America is set up to funnel people into that mindset unfortunately. Hell, the 'american dream' has been peddles as wealth for decades. This can't be more self-evident than the country's unhealthy obsession with Hollywood celebrities and how deified they are, which is a phenomenon that doesn't really exist anywhere else. Used to be particularly bad in the 90s and 00s, when filming and uploading innocuous aspects of your life unto the internet or talking about it via a podcast wasn't standard for celebrities yet, as that was the time when the paparazzi were at their worst, egregiously crossing boundaries of peoples privacy, filming them when they just wanted to take out their family to eat in a restaurant, digging through their trash, even if it's to find stuff like used tampons, all to satisfy the demand of people who wanted to have any sort of glimpse into the lives of celebrities. Although the internet now exists to offer much healthier outlets to satisfy these obsessions, they haven't gone away, as people still refer to folks engaging in this kind of behavior as "stans", a slang term that originated from a rap song made literally a quarter of a century ago, but the stuff said in that song still stands.

I hate to quote Carlin but his quote “they call it the American Dream because you got to be asleep to believe it” is true. I think ultimately most Americans just want to provide for their families and swollen assholes like Trump and Musk are in the extreme minority. But there’s just enough of them around to give the impression that a firm handshake and a can-do attitude means you’ll be rolling in millions soon enough. Musk knows it’s bullshit and that’s why he wants a subservient underclass who know their place. We used to have laws that curbed the influence of these scumbags but in the last 45 years they more or less stopped getting enforced.
We had laws to curb them BECAUSE of scumbags just like them who got us into the last mess. When those previous idiots threw us into a depression so great we called it that, did they take a step back, go “my bad, let’s not try that again” or did they spend every moment since the laws to curb them were put in trying to dismantle them?
