They believe everything can be fixed overnight and a party can propel out of nowhere. Things like Perot and Wallace are more unusual than not, and either happened out of surprise (Perot, but I know less about him), or during very bad years as 1967 and 1968 appealed voters to someone like Wallace with the Long Summer. As flawed out two parties are, there's many wings in those parties that act as coalitions. Plus a third party is still unlikely to get presidency even if it gains lots of votes, or a few states, it just acts as a way to split the vote.

The party might not be bad if he has backing from like Mark Cuban; there's a hefty chunk of the left that follow him. It's mostly the healthcare people but it's a big chunk of the democratic base that isn't full blown commies. It could actually hurt the left more than the right in that situation.
