You know, I've watched enough crime shows, and shows where a journalist is killed by dictatorships, and so on because of not knowing how phones work to say this.

"Just take the fucking battery out jesus fucking christ". Also stop buying phones that don't let you take the battery out, because the amount stores charge to replace a battery on those phones is the real crime here.

For those too lazy to read the article, all this does is alert you if your phone is still sending data out while in airplane mode.

The battery is not removable in most modern smartphones now. The only real approach is don't use a smartphone, which isn't practical for people who really just want to keep the NSA from bulk-collecting their data unconstitutionally.

You mean not easily removable. There are how-to videos for most popular models, though. Powering them off entirely is also usually a reliable method of not having them transmit information.
 
Just buy a basic CELLPHONE with no camera jfc. LG just released a couple. Just pure data, no wifi, no Bluetooth. Oh and hey, swappable batteries!

I swear secondary chip phones should be packed in with overpriced smartphones.

I've lost count of how many times I've found my $100 removable battery sped phone able to be more functional than my friends' expensive as fuck smart phones.
