I suppose it's nice that modern products can have the Commodore name stamped on them instead of having to use names like "THEC64" or "MEGA65", but it's shocking that the Commodore logo and name aren't in the public domain yet.

And don't get me started on Cloanto hoarding the copyrights to every version of Kickstart and Workbench... Even Microshaft and Crapple don't care when you distribute old OS versions. (well, up to a point)

Microsoft, to their credit, has been releasing a lot of source code lately. I wouldn't be surprised if we get Win9x source code soon enough since that kernel is no longer used in their commercial operating systems and there's a lot of interest in preservation there.

Probably not due to all the third party code and the difficulty of actually getting a dev environment up but that would be so fucking funny it would be unreal.

This was also the generation of operating systems where they implemented one API for Microsoft software, and another, slower one for everyone else so they could look like Microsoft Office was the best performing office suite. There are bound to be a lot of skeletons buried in that code, it stems from the era just before they realised everyone was figuring out their scummy tricks and got smarter about it.

When I looked about an hour ago, there were only positive comments about the mustache so I have no idea what he's getting upset about.

I think this is the big reason we didn't see a release of the Trident rendering engine after Microsoft went full Chromium/Blink. I think they got rid of all the NSCA Moasic code (which was a whole contentious thing for years. NSCA thought they would make a ton of licensing money and then Microsoft released it for free), but there's probably still a ton in there that they're not quite sure of as far as licensing.

It's a real shame because it would have been great if Trident/Edge had been spun off into an open source project and we had a real alternative option from Gecko, Webkit and Chrome/Blink. Now we just have to wait and hope the Ladybird project pans out.

I had him on the list of potential future troons, so the mustache took me by surprise at first.

The hissy fit that he threw about it, though, is is exactly how a BPD hysterical woman would respond: "How DARE you comment on a woman's appearance! Would you care what a MAN was wearing? blah blah blah", so he's still on track.

It's cringe to talk about "keeping the dream of the C64/Atari/Spectrum alive" in fucking 2025. Like motherfucker, there are elected members of congress who weren't even alive when Commodore went bust.
To be fair, it's pretty cool how it's still possible to build a fully functional rubber-keyed ZX Spectrum replica from scratch, with almost all brand new parts including keyboard and case. Though one fewer brand new part is available now, on account of the Z80 production finishing up last year.
My troondar totally dropped the ball on this one. Much shame. I thought it was just some quirky granny. I found his channel when I was looking for info on the discontinuing of most incandescent light bulbs.
I didn't clock Fran at first either. Probably because the transition happened back before all the cool kids were doing it, hence Fran passes as a somewhat weird-looking and exceptionally nerdy grandma at first glance.

I mean the guy is into lizard shit porn, not like being a troon is going to make him worse.

What happened at VCF? I'm not getting any hits when searching, and he kinda fell off my radar until the stache came in.
I took that photo while I was there. The event was hosted at a renaissance fair for some reason, so everyone dressed up in medieval garb. It was really crazy to see in person, I didn't expect the event to get so rowdy.

wow I remember lusting after this back when it came out. It cost 2x as much as the car I wanted to put it in. ;)
I eventually just ended up with a pioneer Dolphin deck and burning CD's as needed.

And that slide out thing with the handle wasn't that odd back then. It was common in the 90s. I used to walk in to highschool with my Alpine like it was a lunchbox everyday.

I was commenting... I think on Slack at work about this, and said the money put into this would have been better spent trying to buy out Cloanto to PD all those images. Don't forget they soft-try to also assert they own the 64 roms though it's toothless since some incarnation of Commie said 'what? Distribute that, we don't fucking care."

I did too. I'm struggling with having to watch CRD to see a review.

Some people here probably saw these before but I stumbled across them and I thought readers of this thread might find it interesting, the known computer chassis manufacturer Silverstone came up with two "retro case" designs, tower and desktop, respectively. Faux 5,25" drive covers, turbo buttons, Mhz display and everything.

I couldn't find their tower design in the product lineup and it also isn't sold yet. IMO not bad, I do think the 5,25" floppy drive covers are a bit much, though. There's currently a trend of "retro looking but modern" PC hardware going on with these chinese manufacturers. Started with keyboards, I think. It's perfectly possible again to have a full beige desk setup, down to a potential game controller.

For people who have old PC mainboards (Baby AT) but no fitting case and have their gears turning now - yes, even though there's no explicit compatibility, often AT boards do fit into ATX cases.
