It barely got mentioned, and I feel like the only Kiwi who watched "Umbrella Acadamy".
The first season was good. A lot of mystery and action. Second season was okay, and I started watching season 3. This was part of what peaked me on TTD. There were HOURS of S3 dedicated to Ellen coming out as trans and all the other actors had scenes where they gave her asspats. Her yeeted teats became the center of the narrative. I guess self harm peaked with the trooning and now we need to sabotage our career.
The whole change was clumsy.

In Season 1 she had a really interesting arc - she thought she was the ugly duckling of the family but after getting manipulated by the guy she's dating (who wants revenge on the academy because he's just a normie and not magic) it turns out she's the most powerful one and inadvertently hurts those she cares about the most, ultimately bringing about the apocalypse. That was cool, it was a twist I didn't see coming.

In Season 2 they're all accidentally sent back in time (separately) to Dallas in the 1960s and Vanya immediately gets run over by a young mother, Sissy. Upon waking up she has amnesia. Over the course of many, many episodes (and in show, many, many months) Vanya bonds with Sissy (who has an abusive husband) and her son and eventually Vanya and Sissy realise they're in love. So ok, big shock a character played by Ellen Paige ends up going lesbian for "beautiful woman with abusive husband", but it gave Vanya something to do while the other characters all ran around the 1960s trying to find each other and work out what to do, and it tied into the plot nicely with the son. It was believable for a character arc. Then season 3 happens.
When I watched this, I actually laughed. It was so out of nowhere. Vanya was basically a hunted terrorist blamed for killing JFK and then had a massive time war/shootout with time travel agents. She was then travelling back to the present day and wanted to take the woman she loved and her son with her, but then has to say goodbye because Sissy doesn't want to mess up the timeline and she wants her son to have a normal life. Upon returning to the present, her and her family discover they're in an alternate reality because their "dad" met them in the past and hated them so much that he deliberately adopted different children, and then they have to fight these alternate universe counterparts and flee. They plot what to do next, they find a hotel to stay in, Vanya secretly meets with the enemy to get the magic time travel suitcase back.
The next day, after everything in the paragraph above (that happened in
one day), Vanya discovers Sissy died in 1989. She remembers that Sissy said to her “You don’t even notice the box that you’re in until someone comes along and lets you out" (in reference to being a lesbian). So she goes downstairs and gets a haircut and then tells everyone she's Viktor now. If you've not seen the show, watch the scene. That's the
entire preamble.
I mean, I get they had to do it quickly because Ellen had already transitioned irl (and her wig was terrible), but seriously this character - who has never shown any inclination for being trans whatsoever - just decides to transition out the blue. Are we supposed to assume that the entire arc about her learning she's a lesbian is actually her learning she's a man?
I'm probably going to watch the new season, but pretty much just for Klaus.
