Elden Ring

In all seriousness, has there ever been a movie adaptation of a game that's any good? Halfway decent?
Detective Pikachu, Sonic, the Super Mario Bros movie 2023, Minecraft (kids love it). There are only a handful decent movies compared to the massive mountain of trash. That's why there is no hope for the Elden Ring movie.

Elden Rang is about to become a reality :story:

I'm cautiously optimistic about a film adaptation, if for no other reason whatever they make is going to necessarily have to be something kind of crazy and original since outside of the lore there's not much you could actually adapt. Plus it's been awhile since there's been a proper high budget fantasy film for theaters, hope A24 shells out the big bux and keeps the CGI to a minimum.

This isn't conventionally filmable, and if there's one thing Hollywood loves it's the myopia of convention.

The "best" I could hope for would be a fantasy zombie action flick about a mysterious mute warrior Tarnished hacking their way to Godrick the Grafted and killing him, with stuff like Melina & the Roundtable Hold taking a backseat as some sort of ambiguously real dream sequence. Anything past that would stretch it too thin.

No one probably cares in light of the A24 goyslop news, but if anyone here is a solo player looking for 2 others to play Nightreign with next week, me and a buddy are looking for a third person to join us. PM me if interested.

The director only makes edgy military films, apparently. The guy never shot a sword in his life. What's going on?
The writer director is a fan of Fromsoft games, but the problem is all his recent films are political or feminist in some way.
It's all been shit like Men or Civil War and while Garland is talented I hate everything he does now.

They're going to slopify the plot, so lets just get that out of the way. Theres no way you can sell a game with a silent protagonist whos appearance and weaponry is dependent on origin and character creation. They will first cast Pedro Pascal as The Tarnished. Next is diversifying the rest of the cast to fit modern sensibilities and a general quota, as well as using recognizable actors and actresses. Zendaya WILL be Melina and other characters will get raceswaps too like Godfrey or Radahn. The entire movies going to be horrific CGI that will completely butcher the aesthetic of the game from the enemies to the world itself. I'm talking all green screen, uncanny valley shit like Avatar or Warcraft. Finally the movies going to have modern political rhetoric attached to it.

So while I think the film will be trash and also successful it's important to remember a couple things.
I doubt A24 would have the money to hire all those people and Garland isn't a retard so he is capable of writing a script with limited dialogue like Dredd. I imagine the film will probably be a prequel or a small event and not the entire game, but there will be politics and feminist shit.

I would just start grieving because the film will make money and Fromsoft has so far is doing two multiplayer games and now is branching into Hollywood so start accepting the golden era is over.

I'm sure Nightreign having 0 hype and Duskblood being attached to an overpriced, piece of shit console is going to be a reality check for them. Or not and redditors/shills will just buy whatever the brand advertises. Either way its gonna be interesting to see. The movie itself though? I don't see that performing well. Just because Elden Ring sold 25+ million sales doesn't mean a movie will have millions eager to watch it.

I mean, the story of Elden Ring from the player's perspective is boring. A mute murderhobo comes along and kills everyone, the end.

More likely is that they focus on a character in the lore - Godfrey seems like the most compelling, or maybe Melina in the leadup to her first attempt to burn the Erdtree - and explore the pre-shattering leading up into the shattering. Which can at least be said to have a story attached to it.

It'll still probably be bad, though. Ex Machina was a very fun film, but it was also a very character-driven film that played at bigger-picture questions about ethics and identity. I mean, the robot chick was crazy, and Marika was crazy, so maybe that's enough of a throughline.
