It depends on where you are, I suppose, but presently a loaf of bread is like 5 dollars at the grocery store near me, and costs me perhaps a dollar to make at home. Not sure the economy of scale is benefitting us anymore. People also didn't commonly have their own oven in their home in ancient rome so the comparison is rather absurd.

I baked a lot of bread during the pandemic to feed a house with four bread loving adults and the result was never quite as good as bakery bread I think they got like a special yeast culture over there. No matter what variation it was never really *right*, just sort of OK. Ovens are also not all created equal; bread baking benefits from a really hot oven, not all of them can get there.

It's the consistency. Doordash and onlyfans are consistent forms of work. You do the work, you get the money. It's not good money, but it's money. One thing I think needs to be done with EBT is making it stricter on what people can buy on it.

It really shouldn't cover things like soda and candy and should cover mostly nutritional foods.

Find someone who wants something covered by EBT, buy it from a store with EBT at full price, sell it to the person who wants it at a discount, and then use the money to buy soda and candy (or whatever else).

This is what's happening in those stories about shopping carts full of steak and lobster being paid for with EBT.

The ones that will complain the most are the shady convivence stores with the absurd markups on staple items. It seems every fucking gas station takes EBT but charges 6 dollars for milk.

If they've really streamlined the process, they'll have the barcodes for EBT-covered items printed out on a sheet next to the register so you don't even have to go through the pretense of bringing the carton of milk up to the counter with your actual purchase. PS what I’m getting at here is it takes a lot of skill and effort to bake bread correctly and it’s probably better to assume SNAP recipients are low on these skills and the equipment they would need. TBH even a SNAP recipient making legit buttermilk batter fried chicken is probably gonna be a big bite out of their food budget and their time and effort to make it, hence the interest in convenience and processed food.

cooking doesnt even take that much time...in the morning, you can put a roast with potatoes/carrots/turnips/whatever in the oven for hours at 300, come back at 5-6, and you have a complete dinner with vegetables, meat that is fork tender, perfect. you can even make gravy from the drippings. (not healthy but delicious)

Just remember to spend literally five minutes or so searing the roast first. Otherwise the roast will completely suck. Five minutes in return for your next week of food being delicious.

It's more the skill and ingredients than the equipment. Commercial breadmakers have standardized recipes and processes developed to make bread that tastes good 99.99% of loaves. Buying the three basic ingredients at wal-mart, adding water, and baking your own isn't going to deliver the same results as a commercial bread that has dough conditioners and emulsifiers etc. also in the recipe. A normal kitchen oven can reach the necessary temperature to bake bread, that isn't the problem
