It started with this image from another thread I frequent...
That then reminded me of the movie from which it was sourced...
That I learned was the directorial debut of this broken angel...
That then turned into discovering this curious pic...
That then resulted in finding this blog (A) from 2011 alluding to Ellen (22) and Barrymore (36) having a fling which may have occurred in or around the time of the movie.
That got me really thinking how: a. lascivious Hollywood is; b. how damaging it can be to, specifically, young girls; and c. yet another example of a predatory person in power and the dynamic imbalance at play (but not placed in the same strata of #MeToo because of the gender of the person in power).
They certainly took from Ellen. Bit by bit. Until what we have is a husk of a woman/facsimile of a man with a literal Ken doll torso being paraded around like they're a suave, sexy, icon of masculinity wrapped in the Golden Age Hollywood swagger, when all they are is a perpetually victimized and scared little girl whose only form of protection is shedding the parts of them that have been oogled, fapped to, forcibly touched, (fruitlessly) reclaimed for its sexual power for many years until...

Her eyes always look so sad and just... tired, no matter what effect the photographer is trying to go for, no matter wether its a publicity shot, or a paparazzi snap where she's unaware, her eyes just look defeated and beaten down.

People were speculating on whether Drew had been one of the people Ellen mentions in her book as being inappropriate with her, but apparently Ellen still loves her and mentions her positively in the book. So it's not likely that's who "groomed" her or whatever. If they had a fling, Ellen doesn't see it as predatory.

I think Drew had a hand in molding our lil pooner into the man she is today. She maybe wasn't a groomer in the traditional sense, but indeed nudged Ellen in that direction. You have to take what Ellen says in her book with a grain of salt considering her ability to rewrite history.
Firstly, consider that Drew wasn't (isn't) some sweaty, old, Weinstien-esque power player in the game who lorded a juicy gig over a young, impressionable, and aspirational Ellen, but, instead, a soft, (probably smells like literal vanilla), attractive woman who worked her way up from child stardom (and all the horrors associated with a female, child in Hollywood) to come into a position of minor power with the directing gig.
That said, Drew's age (relatively young but enough of an age gap over Ellen to command the respect of an elder), time and experience in the business has honed her sensibilities and sensitivity toward a young, impressionable, and aspirational Ellen, where there was no threat to even be presented into the realm of though, no less implied (no less expressed).
Ellen was not only armed with the knowledge of what she could get out of the relationship with no harm to her role, but also the confidence that she could trust Drew, and that she was in a safe environment. This allowed her to really immerse herself in the experience and enjoy it to its fullest.
Thus, whatever encounter they entered into wasn't through any coercion or threat of employment, but one where Ellen was of sound mind, of her own consent, was mutually pleasurable, and therefore one of the best experiences she's had. Which is why its not seen for what it really was.

Imagine you're in a cage. This cage is made up of different ideas and intangible concepts (being molested, misogyny, homophobia, general mental illness, being an aging woman in an industry that hates aging women, and so forth) but is still a cage. There are people all around you, pointing and whispering about you being in this cage. You put a blindfold on and pretend that you've escaped. The people outside are now cheering for you and are "proud of you for escaping". For a moment, you feel happy and free, but when you take the blindfold off to see if it's true, you're still in the cage and all your supporters have either left or are laughing at you.
She would rope. Many people would in that situation.
