I’ve run across a few accounts of British people who apparently transitioned F to M with no fuss In the early/mid 20th century. It seems very likely that they had 5-alpha reductase deficiency (5-ARD). Genital development in utero is borked and male (XY with normal SRY) babies are born with female-appearing or ambiguous genitals or with micro penises. The developmental changes of puberty are NOT borked however, and genitals become much more male-appearing. Testicles don’t descend but still produce sperm. Caster Semenya has this.

Clearly, it was deemed preferable that ”little girls “ who developed the equivalent of massive T-dicks, no breasts and no periods, be allowed to quietly morph into and assume the social roles of young men. Because they are men.

5- ARD is an intriguing disorder of sexual development utterly distinct from transness. (It’s also not the same as CAIS or PAIS — about which I will say nothing, lest the inevitable flame war be ignited.)

Fun fact about Caster's Olympic run: Every African woman on the podium that Olympics had 5-ARD. Also the British took "Don't ask, don't tell" as a national trait long before boomers tried to steal it for the gays.

No, undescended testicles cannot produce sperm.

The temperature issue with testicles and producing sperm isn't just a matter of efficiency or a recommendation, but actually a hard limit. Spermatogenesis shuts down entirely at those temperatures.

(Heat based contraception is actually very effective for this reason. Take a hot bath for an hour or so and you'll be shooting blanks for a bit.)

The troons vs terf war has kicked up a somewhat annoying conspiracy theory that Caster Semenya has fathered children. This is untrue and ultimately, just shitting on a person with an unfortunate medical condition because troons are shitheads who'll drag anyone and anything into their dumbass fight. (Not that Caster should be permitted to compete against ordinary females, but the shitty treatment of Caster in unrelated ways is unnecessary and cruel.)

May I ask how you know that Semenya has not fathered children? Your point about heat and spermatogenesis is well taken but some men with 5-ard are indeed fertile because the testicles do sometimes descend. I was in error to suggest they always don’t. Sounds like you naively believed the New York Times to be some kind of ideological cult that would never "betray" a 17 year old interview subject (interviewed to give a story a personal aspect framing, not because the subject is an expert) nobody remembers they interviewed, I think that's more of a you problem.
