We:
-don't pay for cable/streaming other than amazon premium
-buy "ugly" veggies (some stores will sell the less desirable looking vegetables and fruit for extremely cheap)
-buy shelf stable products like rice, beans, canned goods, and even less tasty stuff like powdered eggs
-heavily limit frozen food purchases, and those that are, are usually frozen veggies. We occasionally get a treat here and there like icecream.
-bought a mid 2000s car, 2014 I believe? Not as sturdy as a 90s car but far, far cheaper since old cars are now at a premium.
-raise 6 chickens for eggs. They have a 40lb bag of feed that lasts several months.
-trade goods with neighbors. I've traded fresh eggs for clothes, cat food, all kinds of things.
-we reuse old cloth and re sew our clothes. You get good at it after a while and nobody notices the fixes. I do it entirely by hand.
-husband donates plasma
We are still comfortable enough to have our own ps5's, several animals, and nice electronics. They aren't regular purchases, they're something nice we allow ourselves to have if we do good for the month. If we are in the negative, we buckle down and restrict spending. We keep a seperate account for emergencies which counts pets (4 cats, 4 finches, 2 cockatiels.)
I think altogether my husband makes..... like 45k a year before tax?
Stuff is a bit tight, but we're still fairly comfortable. It helps we aren't in a major city, though ours is far from small.
Those that are like me and genuinely can't work, do something you *can*. Size down, sell stuff you don't need, offer to do chores for neighbors for food or supplies. I help care for the older people in my neighborhood by checking on them, talking to them for a bit, and helping move stuff. I help weed and garden in spring and summer.
As I said, we do have some nice things, but those are *rewards* for doing well for ourselves. Relying on the government unironically encourages rifts in communities. You don't think to ask for help, you become too prideful for it and then assume there is no other option. You are crippling yourself not looking for solutions and just decrying how much this is going to hurt you.
EBT is very new, all things considered. We have existed for a very long time without it and survived. Disabled people didn't just recently start existing. Life was already hard for them, it always has been, it seems even harder now for them because now they have no sense of community, they have govt and nothing else.
Life doesn't owe me shit just because my brain got scrambled. I didn't ask to be born, but I don't get to have free shit just because I got dealt a bad hand. And just because I can't hold a traditional job doesn't mean I'm worthless to my community. I care for my animals, and as I said earlier, I help my elderly neighbors with things they can't do. I'm not paid for it, I just do it and occasionally I get gifted stuff or trade goods. This is how its' been done for THOUSANDS of years, it won't just suddenly stop working now.
Edit: I also took up trying my hand at building shit. I take apart bad electronics, furniture, etc and use them for other stuff. I've managed to extend the life of several appliances this way, as well as fix busted furnature and make it look as good as new.
We bought our house in our early to mid 20s, we are in our early 30's now.
I think a big reason people(and I mean people not niggers) cry over stuff like welfare being cut is not that they would be left out to dry per say. But that it's easier to take the state's money than people's charity. Both as pride and responsibility. You'll have to admit you need charity and then be thankful enough that you keep receiving it. While state money is guaranteed by simple written rules not social contracts and it's no different in your mind than a grant or free money depending on how you look at it.
If you flip it around and ask someone would you rather pay taxes or would you rather just give money to shit you care about it's always gonna be the latter minus fart huffing responses about things like the government will spend it better

I have to be 100% honest I was watching the news in the background and heard a lady from the USDA mention it in an interview.

Behind the sentences of every pessimist is a disappointed dreamer. I would be lying if I were to say I didn't want to believe; but I've yet to see significant change. Both Trump and Biden are in the business of blowing their accomplishments out of proportion and slapping their names on anything to appeal to their base. More than anything I want more than a technicality.
I don't want this to be a two-week thing just for there to be some kind of tepid resolution that results in an ineffective change, followed by yet another victory lap.
I do agree that there is some pushback to the norm, but I also feel like it hasn't been enough that we won't be doing the same tired song and dance again next year.

While I strongly think something will happen last minute to prevent any sort of issue, if there's even a 1% chance that their will be trouble, I'm going to stay cautious.
I truely feel for any Kiwis that will be effected by this. If you guys have even just $20 or $40 extra dollars go buy yourself either a bag of plain white rice and beans (black or pinto are good) and/or flour and lentils. Rice and beans are a complete protein when combined in a meal and so is wheat/bread and lentils. Also grab a big jar of PB for the protein, carbs and calories, a cheap jar of multi vitamins, and if you have any leftover money stock up on cheap canned goods like soup, spegghetti-o type cans, canned tuna, chicken, and some mixed veggies. Oatmeal is extremely filling and an awesome comfort food and it's also cheap. Bannas are hella cheap and you can buy several bunches, cut them into thirds and freeze them for storage. They make awesome smoothies if you have any protein powder or just add them to the oatmeal for extra carbs and calories. You can easily get a solid month of food with $20 if you just stick to the bare essentials. Stock up on lots of salt and cheap season mixes also or you're gonna get bored fast.
If you don't already have a gun, get one, and some Gold dots or Saber point or any other good hollow point brand.
I, like many other Kiwi women on here am a mother, so I want to limit any trips to the grocery store other than a quick dash in for milk for the youngest kids. If it were just me shopping I wouldn't care as much, but I can't go anywhere without lugging several kids along and I'm going to be on high alert when shopping. I just bought several bullet proof panels for the diaper bag and kids backpacks, and I'm always packing with an extra magazine. I highly encourage all Kiwi fems to buy and learn to use a gun, especially if you have children.
I’d also say that this is a great them if year to be needing to budget long term. Pumpkin puree has close to endless uses and when stored in a freezer can last up to 8 months, just in time for more pumpkins to be available.
Squash is also a very filling item you can get in bulk for cheap. For centuries people harvested fall crops to last a harsh winter, there’s no reason you can do so now.
