With Page, the big difference is that she’s been in the public eye for most of her life. People can see that there has never been anything masculine about her, and that she does not appear comfortable with her new identity.The comments for the Time magazine video are quite telling, despite the astroturfing Time and YouTube do.
Seems most people are sick of the Cults narrative and aren't buying it anymore.
I think also there’s a parasocial element to it. People feel, rightly or wrongly, a sense of attachment to celebrities. So when one of them says “Actually you’ve always been wrong, I’ve always been this person instead,” their fans feel kind of betrayed. I don’t think it’s healthy, but I think that is how a lot of people think.
