Remember how I said the PS4 version's sorceries didn't get the buffed FP? I just saw that the merchants aren't selling smithing stones as well, but the shield rebalancing and SoNAF nerf went through. Something like this that wasn't discussed was the Reduvia didn't have Arc scaling before 1.3. I don't mean 'scaling didn't work' I mean there was no letter or arcane requirement. I'm starting to wonder if I got a weird copy or if the PS4 version is getting wonky patches no one's talking about because they're all on PC, PS5, or Xbox.

idk, while it's interesting to learn just what the fuck happened in the plot of a 40+ hours game the lore is so insanely convoluted it just doesn't flow well in the original Dark Souls fashion. Like what is Omen? What is Empyriean? What are the outer gods and Why do they care what happens in the world? What is the Great Will? Why every one of the demi gods seems to get absolutely fucked in vitro? How do you keep track on 10+ minor deities and who birthed them? Why non of the human races matter except the Merchant Guild? And what are the Albians?

Dark Souls had a lot of areas be self contained and the base story itself is simple. But having such a convoluted plot doesn't work when you get snippets of text, unless you have a huge amount of time to compile it all together (and that's assuming you don't miss any item that has a large implications to the lore).
Tbh dark souls 3 lore made no sense at times, was also convoluted and even seemed to contradict the previous games
-Yorshka being a half-breed and claiming Gwyndolin was her brother
-Anor londo remaining there after countless ages
-For years we assumed the world alternated between ages of fire and dark after DS1 but nope it's been age of fire since forever.
Guess this happens when the game is essentially retooled in the span of 9 months before release, your original plans go out the window and there is little time to polish.

Guess Elden Ring having such a long dev time (with no major issues) and a competent novelist helping might mean the story and lore are a lot more cohesive.
Speaking of that, I was genuinely surprised when Elden Ring didn't receive any last minute delays, I was expecting the game to be delayed by two weeks when that RCE exploit was found in all dark soul games.

Anyone noticed how Melina looks like the blind seer from demon souls in the lord of frenzied flame ending?
Turns out there is a reason to upgrade your shield. Carian Retaliation scales with it and it looks strong as fuck:

Wait, considering that the self-immolation incantation can proc the sentinel greatshield's weapon art. Could it also proc Carian retaliation? I'm gonna see if it actually does. One sec.

EDIT: Nope, apparently they undid this interaction in general. Ahwell.

I've seen an SL1 run where they used the similar Golden Retaliation that way to get an at-will rocket launcher on a shield so I guess it did work pre-patch at least.

However it looks like you can do something similar with glintstone consumables:

Yeah and there's an interesting combo between fire's deadly sin and any flame-related incantation buff. Specially bloodflame. In that the constant AoE around you also procs the buff's secondary effect.

Yeah, adding bleed buildup to fire sin actually makes it worthwhile, but considering the upkeep (and how only keen/heavy/qual infusions can USE weapon buffs, ew) I personally don't like it.
100% getting nerfed tho, elden ring is going the way of ESO and DS2 and shit's going to get fucked up to appease the 5 dedicated pvprs. Which fucking sucks.

Yes, I miss night and flame stance range, idgaf about the damage, I just wanted to use sorceries without a fucking staff that does 5 dmg in melee without slicer involved.
At this point, what do hex builds even have? The hex staves are shit, but i guess the hex seal is fun.

Hey does anyone know how to fix the invisible npcs/enemies glitch? My shit cpu cant handle them I guess and they stop rendering.

Gotta say, some of these side quests are damn near impossible to figure out without the wiki to guide you. Anyone tried doing Sellen's quest? You know, the witch woman in Lingrave early on who will teach you sorceries? So if you go search Weeping Peninsula, you might find her shackled up there, but upon going back to the initial place, she's there? Turns out her questline starts when you go to the Hermit Village...in Mount Gelmir, and interact with one NPC after killing the boss. That is a place that you only really go to once you have well left Lingrave behind.

So after this, she asks you to find someone else and gives you a key to open blocked gates, somewhere in the shithole that is Caelid. You might think its the Sellia, Town of Sorcery and all their magical gates? Nope, its above the village, near the Church of Rot, you find this one hostile wizard in a graveyard, kill him, go behind the gravestone, hit the cliff face...and it's a hidden wall. No, you don't get hints, and if anything it misleads you by mentioning Sellia.

So you go through the dungeon, beat one of the worst designed gank squad bosses, three Putrid Crystalians who all inflict scarlet rot with every attack that lands. So that means you found the guy right? Nope, he was down this area with no indication, guarded by a wizard. So you go there, interact with the guy and return to her. Now, it only progresses if you have beaten Radahn, you go to her shackled body and remove her core...and then it doesn't work. Turns out if you missed out on exhausting all of the Bearded Guy's dialogue in Redmane Castle (the one who announces the start of the Radahn Festival) after beating Radahn, can't progress. Return to find him there and her shackled body dead.

Now you had better have gone to Ranni's Rise and found Sellivus' weird doll hiding place in a hidden floor in some ruins, and then hit the main wall inside to find another body for her, because that makes a lot of sense. Then go finish the quest with a choice .

Point I'm making is, if you go into this blind, how are you meant to connect any and all of these dots and find these hiding places? You can't. Just silly.

I've reached the Giant's Forge and completed Farum Azula today. Here's my review of the bosses:
Fire Giant: First tried. Fun boss, he's slow but compensates with a big health bar and damage. Had a few problems but it was alright since I didn't use the horse and had freer movement. His second phase was very weird, he destroys his weakpoint leg, and gets a mouth and eye after drinking his own blood.
His main attacks are spitting fire, that doesn't hit underneath him, using the Flame of the Fell God, easy enough to dodge but hits like a truck, and two fast fireballs that nearly two-shot me. Staying underneath him seemed to work well enough, but his movement still made it a challenge. I like him.

Godskin Duo: I summoned Recusant Bernarl without thinking, don't regret it. The Godskin fellas are annoying on their own, but the two at the same time, while also having you kill them together is much more than annoying. Funnily enough, that move made me first try them as well. Use the pillars for Godskin Noble to not only dodge but also hit him whole he's rolling.

Maliketh: First phase is kinda hard, his main close range attack is a quick double slash that can be dodged with difficulty, while his long range ones are a quick blast of stone and slow rock that I never seemed to be able to dodge. His second phase is much more difficult though, his combos start becoming unpredictable and long, giving few breathing room and fewer attacking windows.
However, he can still be staggered, and since he's on half health, it's an effective instant kill for him. So be aggresive, pay attention to his moves, and if you're having trouble with his Max HP shortening mechanic, I think the item the invader in the opposite direction of his boss room gives is meant to help with that. Ironically, it's Recusant Bernarl, who was very angry I stole his kill it seems.
Anyway, after a few tries, I stunned him, did what was basically a third of his health, God bless pure STR builds, and killed him. I think if I took longer and had to deal with his second phase more I would have disliked him a lot. But since I didn't, I consider him a fun boss.

Placidusax: I needed to kill him to remove the Flame of Frenzy from me, so it annoyed me a lot when I found out how obscure the path to him is. Anyway, the dragon himself is cool-looking and has a massive health bar, comparable with Fire Giant's, but unlike him, his attacks are legitimately fun to dodge.
His thunderbolts can be dodged by running, and give enough room to attack once in between them. His claws are fast, but ahve enough tell to allow you to dodge them, and even when he becomes smoke, it's still noticeable. His fire attacks are dodged best by running around him or to the end of his tail, which recieves as much damage as his body by the way, remember to roll if you think the fire's too close for confort.
Honestly, after all these fights, I think I like Placidusax the most of all bosses I've currently fought. There was a lot of difficulty, but he also didn't outstay his welcome, dying to my 5-6th attempt. I'm enjoying Elden Ring a lot more near the end than in the beginning.

That’s actually pretty neat. Do you know if smaller shields retain better parry windows with it, or is that exclusive to default buckler parries?

I’ve already found that a fast attack weapon like a dagger or rapier into carian slicer off-hand could be a lot of fun on my new character. Just want something with int that’s be fun in pvp other than moonveil.

From what (incomplete) testing I've seen it seems like it does work slightly better on small shields: a longer window as you go smaller, with the physical parry having pretty much the same window as Parry for a given shield (but it seems to vary by the specific flavour of Retaliation you use, some of them might have an earlier start-up like Buckler Parry does, but not the length). And the magic parry window is looong, like more than double that time.
So it's basically always superior to Parry, but Buckler Parry might have two or three frames on it (though I've seen stuff suggesting Buckler might get a couple bonus start-up frames depending on stamina? idk). Probably very worth it for the versatility since it doesn't cost FP unless it eats some magic.

A basic dog in the Snowfields can one shot me at 60 VIG and Morgotts rune with my shield up, as its retarded instant bite counts as enough blood loss to proc twice.

All that sperging about DS2 being "the B team" with design and balance is horse shit.
If they're like the rot dogs, I'm about 95% sure it's a glitch. When they go into their pitbull child mauling rage, being struck by their lunge makes you take a gorillion hits all at once and explode into a blood shower. I started running past them because fuck that.

Fuck the T-Rex dogs, got hit once and staggered, tried madly to roll away or move away and as soon as I get control back I get hit again for the remaining for my health bar.

They are amongst the enemies I don't like fighting and while not as bad as the crucible knights they are still annoying. I don't know why these kinds of enemies have to have massive amounts of HP, tons of damage and in the case of crucible knights damage negation in the form of shields, my frenzy laser with buffs deals like 1200-1400 damage to the dogs, have to hit them three times to kill them. I would be fine if these were non respsawning and confined to one, maybe TWO in an area but no, they are normal enemies. I found the birds scary to fight in caelid, I find them a drag in the mountains since they have so much hp and can fly.
It is weird to fight what feels like an enemy thats balanced around or under your current power level then come these motherfuckers who delete one third of your hp bar (40 vig and talismans that boost hp) and have inflated HP pools.

I keep wondering if they will revise the HP values of some of these enemies or not, because again, fighting them as normal enemies becomes a drag.
