technology is something different.

Thinking further about it I probably am being too pessimistic, "gaming sucks now" has been a meme since pretty much the beginning and I've always found that mindset kind of annoying, so I don't want to wind up one of those people as well.

In my opinion gaming's worst years was 2009-2012 and even then I can easily list off plenty of great games that came out during that period, so there's probably always going to be stuff worth playing, even if there's less of it.

I had just kind of hoped this year's E3/whatever the fuck it is would be more interesting than it has been so far.

Yup, it was Artifact and it failed BIG time. Even worse, they plan on reviving the game as Artifact 2.0 as if the game already hasn't worked the first time.

Just a quick heads up, Artifact 2.0 died a few months ago in Closed Beta. You can still download and play both versions (Artifact Classic and Artifact Foundry) but it won't get any new updates.

Dota Underlords also hasn't been updated since November last year, I believe.

That's just a general trend in most media I think. It's kinda how mid-budget films have died, now it's either indieshit or a spectacle. Maybe streaming services have alleviated this a bit, but then you're chained to a whole other beast.

The biggest problem is that building a big studio that makes big games is nearly impossible today. Making that small studio -> big studio jump isn't happening with the middle missing unless you have connections that are willing to take a risk on you (not the game).

Game industry (especially in the US) is just Hollywood now, either you ask Uncle Ezekiel for a career in the entertainment industry at your Bar Mitzvah or you're pretty much shit out of luck.

It's never going to happen. I don't know how much clearer I can make this for you. The AAA industry has never "gone back" to doing games the way they did a decade+ ago. The best you can hope for is the occasional gem, probably from an independent.

For someone who has regularly complained about gamers bitching about Games going "Hollywood" you certainly seem to be the guy taking it the hardest.
