Ugh. I had a class like that once. It was supposed to be an post Civil War American history class but on the second day, we spent the majority of time talking about Occupy Wall Street (This was in early 2012). I got so annoyed that I eventually asked the professor when were we gonna talk about history and not current events that have little to nothing to do with the curriculum. And Occupy Wall Street ended up not accomplishing shit. Shocker.
That professor was really quite the smug liberal type as well. Like later on in the semester, he did an PowerPoint lecture on the 50s, in which his whole attitude on it could be summed up as "Hurr Durr these people were so stupid back then! Am I right?" Granted, the 50s in generally seemed overall like a shitty time to live in due to bigotry and the emphasis on conformity. But fuck. I really don't give a shit about your personal opinion dude, I just want to learn some history. Oh and in that same lecture, he got all pissy in regards to families in suburban southern California having lawns. Okay, I don't know why you care about what people 60 years ago did with their lawns but whatever.

You can find a race more disadvantaged than you. Black people can't be racist against white people but they can sure be racist against Native Americans.

I'm part Native, so will Asians work? Are they oppressed this week? I need the Asian Oppression Schedule.
Also, I forgot her crowning moment: she keeps one of those COLOREDS ONLY signs from the pre civil rights era in her house to remind her children of the hardships black people went through. Before she was even born. And she wasn't even born in the States. Their dad may have been but I got the vibe that the sign was her idea.

Yeah, Asians are definitely more privileged than Natives. Natives are kind of at the bottom of the privilege ladder.

East Asians, at least. All other Asians are barely a blip on their Privilege Radars.
But keeping in line with the topic of this thread, a very good friend of mine just happens to be quite the SJW. Thankfully she's not a complete nutjob and can carry a conversation without launching into a nonsensical, buzzword-filled tirade. But still, she does throw the words "patriarchy" and "diversity" and "MRA('s)" and "misogyny" around if given the chance, and sometimes within the same breath. As I said though, she's fairly okay for the most part...still, sometimes I do worry about her going off the deep end and becoming more like the people I've read about here.

Late to the party as per usual, but I spotted an interesting convo on FB between two friends, one hardline SJW (lesbian-flavored genderqueer BlackLivesMatter communist) and one simply liberal. No quotes or screenshots to avoid powerlevel, but I'll sum up:
A: LOL! This guy was crying about how someone was being racist against him. You can't be racist against whites, duh.
B: I respect your opinion and agree with you as far as the west goes, but I was in Japan for a year and some pretty racist shit went down there sometimes.
A: Racism = power + privilege. Whites still have power and privilege, even in Japan.
B: But they're a minority there ...
A: Still colonizers. Also, the atom bomb and ruthless oppression of Japanese culture. You can be prejudiced against whites, but you can't be racist against them.
B: I respect your opinion and am really trying to show my bona fides by reiterating all your stuff about power and privilege, but white people don't really have any special privilege or power there.
A: Still colonizers. Still white. Still atom bomb. QED.
B spent a lot of time larding her comments with reassurances about how yes, in the west, whites were in power and racism didn't apply to them, buuuut maybe ... Still, colonialism (and capitalism, can't forget that) mean that whites are forever in a position of undeserved influence everywhere. A seemed to think that Japan cowers before the hideous gaijin menace.
Frankly, it sounded kind of ... well ... condescending to me. Like other races and cultures are such delicate flowers that they don't have the strength to withstand our rampaging Gaijinzilla.

I overheard another friend say something similar, about how we can't condemn the iconoclasm ISIS performs on Assyrian temples because "American soldiers kill millions of people in the Middle East every day."

Actually she got a lot of negative feedback because she's friends with a lot of her own neighbors and they were really pissed that she actively let someone get hurt in a city they were trying to protect and improve.
