This is supposedly how ol' schlomo became a rationalist.

There are so many similarly autistic and weird things like this.

Wow A silver amulet inscribed with Baye's Theorem? That's a pretty specific and unlikely piece of jewelry to find in your backyard, or anywhere really. I did some searching and even with all the resources of the internet, I couldn't find a single piece of jewelry fitting that description. Not an amulet, not a ring, the closest thing was a ceramic necklace someone makes on Etsy. But sure. Let's say someone had an item like this made and lost it in their backyard where young Yudkowsky happened upon it.
Then, he goes to sleep and dreams about a representation of an angel holding a book he's likely never seen before... and people actually believe this? People who call themselves "rational"? Cults are a scary thing.

Roko’s Basilisk also has two boxes to offer you. Perhaps you, right now, are in a simulation being run by Roko’s Basilisk. Then perhaps Roko’s Basilisk is implicitly offering you a somewhat modified version of Newcomb’s paradox, like this:

So basically, the "Rational, Atheist Master Race" has invented religion.
Replace "Creating a evil AI overlord" with "worship a deity", and it's the same thing.
The reason this causes The Pope of Atheism to spazz out is that it's demonstrating that they're no better than the drooling fundies they look down on.

It has all the problems with pascals wager and none of the pseudo feelgoodness

To me it seems like it's a little weirder, what I mean is, your reasoning makes too much sense for this guy. From his reactions to it he seems to think that just thinking about helping create the basilisk will in turn literally create the basilisk and that we will all be enslaved by a robot because someone thought about this event hard enough it will poof into existence.

If AGIs are invented, they won't be created by a bunch of neckbeards working off donations. It'll be a government project, or some multibillion dollar corporation. We are nowhere NEAR replicating the human brain. We don't even know what causes consciousness, and it will be decades before we do. True AI will not occur in our lifetime, if at all. The singularity is the Rapture for atheists. It's stupid, and these idiots draw attention and resources away from actual useful research.

Most who aren't completely nuts actually know this on some level. Otherwise, they wouldn't be so obsessed with cryonics, because if the singularity is really going to be here by next Thursday, we wouldn't even need that.

The basic cognitive malfunction here is taking shit like Moore's Law too seriously. It disregards that there are all kinds of theoretical, not to mention practical bottlenecks before you get from fancy, really fast adding machines to actual intelligence. It also utterly disregards inevitable social resistance whenever something like that even appears to be getting close.

That a lot of smart people take nonsense like this seriously (and by that I mean people like Kurzweil and not Yudkowsky) doesn't make it any less silly.

There is nothing worse than faux-religious loons calling themselves "atheist". Mr Autsism-Spock and his friends are a prime example.

I once heard someone say "a person who believes in nothing will believe in anything" as a shorthand for "people are not good at being objective at all" but I've always given that quote the fish eye for being kind of preachy. Since you mostly hear religious types use it in the context of "you don't believe in our god but you believe in (insert dubious science and/or new agey philosophy here)? Dohoho you silly athiests."

But good lord if it applies to anyone it applies to this git.

Why does no one assume that the AI will just say:
"Well thanks guys, but I am off to travel the universe! Good luck and thanks for the fish!"

If it's so horribly evil apparently just for the sake of evil, it'll probably just torture everyone forever anyway. Just for the lulz of it, maybe it will torture the ones who helped create it really extra hard, like by sending them to a simulation of Christian Hell.

Less wrong has an incredibly large audience. Everyone that wonders about the human brains somehow visited it at least once.

I've read the most part of the fanfiction until the lack of update killed my interest, It was decent.

Yes that guy is clearly autistic. Not all autistics are funny people. That guy has placed all of his efforts in the hope of someday being recognized as the father of safe AI. No one in the AI field really cares about him, and never will.

Now what.

Oh yeah, it's great.
schlomos fanfiction said:
"Hey, Draco, you know what I bet is even better for becoming friends than exchanging secrets? Committing murder."

"I have a tutor who says that," Draco allowed. He reached inside his robes and scratched himself with an easy, natural motion. "Who've you got in mind?"

Harry slammed The Quibbler down hard on the picnic table. "The guy who came up with this headline."

Draco groaned. "Not a guy. A girl. A ten-year-old girl, can you believe it? She went nuts after her mother died and her father, who owns this newspaper, is convinced that she's a seer, so when he doesn't know he asks Luna Lovegood and believes anything she says."

Not really thinking about it, Harry pulled the ring on his next can of Comed-Tea and prepared to drink. "Are you kidding me? That's even worse than Muggle journalism, which I would have thought was physically impossible."

Draco snarled. "She has some sort of perverse obsession about the Malfoys, too, and her father is politically opposed to us so he prints every word. As soon as I'm old enough I'm going to rape her."
