Epic! 8-bitguy uses 1 weird trick to detroy rare prototypes!

He's finally getting around to his Amiga video. Thought he just wouldn't do it.

New 9mm guy restoration video just dropped
I was somewhat dumbstruck to learn he'd been editing his videos on a '11 Mac mini this whole time. The mini is Apple's cheapest Mac (even cheaper than the iMacs, since the minis don't have displays and don't even ship with mice and keyboards) and that thing was probably underpowered even when it was new. It's good enough for home video editing but definitely not intended for professional use. I would have figured he would be using at least a more recent MBP if not a full Mac Pro. The new M1 Mac mini he's replacing it with is going to feel light years faster, but it's still a bit long-in-the-tooth compared to the newer M1 Pro/Max chips now available in Apple's latest MBPs. But whatever. I guess he just likes getting his money's worth.

I was doubly dumbstruck that such a tech-savvy guy wasn't backing up crucial work files. I have an external disk connected to my work machine constantly backing up via Time Machine. The initial expense instantly becomes worth it as soon as internal disks fail. Hopefully he's learned a lesson from that, even though one would think that's either a lesson he wouldn't have to learn himself or (more likely) would have already learned from working with old and unreliable machines.

It's incredibly autistic of me I know, and I enjoy his content otherwise, but there's something about the way he goes on about "RetroBriting my RetroBrite to RetroBrite my Brite Retros" that gets right on my tits.
I'm in the same boat, beyond a passing mention it's not really worth talking about let alone dedicating any more of the video then a before and after shot
Nice job bleaching the colour out of the badges, too.
Not knowing how the hell retrobriting works I was cautiously optimistic watching his latest video with the mindset it wouldn't attack the color of the logo and that somehow he knew more then me, but alas exactly what I thought would happen did

Retrobright sucks anyways, because it can make the plastics brittle and the yellowness will come back quickier (even if it's not exposed to UV light) than before.
An UV sealant might work, but at this point you might as well spray some white/beige paint and be done with it.

Or just embrace the yellowness, which adds some charm to the machine in my opinion, much like the patina you can see on antique stuff.

Since there's so many "lets clean this [old thing] up and keep it as stock as possible" channels I've thought about starting a channel meant to mod old computers, except I'm afraid a soyboy might actually deliver on the death threats such a project would receive.

From what I've seen it depends on what you do. Generally you won't really get the ire of the retro-hardware community unless you do something a) irreversible to a extremely rare piece of technology (and not something that was old but extremely common at the time) or b) gut a working retro machine just to use its case

You should find old computers, be all excited, pop the top off to expose the old innards then just pour dirt straightly into it and plant herbs or watercress, whatever the space allows for. Now that retro computer is eco and green.

Buy old hardware and do the sort of janky mods that people would have been doing at the time, ghetto overclocking by replacing crystals, interfacing random homemade hardware etc.

The LGR Blerbs is better since it's usually shorter and unscripted. His main channel videos are overproduced and a bit shallow imho. Not to mention the Mighty Voice delivery that grates after a couple of minutes.

Still I miss the comfy Clint who would crack open a soda and review a terrible DOS game
Clint must be lurking here because after 13 years (!) he's made a followup to the Depth Dwellers video. Turns out he's been collecting.

The trouble with retrobrite is that there are so many different opinions as to whether or not the yellowing will come back, yet there's not a lot of actual evidence of this occurring. This is probably the best video out there about the process.

That said..
Terry would know. He's probably one of the best known and well respected vintage computer collectors in the Southern Hemisphere.

RMC did this with a couple of BBC Micros. It turned out quite well.

I've also seen online sellers of colour matched paint for Commodore and Atari machines (but I can't see to find the links rn).

Works for me. However I have machines that aren't yellowed and I want to try and keep them that way for as long as possible. In my experience, keeping said machines in a dark place with minimal temperature variations year in year out is key.

Clint apparently has a big following in the furry community, so it wouldn't surprise me if he's visited KF a few times (although he'd never come out as lurking here because the retrogaming community is plagued by troons).

Start by getting a C64, painting it black, and then apply some ZX Spectrum diagonal rainbow stripes to the bottom right hand corner. That'd wind a few people up.

Retrocomputing community in general has a quite large overlap with furries for whatever reason, even during the times it wasn't "retro". Remember Sabrina the skunk that is official Amiga mascot? There was also some anthro fox mascot project for Linux, which came before the penguin.

Wait, Sabrina became like the truly official Amiga mascot? Endorsed by Commodore?

Linus caught furryitis penguinitis while visiting Australia:
I've always liked penguins, and when I was in Canberra a few years ago we went to the local zoo with Andrew Tridgell (of samba fame). There they had a ferocious penguin that bit me and infected me with a little known disease called penguinitis. Penguinitis makes you stay awake at nights just thinking about penguins and feeling great love towards them. So when Linux needed a mascot, the first thing that came into my mind was this picture of the majestic penguin, and the rest is history.

I'm guessing it would have been post-Commodore.

That said, claiming that anything post-Commodore Amiga-related as "official" is a lawsuit just waiting to happen.

Didn't 8-bit guy get death threats for printing new labels for old Atari games? Apparently an original Atari 2600 game with a new label is not worth the same as an Atari 2600 game with the original label in good condition for reasons I can't even begin to fathom.
