The only benefit I can see to Mars is its raw materials. It would be easier to work out a way to dig those things out using drones and other things, and even then, we wouldn't need those materials until we seek to expand beyond the solar system. Exploring Mars and working out what is on the planet that we can use is worth our time.

If Elon's going to pick hypothetical planets to terraform (since the advanced technology & vast vast energy needed to accomplish said task will not feasibly exist within Musk's lifetime) he should clearly be picking a smaller body, like the Saturn's moon Titan. Or even Uranus' moons - they're within Uranus' strong magnetosphere (lopsided as it may be) & are small - theoretically terraforming one might be possible...in the far far future long after Musk died.

Politicians talking about building Mars bases might as well just discuss something else space related - like, their opinions on the Disney Star Wars sequel trilogy. Because that will result in the exact same outcome as discussing Mars bases.
