Is it just me or do slow weapons kind of suck in this game? It seems like bosses have shorter openings compared to previous souls games, but I've only been playing a few hours

Definitely not you, had a greatsword maxed out before I realized I couldn't kill shit with it due to fast attacking enemies stunlocking you and canceling your slow attacks.

Had to respec and am having much more success with a faith/intelligence build.

My build is double-wielding greatswords, and I can tell you that while some bosses are incredibly hard because of it, others you can stunlock them until your stamina's gone. Black-knife assassins are surprisingly easy as long as you dodge their attacks, and while annoying pricks like the Godskin Apostle are invulnerable to stunlocking and really fast, the one-handed attack after you dodge fits perfectly within his opening, so it just becomes a slow fight.
I do feel you though, it feels much harder using slow weapons than usual, and not in a good way. I just wish they made it so you could cancel animations when they're ending, because that has killed me so many times.

Some thoughts:
  • From's style of character interaction was minimalistic (to a fault), romance and sex are unheard of, but in ER we've got full blown accounts and not just implications of marital ties and discussion of offspring - it blew me away when the pope turtle started talking about Queen Marika's second husband and their children while people still have trouble understanding Gwyn's family tree and who the Queen of Lothric is. The change is pretty interesting. There's also an item description that basically says in esoteric Souls Dark English that a woman banged so many depraved things that she spawned more cursed things and there's everything about that hug lady; the salacious undertones would be screaming text outside of a From game. I'm certain it comes from GRR Martin's touch and it irritates my inner pedant when people assume that since he's a writer he must've done the job of quest/dialogue writers.
  • The damage everything does is obscene, it's like any points in VIG that aren't the soft cap don't mean shit. I get it but it's not fun. I can't enjoy the environment and be in the mindset to explore when everything hits like a miniboss and one wrong move can murder characters at levels that should really feel stronger than toilet paper. inb4 git gud
  • I was looking forward to the music a lot, it was one of the reasons why I preordered, yet none of the tracks besides Limgrave's ambience stuck with me after 100+ hours. This includes bosses and that's definitely because I'm either too busy dying or surviving to listen to background music, see above. I wonder why the composers never pulled off another plin plin plon ever again? There was a rhythm in previous bosses is lost with every boss in ER delaying and roll catching, made worse by the copypasted ones in the generic dungeons that all share the track. The result is that they feel like two DS1 bosses lazily shoved into a room together or a giant seizing mass, if they were going to do weird long combos they should've taken more pages out of the Dancer's book.
  • Why does every large attack need a shockwave, it feels so cheap and there only to fuck up long time Souls players than a fresh challenge.
  • Look at how none of us are complaining about the poison swamps.
  • For a game that sheds the name, it feels like Dark Souls 4 without the Dark Souls yet they've given us a world of the same thing with the gall to bring back Patches and MLGS while everyone else I've grown to love is just gone and replaced by British person #8654 doing this as a side gig. I barely care about any of these new characters who sound like an extra off of local TV. And for a game that isn't Dark Souls 4 there's so much fucking fire in it.
I was thinking about the second point.
Basically every non-trash enemy in the game deals at least 60% of your healthbar with almost all of its attacks, meaning that when fighting them you basically nead to heal after every hit taken, otherwise the next hit kills you. This is severely retarded.
What really examplified this for me were the fat zombie-like enemies with big fuckoff axes that deal 70% of my healthbar with an axe attack and also 70% with a simple kick. Shockwave does about 50%.
You can wear the heavyiest armor possible, have 40 points in vitality and youre still always 2 hits away from death. This is unacceptable and yet i understand why fromsoft did this. Without those insane damage numbers the sheer amount of estus you have would mean that nothing in the game coud pose a legitimate threat to the player.
This ties in with the post i made about game design and how combat is just barely working in ER now.

By the end I was maining sword and shield for dungeons and only did jump attack with my greatsword against bosses.

I'll agree on that besides the fantastic main theme I think the rest of the soundtrack suffered from needing lots and lots of ambient tracks to complement the open world

But the Ancestor Spirit theme is great just because of how unique it is.
The game needed more of this

Other than Alt-F4 is there a good way to quit faster? I fear the anti-cheat will think I'm a rage quitter if I keep doing that. It is absolutely retarded if the right way is going into meny, settings, quit ... main menu, press any key to start, logging in to server, accept the EULA, press up and then quit. Then it hangs around in the background as a process for a minute or so.

I beat the Fire Giant. Another boss I didn't enjoy. Now I have no idea where to go now.
Go up to the kiln and all the way around it is a bonfire, you will be directly told what to do.

You will be asked to burn the Erdtree, which will make it burning the rest of the game, so if you like it being golden hold off for now. Once you burn it you will be able to travel to Farum Azula.

The difference between deep-int and deep-faith spells is pretty amusing. Int gets some highly impractical ones that nevertheless hit like seventeen freight trains if they do connect, plus the "I definitely beat the game" laser to pair with the one from the "I have pressed dodge at least five times" faith-int sword's weapon art. Faith gets... some 5 second cast time wet noodles; if you're not rockin' the dragon breaths, there's no point in pumping that stat beyond picking up the utility skills you want or pumping a weapon that scales highly with it.

While From is obviously busy with performance and stability fixes first and foremost, I also do hope they get around to nerfing the damage on a lot of different weapon arts that completely trivialize the game - not to mention how broken self-immolation is with the death shotel. I briefly tried out faith-int to see how some of the golden order spells perform (terribly); meanwhile the int-faith sword's weapon art killed essentially every boss around my level in 2-3 shots.
The amount of times bosses get reused is jarring.
It'll probably matter less in repeated plays, as people will just go and do the side-content they want for the items they need, then otherwise focus on the main content. Especially the PvP scene, of which I imagine 90% will just rush to the stupid katana anyways. Of course, in a first-time-let's-see-everything play... dragons are tedious as fuck, erdtree wardens are tedious as fuck, tree spirits are tedious as fuck. There's a lot of tedium.

The poison swamp in ER is fine because you can summon torrent.
The scarlet rot lake is NOT okay.
In case you're having any problems with it, you can learn how to craft the item that cures you near the Safril River Base grace site. It's the Armorer's Craftbook [6] if you want to know.

Apparently people are screaming in disgust that Fromsoft will now make future games styled like Elden Ring

Those people are wrong.
I'd rather have my semi linear experience than wondering around and hoping I'm in a general direction that won't get me instakilled by a boss.

That being said, if the world was smaller but packed more with unique shit, that might be the best of both worlds.

Flame, Clease Me and the purge items will probably be your friends.

I didn’t realize Ranni’s mom was so close after neo Sif. I’m a lot closer to ungimping my character than I thought.

What weapons seem like they’re a little off-meta but still fun in pvp if Fromsoft gets around to tuning shit? I used Nameless King’s spear a lot in 3 because a lot of people didn’t seem to know when to roll through the weapon art. The madness spear might still be fun even if they fix dodged attacks applying it due to franzy shit synergizing pretty well. You can go in for the grab miracle of hit them with the sniper when frenzy procs for example; and you can’t spam shit without killing yourself.

I don't think theyre ever going to fix the build up of statuses in pvp even when you dodge the attacks. It happened in 3 where you could get frostbite build up despite dodging. Unless they rework more of the netcode I don't think it will be fixed
The legendary greatsword (Marais executioner's sword ) that you can throw at people might be good. Combining it with some other strength weapon or some arcane incantations could translate to a build good in both melee and range.
