Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

To be fair Epic doesn't pay him to know things, just to recite their arguments : )

I just don't see how you defend this shit anymore beyond journalistic faggots, fucktards and shills.

Continous data breaches, no preloading, no accepting certain currencies, more expensive for certain payment processors, no shopping cart, forced to be used because of exclusives.

There is no positive benefit to the Epic store. It is run like a Chink website.

Since it has come out there is not one benefit to this thing. None. Every story that comes out is negative. Borderlands is the last hyped release in 2019 and you can't preload it. A 'technology' available in 2004.

The exclusive deal is paying developers for all the money they're going to lose on this platform. Lol if anyone thinks Epic is breaking even.

If you buy from key-sellers, only the key seller site gets the money. See the fucking difference? Because they've bought the keys from middle-men who may or may not be using stolen credit cards. The devs don't see any money on sales from key-selling sites, only the keys that were already bought, if they were bought legitimately. Devs don't like key sellers because the middle men aspect kills profit margins. Also they're all shady as fuck. Typically, key sellers have bought their keys from poorer regions at massive discounts then upsell them for huge profits. Big difference.
It's not even just that. G2A, Kinquin and the likes in particular often operate stolen credit cards, through identity theft, or similar very great and honest means to buy the keys. Sure, the owners of said credit cards and identities will eventually get their things straight and the bank's security people get to smash their head against the wall for the nth time when retroactively declining charges that haven't gone through and dealing in chargebacks.

While i do not personally know anyone in the games biz who has been affected by this, the gist of the matter is that the games studios end being the people who pay the chargebacks. This means that G2A and their cronies end up with a game key that the developer had to pay the price of a full game (or whatever regional equivalent) from their own pocket. At that point piracy is far more preferrable, and a number of developers have went on twitter and given press releases about this.

To stay relevant to the thread, here's a refresher on Epic's take on stolen payment methods:

It is one in all but name. Trump should slap tariffs also over it.

It's no better than a Russian scam site that forces you to report this shit as fraud and then the credit card company eats the loss.

It's somewhat frustrating that shit like MasterCard/Visa kicks off douchebags like Carl Benjamin just for being douchey but then is still providing services to scamming cunts like this. They should be as cut off from the financial network as any Russian organized crime scam.

Wait, i hadn't heard of this. Though i mostly used to watch his videos until i got burned out on the constant politics everywhere, so if it's something recent...

your full of shit, what the hell is halo wars? what about stellaris? command and conquer? xcom?
It's the one of the very short list of things he's kind of on the verge of being correct about. Largely classic strategy games don't do well on console, although there have been a few attempts at streamlining the UI and simplifying the gameplay enough to make it work (see: Civ Revolution, new X Com, et.c.). You likely won't ever see a proper 4X or MMORPG on console, the latter in part because communication is extremely important for the genre, and a hundred people screaming into mics won't work. Which is again, why this thing exists.

My secret hope is that Fortnite pushes its child gambling simulator too far and gets lootboxes regulated and fucks over their entire income stream, instakilling the Epic store, because without the exclusives, they're dead because they invested 0 money in it. And if anyone doesn't think this is a chink website, fucking lol. Poor service, terrible design, underhanded business practices, no use to the consumer, doesn't have features that existed in 2004....yeah, the Epic store is Chinese through and through.

These faggots can't even disconnect a credit card from an account? Are you fucking joking? I got my Twitch account stolen with no two-factor, they were able to verify it, give me a new password and re-set it to my prime within a day. And that's fucking Twitch. Also laugh is on Epic, they're going to be eating those charge backs. Companies get punished hard for this, which is why once they detect fraud they freeze an account so chargebacks don't hit them. Epic apparently is so inept and basic bitch it can't even do this.

can you tell your handlers to send someone more competent next go around?

Broken clock right twice a day. Nearly all strategy on console is turn based. Its next to impossible to play an RTS on a console without a mouse and keyboard.

Might be refering to the patreon kick, and subsequent subscribestar thing when Sargon moved over there, as more or less all the normie payment processors nuked Subscribestar within about 48 hours of Sargon moving there.

Oh yeah, i remember now. It's because VISA and Mastercard have some sort of weird hard-on for being against porn and they used that as some sort of convoluted excuse.

It's the exception rather than the rule, but Final Fantasy 14 is a proper MMO on a console (Playstation 4). You can also just plug a keyboard into most modern consoles instead of getting some kind of abomination like the one pictured there.

Also, comedy option.

The dumbest argument that's pro Epic that I hate is 'EGS has curation, so it's better.' There will always be bad/disappointing games on any store front. I would rather have a ton of games that could a rough gem than 40 'polished' AAA/indie games that look nice.
Isn't that the best features of the PC marketplace? That people do not have to go through some lengthy and expensive process process to put it up their games like on consoles. Yeah your gonna have to wade through a sea of shit but it'll be worth it to find that diamond in the rough.

Another dumb argument is that steam puts up games that don't work aka. they allow people to buy older games. It takes some elbow grease to make them run sometimes but at least it's an option. Though GOG is better at selling older games. Still that's not even an option with EGS.

"carefully curated" is just another way of saying the EGS library is small.

I need to finish FEZ. It's a good game, just a cunty creator. Say what you want about the creator of NMS, at least he came back around to fix his game.

Games like X-Com, Invisible Inc and Civ Rev work but that's because they're turn-based. Real-Time are always going to be superior on PC because of the greater accuracy provided by using a mouse and keyboard which is essential when needing to select specific groups of units.

I mean, so did Renaud I suppose. He released one last patch to iron out a fuckton of bugs because Fez is one glitchy fucking game. Of course Phil had nothing to do with that, but it's the sentiment that counts I guess.

So, we have some more updates on Epic. Apparently they are applying cloud saves to more games, integrating with Humble Bundle, re-working the game library feature and in the future they are promising to add a time counter how long you've played a particular game. Still no mentions of a shopping cart, also the counter thing was supposed to be implemented back in April I believe.

The developer of just-released game Darq did an AMA on Leddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/cqrtpx/ama_im_the_developer_of_darq_and_i_just_released/) where he reveals that Epic came to him with an exclusivity offer which he turned down.

Epic reached out to me right after I released the trailer announcing Steam release date. At that point DARQ was in top 50 most wishlsited games on Steam. I felt going for an exclusivity deal would show that my word means nothing (as I just had promised the game would launch on Steam). Besides, DARQ page was on Steam since November 2018 and a lot of people patiently kept it on their wishlist since them. I thought it was a bad idea to disapoint all those people and prove to the world that my annoucements mean nothing. Epic made it clear that they reached out to me with an exclusivity deal - I politely turned them down before we had a chance to discuss any details (money offered, etc.). I asked them if they would be willing to sell DARQ non-exclusively, and they explained that at this point in time it's not something they can do. It was a polite and professional exchange - I have nothing bad to say. It just wasn't the right fit for DARQ.

Goes to show just how desperate Epic is for exclusives knowing that they can't compete with Steam as a marketplace yet that they turned down his offer.

And props to the guy for not being a scumbag and taking the money unlike other devs (cough, OOBLETS, cough) out there.

Wait, what the absolute shit does this mean? "Oh hey, we really would like you to be on our store, but it has to be a predatory exclusive because you're high on the wishlist on this marketplace we're competing with". I'm very sure this kind of thing is something that EGS doesn't want public. I should contact a few people in the biz i know personally with upcoming titles and urge them to push Epic to give more details before saying no.

I agree. I don't want some entity to tell me which games are good, and which aren't. There are games that I don't like but others do and games that others hate but I like. Having both groups of games available is better than telling everyone "No, that game isn't good. We tell you which ones are good." That's the great thing about Steam - it lets people decide which games they like and ultimately buy. Let the free market decide which games will fail, which will break even, and which will succeed.

What's worse, curation is prone to nepotism and the sort of shenanigans people like Zoe Quinn exploit, which could lead to shit games still making it into curation and good games being gatekept by spiteful people who have friends inside the curation team.
